“Cadet Booker? Fantastic, right on time,” the Andorian said without looking around. He waved to the table behind him, next to Booker. “Hand me a dilithium frequency modulator, it’s the grey one.”

There were a number of engineering tools and equipment items on the table indicated, and they were all standard grey…

(OOC: Sorry, I couldn’t resist with this character - feel free to play up how your character would handle it, and you can invent the kind of details your character may or may not remember from Academy courses.)

-Lt. Keval Vras, CE

Grey was definitely not the best indicator of which device to pick, but Mel’s brain immediately started running through the details of the various tools she’d used more regularly in the Academy courses . She wasn’t sure she’d used a dilithium frequency modulator before, but a couple of the items on the table were definitely not that leaving two to choose between.

“Uh - blue button or green?”

-Cdt. Mel Booker, Engineer

“Blue,” Keval said, turning around. “You know, that’s one area the Academy doesn’t focus as much on anymore. Ever since warp core recrystalization became the norm, our attention in starship engineering focused on other areas. But if we ever had a breakdown of the the theta-matrix compositor, well…”

Keval put down the piece of equipment he was working on, focusing on Booker. “I’m Lieutenant Keval Vras, chief engineer. And you are Cadet Booker, and… new. Tell me, is this you’re first time working on a starship?”

-Lt. Keval Vras, CE

“Yes sir,” She responded, offering him the device he’d requested moments earlier. “Prior experience has really only been the sims they run us through at the Academy.”

That was, after all, what she was meant to achieve here: gaining experience on a functioning ship. It was exciting, in the same way it had been exciting to get to her first Engineering course.

-Cdt. Mel Booker, Engineer

(OOC: You’ll see I snipped out the some of the earlier quoted posts to trim back the length of this post.)

“Hmm…,” Keval said, putting down his tool, and walking towards the warp reactor with the device in his hand. “Come with me.”

“What led you to Engineering,” the Andorian asked. “Anything in particular that drew you to the inner workings of a starship?”

As Keval waited for the answer, he stopped at a terminal right in front of the warp core and started tapping on some of the keys with his left hand, his other hand still holding the now-repaired device.

(OOC: So, should I snip the top post in all future responses or do we wait for it to get to about a certain length before snipping again?)

“Grew up on a ship myself, though as I said, never worked on one before. My parents both served, and so Starfleet was always where I sort of saw myself going,” She admitted as she followed him. “And I always had a thing for working on mechanics. Liked the feeling of getting things working again. I had a knack for workin’ on things with my hands, ever since I was a kid. Engineering felt like the natural sort of progression.”

Mel looked at the console briefly, trying to see if she could figure out what he was doing.

(OOC: You should snip once there are more than approximately three replied posts or so. You can probably do so now :) Oh, remember to sign off..)

Just as Booker started looking at the console, one of the dilithium chambers opened up in the warp core. “That’s good to hear. Now is a good time to get started as any,” the Andorian said, handing the device he was holding over to the cadet.

“Add this synthisizer to that chamber while I monitor the frequency output. You should see the spot at the front right of the chamber.”

-Lt. Keval Vras, CE
