It wasn’t long after they had left the runabouts landing side, the team arrived at the bunker. Not even thinking about whether or not it might be dangerous to just try and get into the bunker, Tija quickened her steps and walked straight towards the door. Without missing a beat she attempted to open the door, hoping it wasn’t locked so that they could easily get inside and assess the situation.

OOC: As you can see I’m leaving it open for the GM to tell me whether or not we can get inside. It is a rather small thing, but as a player I don’t know for certain that we’ll be able to just enter. So just as with the results of scans I’ll let the GM tell us.

Having grabbed a type 3 phaser rifle, Cadet Rainns had set out with his team toward the bunker, upon arrival he scoffed at the Doctor as she tried to open the door to the installation. “Dr. Aizala, I hardly think you should be the one to breach that hatch,” he cautioned, “with all due respect security personal should be in front here, we don’t know whats behind that door.”

Cadet Joseph Rainns- Security

Cadet Mika, having followed the group, stood back. She also hadn’t thought about the danger of just opening the door, only wondering what it was they’d see inside. And then, when Cadet Rainns voiced his opinion over who should be in front, Mika suddenly realized that it was probably a good idea. However, she’d never have the guts to say something like Rainns had to a superior officer. But she didn’t say anything, she was too focused on watching Tija, to see if the door would open.

~ Cadet Tandra Mika, Doctor

The door was locked, but like most Star Fleet doors it didn’t have a handle. Instead it was something akin to a set of blast doors closed together with a manual release in the alcove. Above the manual release was a small box that was a pin pad of sorts and an intercom.

Without looking at the Cadet, Tija said, “It’s Doctor Tija. Aizala is - what humans call - my first name and I would appreciate it, if I was addressed properly. And the door isn’t opening anyway.” Her voice was sharp and those on the team who had made the same mistake at some point, would most likely notice, that her reaction to it was much stronger than it normally was. A sign that what happened in the shuttle bay had left a deeper mark behind then she was currently trying to let on?

After a few moments of chatter the small screen popped open and an Adorian male’s picture set on the screen silently judging the group clustered outside. “Who are you?” he demanded in a crackled voice. The intercom, like most of the equipment, had seen better days it appeared.

“I’m Lieutenant Tija. I’m the Chief Medical Officer of the USS Challenger. We received your distress call and came here to help you,” she replied, deciding to leave the rest of the introduction for later, and then asked, “Do you have any wounded? Can you let us in?” Her voice had lost it’s sharpness from a moment ago, yet still was more matter-of-factly than anything.

OOC: Copy-pasting John’s reply in to fix the split thread.

IC:
As the CMO addressed the Andorian, Schweitzer took a defensive position against the wall, flush with the door. He made eye contact with Lt. Tija and patted the wall beside him to suggest she do the same. Something seemed very off here. The only reason that occurred to Schweitzer why a colony would be hesitant to admit Starfleet officers after issuing a distress call was that the Andorian feared that they were not in fact Starfleet officers there to assist them. The Andorian’s response suggested to Schweitzer that he feared that they might be under attack. As confident as he was in Cadet Rainns’ skills with a phaser rifle, getting shot was not part of a successful first away mission. He wanted to keep himself and his superior out of the way of whoever or whatever answered that door. He pressed his back into the wall and held his breath.

Cadet Albert Schweitzer (Medical)

Nijix had just caught the last of the brief exchange between Rainns and Tija. The joined-trill frowned, but let the CMO address the situation. She had a rank up on the young cadet, and she made a note about. Now wasn’t the time to address a minor issue.

The emptiness of the camp set an eerie tone and continued to poke her discomfort. She hid it the best she could as she watched Tija address the bunker. When someone peeked out and got gruff, her head tilted back in surprise. She didn’t expect miners to be in the bunker.

Quietly she stepped in behind the CMO.

“I’m going to leave a cadet here and let you and your team handle this. Too many people around might make them more skittish and that won’t help anyone. I’m heading to the mine with the rest. We’ll see if we can find any trapped miners.”

Tija simply gave her a small nod, her eyes still resting on the screen in front of her.

Not wasting time, she moved from the CMO and toward the mines. She gestured for Rainns and a few others to follow her. They had some mining to do and time was critical.

Mel had been quiet for most of the trip, and now was no different. She wasn’t startled when she was left with the CMO’s team. Though she wasn’t sure how much help she’d be with wounded (she knew what a medical tricorder looked like and that was about the extent of her skills there), she’d be another set of hands, and, given the state of the facility’s equipment, having a spare engineer on hand probably wasn’t a bad idea.

-Cdt. Mel Booker, Engineer

There was a long silence from the male then the screen blinked off. A few moments later the blast doors opened revealing an airlock of sorts with a large wheeled door on the other side. Once the team moved in, the wheel started to turn and the sound of bolts withdrawing before a grunt pulled the massive safe door open.

“Took you long enough,” he grumbled before nodding at Tija. “I am the assistant director here. Ressis,” he glanced around and beckoned them to come inside. “Lobac is whinging so you might as well look at him.”

“We came as fast as we could, Sir,” Tija replied with a mix of kindness and authority. Looking at the two cadets with her she added, “Cadet Schweitzer, go to Lobac and see what is wrong with him.” She trusted that he could handle it by himself, but would ask for help when needed. Gesturing for Booker to stay with her, she stayed close to Ressis and asked, “What happened? Is anybody else injured?”

~Lt. Tija, CMO

Reiss grimaced at Tija’s understandable, but painful question. “We’re fine, but we don’t know the status of anyone. Borefar went with several other miners to check on the status of the others, but…” His voice trailed off and he quickly shifted gears. “We were mining in the tunnels when there was a sudden explosion that rattled the complex. All of the systems, communication and otherwise, are down now.” He looked dubiously at the CMO to see her reaction to the information that he had shared so far.

~ GM

Tija listened closely and carefully to every word Ressis said, while also taking in his body language and the tone of his voice. At the mention of the explosion, part of her mind went straight into triage mode. With explosions came certain types of injuries. Then, of course, there were the type of injuries related to trauma due to blunt force, such as being hit by rocks when a mine caved in. However, apart form a small frown, sign of concentration in this case, she didn’t show much of an outward reaction at all. There were a couple of questions she had. Yet she also thought she should let the other team, the one heading into the mine in particular, know what they had just been told. After a brief moment of deliberation, she decided to ask her questions - or at least one of them - first. Looking Ressis straight into the eyes, she asked, “But what, Sir?”
