When the roundabout touched down and the crew disembarked they were struck with how cold and ultimately desolate the place was. Few land markers indicated they were even at the station, but there were three bunker doors, one to the north which was likely the shaft head. One to the west that was likely the “panic room” and then one attached to a slightly raised ring which was likely the hab.

<snip>

On top of the shaft building sat a large communication array and other sensors and antennas.

Keval stepped back into the runabout, bringing up the communication system on the terminal. =^= Away team to Challenger. We have landed safely. Come in, Challenger. =^=

The signal got through to the challenger easy enough. It was weak, not great, but it got through. Visual would be rough though, taking up a good amount of bandwidth.

From the antenna on the tower, there was a thick cable bundle that ran from the top along the outside and into the lower level of the building. Energy readings there were outputting a little more than standby. In fact the whole site, except for the emergency shelter, seemed to be on standby.

As Nijix stepped out, her eyes quickly glanced around. Observing and absorbing the feel, image and sense of the place. It was one cold and lonely rock from her first impression. She hadn’t realized the group had moved on until they weren’t standing near the shuttle. Immediately she moved to catch up.

On arrival, she caught bits of the conversation.

“I agree with establishing communications with the Challenger. However, we can’t forget the miners. Their time is limited and longer we wait preparing, the less time they have.”

She glanced around again through scenery, “First we need to figure out where the miners are and how to help.”

=/\= Challenger here. We have audio and a very weak visual. Let’s keep it to audio only for now to try to make sure it’s as clear as possible. =/\=

IC:
Cadet Schweitzer exited the runabout and unloaded his gear. He looked around to get his bearings and then moved toward Lt. Tija. He felt protective of her in an odd way, even though she was both older and his superior. He could sense that she was troubled just as Schweitzer knew that he himself was troubled. He hoped he could help make things easier for her and for the rest.of the medical team. Schweitzer was worried because he had no idea what they were up against on this planet. It could be anything from scrapes and bruises to a full blown mass casualty event to a raging pandemic. He had to be ready. This was an opportunity to put his training into action. He took a deep breath and tried to settle himself for what lay ahead.

Tija gave both her cadets a small smile and then turned her attention towards Nijix. “Yes, that should be our top priority,” she replied “My suggestion is that a few members of the away team stay behind to make sure the com-link to the Challenger stays open. Then I would like a few people to accompany us medical officers on our search for the miners; security and engineering in particular. And it wouldn’t be a bad idea for third team to do some investigations around here to get a better idea of what actually happened,” she suggested, though it probably sounded a bit more like an order than a suggestion. While she wasn’t by any means the highest ranking officer on the away team, she hoped that her fellow senior officers didn’t mind. After all, as Nijix had pointed out: this was a time sensitive mission and they should start to get going.

(OOC: So as the Chief Engineer, my character probably has skills and knowledge that not every crew member of the Challenger has. In this case, if you recall, before leaving the bridge my character downloaded as much as he could about the specs of the mining facility. Therefore, the GM in private has confirmed with me certain things my character probably now knows.)

(OOC 2: You’ll also notice I’ve trimmed this post a bit. See my earlier OOC post about trimming posts for how/why I did this.)

Keval stepped back out of the runabout. “We have audio communication with Challenger for now, but it’s not strong. At some point we’ll want to ensure we set up a relay if we’re going to need help down here.”

The Andorian then took another look around, before pointing to the west. “I recognize that bunker from the facility’s layout. That’s the facility’s safety area, where the miners are supposed to go in case of emergency. There’s a good chance we can find people there who need any help and can tell us what’s going on. Next to it is the facility’s habitat area.”

Keval turned back to the north, pointing at the building with the large communication array. “That’s the shaft entrance to the mine. We’ll have to manually check it out to see what the power situation is and what damage there is to the structural integrity of the shaft entrance.”

Keval turned back to Tavium. “I think we’re going to need to split up, Nijix. Some of us need to find the miners at the safety area, make sure everyone’s okay, and find out what has happened here. The rest of us could head to the mine entrance - we can try to secure the communication and sensors there, and see about accessing the mine itself,” Keval suggested. He looked around the desolate area again. “Normally I would suggest we keep someone here to secure the runabout - unless we know we can ensure that comm array is fully operation, this might be our only link back to Challenger. But it’s not like this is a busy area, and the runabout’s security shields are good…”

-Lt. Keval Vras, CE

Science, if they were bothering to look, would see that there were no life forms for at at least 10 klicks. It was a cold hunk of space ice and rock. No one was going to play Grand Theft Runabout, much to Vras’ chagrin.

For the other teams, it wouldn’t be a hard trek to the mines or the bunker.

“I Still think we should set up communications now to be safe rather than sorry, who’s comin’ with?” Douglas said while looking like his mind was somewhere else

(Cadet. Douglas. Science)

Nijix briefly noted the Cadet’s comment, but didn’t comment. The Cadet’s mind was distracted and addressing it now wasn’t helpful. She nodded at her fellow senior officers. “I agree with you both, it will cover more ground. While I feel it might be best for some security to be with each group, I don’t think we will have enough man power. Especially if we need to dig people out.”

She took a breath before continuing. “So right now the plan is simple. We have one group aiming to focus on communications for the Challenger. One to locate and help the miners. Another to find information over what happened.”

Her body turned to the CE’s suggestion, “The miner group should start at the bunker, like Vras suggested. It is the best place to start. Sadly, we will need all the eyes and hands we brought to help. More knowledge is needed right now before we spread out too thinly.”

Nijix then addressed her cadets, “Cadets Collins, Christianson, and Rainns, you’re with me. We’re heading to the bunkers first then if we don’t find anyone, we head to the mines. I’m assuming you and your cadet will join us, Lieutenant Aizala?”

“Tija,” the CMO said softly. Not that it was a big and yet just like the rest of the crew she’d like to be addressed with her last name, if her name was mentioned at all. At least when addressed in a work capacity.

She waited for confirmation before she led her group to the bunkers. Even after the suggestion being Aizala’s, Nijix wanted to make sure nothing changed. Especially after Vras’ intel.

-Lt. Nijix Tavium, CoS

OOC: While you guys play out the assignments, could we please get each team starting their threads quickly here? I’d like to see us getting into the meat of the main sim. :)

~ Sarah

Tija gave the CoS a curt nod and then said, “Yes, Cadets Mika and Schweitzer and I will join you. Depending on the situation in the bunker we might then want to split up. My suggestion is that Cadets Schweitzer and Collins will stay with me and the others stay with you.” Looking at the security and medical cadets, she continued, “We better get going.” Without another word the CMO started to make her way towards the bunker, the bag with her med kit still slung over her shoulder.

Cadet Schweitzer followed Lt. Tija to the bunker while observing his surroundings. He did not see any sick or wounded outside, which meant either that whatever had necessitated the distress call was either inside the mine or that any casualties outside had been moved indoors. He used his tricorder to scan for any environmental contamination and found none, which was a good initial indicator. However, as he was taught in medical school, the absence of evidence of a problem was not evidence of the absence of a problem, as the underlying cause could simply be undetermined. He spoke up to report his findings. “No evidence of environmental contamination on initial scans, Lieutenant.”
