Returning to the here and now, Tija blinked a couple of times before eventually saying, “I don’t think I’m the right person to answer that question. I suggest asking one of the other cadets. Also, there is no need to apologize, Cadet. The scar on my face comes with a long story I haven’t really talked about in a long time. And you are right, there are many wounds my tricorder will never detect.” Her voice falter slightly at the end and she took a deep breath, internally chastising herself for it. She didn’t want to show those internal wounds, yet deep down she also knew that if she opened up more, other people - the cadets in particular - might find it easier to open up as well and find a way to live in a healthy way with any possible trauma in their pasts. But was she ready for sharing even part of her story outside of the safety of the Counsellor’s office?

“My” he pauses for a moment to find the right word, “Mentor… used to have a saying, while it’s not intended to imply anything in specific. I’ve taken solace in its meaning many times.” Placing his hands on his knee, he leaned forward to speak a with the intention of privacy “Failure is not the same thing as Defeat. Plant your failures in your being and bathe them in pride. For you have discovered Wisdom.” The thought of repeating those words to another in the manner he had first heard them felt nostalgic in a sense, sitting back up he hesitated. “…Then he hit me over my shoulder with his walking stick to hammer the point. I’m fresh out of walking sticks, so you’ll have to settle with my charming personality Lieutenant Tija.”

Tja chuckles softly at his final remark, but then she fell silent again as she contemplated his words. They made sense, sure, but she wasn’t certain how they applied to her situation, her past. It was something to meditate on later. “Thank you, Cadet,” she replied sincerely. “I will keep that in mind.” Putting her tricorder away, she continued, “Is there anything else you’d like to talk about? Or do you have any other questions?”

“No, I don’t think so. I haven’t even had a chance to unpack yet.” K’sang began collecting his belongings, “As long as the Science lab doesn’t explode, I should be fine.”

Smiling crookedly, Tija said dryly, “I sure hope it won’t. Emergency medicine may be my field of expertise, but I’m always glad when I have make use of that training as little as possible.” Stepping slightly aside, so that Duras could get off the biobed easily, she continued, Have a good day, Cadet, and again: Welcome aboard!”
