Taking a seat opposite, Korczak said “Thank you. Most belonged to my parents. They allowed me a few selections prior to my leaving home. And is your father a bibliophile, Cadet? And are you?”

Korczak, CNS

“I am, somewhat, Commander.” The grin slid off his face. “My father most definitely is. He’s a professor back at Mount Royal University, on Earth. I love the man, but if the choice were between books and people, well, his library would match the size of Alexandria, rather than his student and peerage fan base matching the same.”
His head shook slightly, almost in disbelief as he realized he was already sharing way too much, about something he’d long come to terms with. “In any case, I’ve always found it a true pleasure to hold an actual book in my hands, to feel the coarseness of the paper, to smell the decaying ink, rather than to just read it with the behind glow of a PADD.”

Cadet Devon Collins, Security

“I agree wholeheartedly, Cadet. Paper seems to carry the words in a more… meaningful… fashion.” and he paused for a brief moment. “I know of the university you spoke of. What does your father teach?”

Korczak, CNS

Devon felt he did a sufficient job of smothering the sigh he felt bubbling up. “He’s in the spatial engineering department there. It’s a great school, love the campus myself, I actually completed a degree there before applying for Star Fleet. ” That was pretty neutral right? It’s not that Devon didnt love his father, he did very much, both his parents actually, it was just that he was so tired of living in their shadows.

But really, what were the odds that Korzcak would recognize his father, and even then make the connection between the last names? Of course, Lawrence Collins was doing some groundbreaking work, and Debora Collins had discovered the “Spencer Gene”, but there were billions of humans throughout the galaxy. At least, that’s what Devon kept telling himself…

Korczak paused for a moment and then simply said “Hm. And what did you study, Cadet? And was it a labor of love… or of practicality? Something to help you in your current endeavor, or perhaps something more… personally meaningful?” If there was any kind of recognition of the Cadet’s parents, there was no sign.

Korczak, CNS

Devon rubbed his chin with his forefinger, and slowly spoke, “Well, my major was in education sir, if you can believe that. And yes, it was a labor of love. At the time I started, I hadn’t made a decision about joining Starfleet. The truth of it was though, it was the major push I needed to make that decision. After just a few months, in studying the power of words, I knew that I had the potential of using words to bring peace, to help others. That’s why I wanted to be in security Sir. This is the position that has the greatest opportunities for being diplomatic, with the alternative of using force. Not that I am worried about that as well, but frankly, I always prefer a peaceful solution. Right up to the point where that is no longer an option.”

It felt strange to voice a lot of these thoughts that had been very private, simmering under the surface, but in reality, it felt good. Devon felt good sharing these thoughts with a complete stranger, when he never could with those close to him.

OOC> I am still working through my other 2 “intro” threads, but am wondering when we are able to join in with some of the main and off-main sims?

Cadet Devon Collins, Security

OOC: You can join in at any time. I would even encourage that. It will give you chance to practice maintaining multiple threads.

IC: “Eductaion. And interesting beginning to a Security career. Why would you not look at the Diplomatic Corps? Or even a career in politics? The Federation always has need of those skilled in the art of word-play.”

Korczak, CNS

“It made the most sense for me, because I feel the real diplomats are those on the starships, those making first contact, travelling to these far flung planets. I chose security because I felt it was the most likely avenue for me to progress and get to a rank where I can actually make a difference, rather than just a supporting role. I also enjoy the potential for protection and standing up for the innocent, I suppose. It’s a fairly complicated thought process, but it has gotten me here, and I am happy with my choices.”
It really had been quite a lengthy thought process, much meditation and study. His father still couldn’t understand it, but his mother, now, she had initially been skeptical, but had eventually seen that her son truly was chasing his heart.
It didn’t matter so much now, he was stepping forward on a new track, and was excited and eager to march forward, so to speak.
