Cadet Rainns made his way down the corridor towards the Counselor’s office. Unlike his other two check ins, he was not in the slightest nervous about this particular appointment. Joseph Rainns considered himself to be a picture of mental fitness. He had no traumatic experiences as a child or in his early and budding adulthood. His family were all still alive and well, and the most stress he had ever been under was academically based as he had always aimed for perfection, and despite some exceptions, had mostly achieved that goal. He felt he was well on his way to the Captain’s chair, although he knew it would be awhile until he got there.
Rains approached the door to the Counselor’s office, made sure his uniform looked appropriate, and stepped in.

Unlike most doors on the Challenger, this door did not simply slide open. However, as he stepped forward, a small chime could be heard from inside. A few moments later, the door slid open and a Vulcan female Cadet from the Engineering department stood in front of Rainns. A curt nod and a stoic “Cadet. Excuse me.” were the precursors to the Vulcan stepping to the side and making her way down the corridor.

The office before Rainns was lit in a more subdued manner than the rest of the ship; with the light coming from wall lamps rather than the typical overhead lighting and giving a less harsh and much warmer glow. Multiple bookcases with glass enclosed shelves lined one wall, filled with copies and originals of many texts on many different subjects, and a quick glance would show multiple languages as well. The desk was set at an angle against the opposite wall to the door in the corner, allowing for a large open space in the middle. Here there was a couch and a few chairs, one of which sat in front of and facing away from the desk. Pictures hung on the walls, some were even old photographs. Each depicted either places, individuals, or groups of people, and many were in black and white.

Seated at the desk was a plain looking human male with brown hair and brown eyes. He was average looking; the kind of person that would be lost in a crowd of more than four or five people. He wore the blue uniform of the Science and Medical Sections, and Lieutenant Commander pips gleamed brightly on his collar. There was one distinguishing feature about the man, however. Actual glasses were perched on his nose. He looked up, and the a very odd accent issued forth, as if multiple accents were vying for control. “Hello, Cadet. What can I do for you?”

Lt. Cmdr. Korczak, CNS

Slightly caught off guard by the peculiar setup of the office, Rainns’ eyes darted about the room for a few moments before settling on the counselor and he stood at attention. “Reporting to your office as ordered for my boarding check in sir.”

Cadet Rainns, Security

The plain man looked at him momentarily and then said in his odd accent “Well, I didn’t order you here, Cadet. But you are most welcome to come in and have a seat.” Rising he made his way to the replicator in the wall. “Care for something to drink?” he asked informally.

“No sir,” Rainns responded quickly, truth be told, if he didn’t have to talk to a counselor he didn’t exactly want to stay and chat, he would much prefer to leave. Unfortunately, Rainns knew that was not an action he could take and simply took a seat in front of the counselor.

“Very well.” and unlike the Counselors at the Academy, this one simply closed out the interface in his desk and then stood and moved to the sitting area without any kind of PaDD or recording device. “How was your trip to the Challenger, Cadet? No issues, I hope?” he asked in a conversational manner.

Korczak, CNS

Momentarily taken by surprise by the Counselor’s actions and apparent attitude, Rainns slightly pivoted his sitting position to face the Korczak but remained seated. He hated unexpected events, even something as slight as a man changing his sitting location. “It was uneventful sir,” Rainns stated, “Nothing problematic occurred.”

“And are you settling well? Any issues with your quarters? Your roommate? And have you checked in with the Security Chief yet?” he asked in the way of two coworkers having lunch. Aside from the odd accent of his voice, and the fact that they were flying through space at Warp 5, this could have been any conversation in any of a thousand office buildings.

“My transfer to this ship has been extremely smooth,” Rainns responded, “no problems, I’m going to check in with the Chief as soon as I leave this office.” Rainns appreciated the casualness of the counselor, as it put him more at ease.

“Good. I will try and keep this as… efficient… as possible, so as not to slow down the process of you coming aboard.” and he shifted just slightly in his seat. “Tell me a bit about yourself, Cadet. I reviewed your file, but as I am sure you are aware, personnel files rarely if ever convey the full picture of an individual.”

Rainns looked up at the roof of the room and thought about his response. “I am a hardworking man who wants to do something meaningful with his life sir.” He paused again for a moment. “I feel that joining starfleet is the best way to achieve that goal. I don’t want to be an interstellar spec when my life comes to an end.”

Cadet Joseph Rainns- Security

Korczak nodded slightly and said “Why do you feel Star Fleet is the best path towards that goal?”

Korczak, CNS

“I feel Starfleet is the best because it will present me with opportunities to travel and explore and impact other people and cultures better than any other institution.” Rainns responded firmly.

Cadet Joseph Rainns- Security

“And in what form and fashion do you see that ‘impact’ being made, Cadet?”

Korczak, CNS
