As most new missions do, a chime went off on the bridge. Incoming priority message for the captain. It was a distress beacon.

GM Wombat

Emmy had taken the rare moment of quiet before their next mission to lean back in her chair on the bridge, swiping through organizational details on a PaDD in her hand as the newest set of cadets settled onto ship-board life. There were always so many small details to coordinate and, while she could delegate that to one of the ship’s staff, she found comfort in the routine of them. As the message came through, she carefully set the PaDD beside her and leaned forward in her chair, straightening her posture.

“On screen,” she ordered.

The image quickly showed up on the screen. It was a standard repeating message that started with the picture of an Andorian male in civilian attire in a dark room, 6 other civilians huddled behind him in a small space, barely larger than a shipping container. The blue skinned man began to speak, “If you are getting this… Collapse in the main tunnel… miners lost… suspect an attack… dead four missing… rest in shelter…” After that the message cut out completely but attached was a data packet which gave the standard galactic coordinates of the P-06 mining station on Cygnus IX. A quick look up of the station would show it is one of 10 mining stations actually on a moon of Cygnus IX. The mining base has 12 members and heavy equipment to drill into the frozen surface of the planet.

Emmy listened attentively to the message, her face remaining remarkably neutral given the content.

“How far are we from Cygnus IX? Notify Starfleet and set a course there. Get all of the information you can about the moon and the mining station as well whomever runs it.”

Her string of orders complete, she sat back in her chair and waited for them to be followed.

Alpha Cygnus IX (OOC: Ignore the GM’s Typo), at was formally known, was in the Cygnus system, some times referred to as the Deneb system and in the Solaria sector. The Challenger wasn’t the closest ship, but the actual closest was the USS Shining Sea, a battle cruiser on her way towards Deep Space 7 to provide relief.

The moon was closer to an asteroid, truth be told. Small and covered in solid ice, The Hyrambi Mining Cooperative operated 10 mining stations on the surface to extract rare metals for refinement. While near inhabited planets, the electromagnetic storms in the atmosphere, and the fridged temperatures, made the rock very isolated, supply ships only able to breach the storms a few times a year.

The hearty miners of the station must have been in dire peril to send out a call asking for another ship to rescue them.

OOC: I’m going to let one of the DHs or cadets report on this back to Emmy. :)
