With each step bringing him closer to the Chief of Security’s office. Joseph Rainns’ anxiety grew. He was a capable, efficient, and hardworking man. He knew that. He was only worried his new department head would not be able, somehow, to tell this. Rainns had big plans for his life, and he intended to see them through. Approaching the door he paused and blinked as if to mentally prepare himself for his coming encounter. Everything in his life preceding this moment was finally coming to a culmination. Joseph Rainns had one chance to make a great first impression on his commanding officer. He intended to take it. He straightened himself up and hit the chime on the door.

Nijix’s hand held the water pot over her plant. After the liquid poured from the spout onto the dried soil of her bonsai tree, she heard the chime. She let the water dampening it before she lifted it upright. Her attention turned to the door.

“Enter.” She stated before setting the pot to the side.

While the Cadet entered, her attention briefly checked the bonsai. Her eyes examined each tiny branch housing amethyst crystals. Then she trailed down to the green moss interlocking among the rocks, giving it a solid base to rest on.

She turned to face him, leaning against her desk. Her rosy white skin had a spotted pattern. It followed from her curly copper hairline down the sides of her neckline, vanishing underneath her uniform. Bright blue eyes studied her Cadet a moment before she pushed off her desk and walked around it, taking her proper seat.

“Have a seat, please.” Her arm gestured for the chair to the side of where she had stood earlier, patiently waiting.

Of all the humanoid species in the universe, Joseph Rainns was most fascinated by the Trill. Of course, there were others that were unique and had there own points of inquiry, but to Rainns, they didn’t hold a candle to the mystery which he felt surrounded Trill. For the life of Rainns, he couldn’t understand why anyone would want to have a slug put in their body which then took influence over that person’s cognitive control and abilities. A few years prior he had even written an academic paper which compared the Trill and Borg psychology. The most bizarre part to Rainns was that he seemed alone in his slight discomfort with the concept of a Trill.

All of those thoughts and memories passed through his head as soon as he saw the spots. Rainns felt like an idiot for not checking the bio of his own commanding officer before arriving on board Challenger.

“Thank you Sir,” Rainns responded to Tavium’s request and quickly took a seat.

IC: Nijix’s eyes followed the Cadet. She noticed something in his movements causing Raji, a past life, to chuckle inside her mind. I think he might be nervous. The ex-security officer noted. From the corner of her eye, she spotted him leaning against the wall. He was still eyeing up the Cadet with a knowing smirk on his lips.

The CoS sighed softly and dismissed Raji’s comment. Her focus returned to Rainns. As she opened the first drawer for a data pad, she asked a question.

“Would you like something to drink before the questions begin?” While she waited for an answer, she pulled up the Cadet’s file on the data pad.

OOC: In case my writing wasn’t clear, Raji is a figment of Nijix’s imagination and Rainns can’t see him. It’s a method of how Nijix separates herself from past lives and it connects with her creative nature. I promise she’s not crazy.

Rainns shook his eyes, doing his best to make eye contact with his superior officer, although he found that action surprisingly difficult. “No sir,” he said, shifting in his seat. His gaze wondered for half a second to the plant before returning it to Tavium. He knew his discomfort was obvious, but he still did his best to mitigate it. Rainns couldn’t help but be surprised at his own lack of confidence that was apparent in the moment. The feeling was quite embarrassing to him.

“All right. Excuse me while I get some chamomile tea. I often find myself nervous during these report-ins. I’ll replicate a kettle,” Nijix stated as she stood up and walked to the replicator in her office. While she respected the Cadet’s decision to stick it out, his own unease spread to her. So Nijix used a trick she learned from Raji himself.

She pressed a quick code in. While the machine materialized the kettle and cups, she continued the interview.

“Let’s start with something simple. Why did you decide that both Starfleet and more specifically, security, was for you?”

-Lt. Nijix Tavium, CoS

The Chief of Security’s comment about being nervous almost made Joseph Rainns laugh out loud. He could not wrap his head around the concept of a person, who’s job it was to keep the ship she served safe and secure, being nervous during a procedural interview. He figured this was just a tactic the Lieutenant was using to make this interview less awkward. He mentally cursed himself for letting his introverted nature get the better of him in the moment. He put his hand on his lap and clenched it into a fist in frustration with himself, resolute to end the discomfort he was experiencing.

He made direct eye contact with his commanding officer and spoke in a directed and assured tone. “I joined Starfleet because I want to say the universe, and be apart of something bigger than myself. Meeting new species, exploring the cosmos and looking out for those in need. I chose security because I believe that Starfleet’s first and foremost priority should be protecting the planetary members of the United Federation of Planets. I was also taught that even if it doesn’t exist on Earth, or within the human species, evil is real, and it always will be, and I want to combat it, and protect those who can’t protect themselves from it. I can carry out that function best in this branch of Starfleet.”

Rainns relaxed slightly, now that the actual interview had started, he was right in his element, a small smile began to smile. His own words reaffirming him of his dedication to his life’s path.
