Rainns shook his eyes, doing his best to make eye contact with his superior officer, although he found that action surprisingly difficult. “No sir,” he said, shifting in his seat. His gaze wondered for half a second to the plant before returning it to Tavium. He knew his discomfort was obvious, but he still did his best to mitigate it. Rainns couldn’t help but be surprised at his own lack of confidence that was apparent in the moment. The feeling was quite embarrassing to him.

“All right. Excuse me while I get some chamomile tea. I often find myself nervous during these report-ins. I’ll replicate a kettle,” Nijix stated as she stood up and walked to the replicator in her office. While she respected the Cadet’s decision to stick it out, his own unease spread to her. So Nijix used a trick she learned from Raji himself.

She pressed a quick code in. While the machine materialized the kettle and cups, she continued the interview.

“Let’s start with something simple. Why did you decide that both Starfleet and more specifically, security, was for you?”

-Lt. Nijix Tavium, CoS

The Chief of Security’s comment about being nervous almost made Joseph Rainns laugh out loud. He could not wrap his head around the concept of a person, who’s job it was to keep the ship she served safe and secure, being nervous during a procedural interview. He figured this was just a tactic the Lieutenant was using to make this interview less awkward. He mentally cursed himself for letting his introverted nature get the better of him in the moment. He put his hand on his lap and clenched it into a fist in frustration with himself, resolute to end the discomfort he was experiencing.

He made direct eye contact with his commanding officer and spoke in a directed and assured tone. “I joined Starfleet because I want to say the universe, and be apart of something bigger than myself. Meeting new species, exploring the cosmos and looking out for those in need. I chose security because I believe that Starfleet’s first and foremost priority should be protecting the planetary members of the United Federation of Planets. I was also taught that even if it doesn’t exist on Earth, or within the human species, evil is real, and it always will be, and I want to combat it, and protect those who can’t protect themselves from it. I can carry out that function best in this branch of Starfleet.”

Rainns relaxed slightly, now that the actual interview had started, he was right in his element, a small smile began to smile. His own words reaffirming him of his dedication to his life’s path.

Her eyes locked with the Cadet’s during his answer. After the kettle and cups finished materializing, Nijix took her tray back to her desk. She even noticed the change in his demeanor when he spoke of his motivations and slipped into a small smile. That was something she enjoyed seeing in a Cadet.

She set her tray down. Her hand moved the tea infuser then filled it with hot liquid, the faint aroma entered her nose. All tension evaporated from her core.

“I can see and feel your dedication. It’s good because some officers enter security with no firm drive of their own. It is that drive that can help you push on when the line between right and wrong becomes blurred.”

Nijix continued with the questions while her tea brewed.

“What skills do you feel you’re best at? What do you feel that you can contribute when working with a team?”

Rainns cleared his throat before talking, he wanted to sound confident without sounding arrogant. “On a tangible level I offer my hard work ethic and determination to carry out the orders of my superior officers,” he began, “the intangibles I possess include strong and decisive decision making, a highly analytical mind and a strong moral center, I know what’s wrong and what’s right.”

Nijix quietly examined his words, then broke the silence.

“Right and wrong are not always clear. Mainly because new races can push this to their limits and some times don’t align with ours. How do you handle a situation where all crimes are suffered by one punishment? Especially when one of your fellow officers breaks one?”

-Lt. Nijix Tavium, CoS

“I disagree, there is an objective right and objective wrong.” Rainns countered. “Just because certain cultures have different values does not make those values equal to our own. The situation you describe is when it is most imperative to remember that not all ethics and morality are equal. If that sort of scenario where to happen, I would not let a fellow officer fall victim to an inferior justice system.”

Nijix drank her tea, avoiding an answer. She paused long enough to set the cup aside and write something in the data pad. Already, several thoughts were running through her mind, but she would address them later on with a clearer head. From the corner of her eyes, Raj just smirked and looked amused by the interview. This made her mentally roll her eyes at him. As Nijix finished up, she moved onto the next question.

“What skills do you feel you still need to improve on?”

-Lt. Nijix Tavium, CoS
