Winston’s anxiety began to subside as he exited the turbolift. He had managed to not make a fool of himself in front of his department head, at least he thought. Walking down the corridor, the halls of the ship seemed to overwhelm him less, instead inspiring awe, a feeling of grand adventure and discovery. And to think this was only a training vessel for cadets.... It excited him to no end. Standing at the door of the Counselor’s office, he pulled his uniform taut and straightened himself out. For the first time that he was here, his hands weren’t shaky. He confidently tapped on the panel next to the door.
“This is Cadet Greiss. I’m here for my evaluation.”

The doors slid open silently. The office on the other side of the door was unlike any area in the rest of the ship. It was lit in a more subdued manner than the rest of the ship, with the light coming from wall lamps rather than the typical overhead lighting. Multiple bookcases with glass enclosed shelves lined one wall, filled with copies and originals of many texts on many different subjects, and a quick glance would show multiple languages as well. The desk was set at an angle against the opposite wall to the door in the corner, allowing for a large open space in the middle. Here there was a couch and a few chairs, one of which sat in front of and facing away from the desk. Pictures hung on the walls, some were even old photographs. Each depicted either places, individuals, or groups of people, and many were in black and white.

The Counselor was wholly plain looking; in fact so nondescript that he almost blended in with the office. His voice, on the other hand, was distinctive. “Hello. I am Lieutenant Commander Korczak. Please come in, Cadet.” The man had a most unusual accent, as if two wholly unrelated accents were vying for control. Even with that, his speech was clear and articulate; with crisp pronunciation and diction. The only other noticeable fact of the man were the glasses perched on his nose… actual glasses.

Korczak, CNS

“Hello there sir. I don’t mean to be blunt, but may I ask where you are from? Your accent is quite.... distinct.” Greiss nervously said, trying to sound as respectful as he could.

Korczak smiled and motioned for him to take a seat and came around his desk. “I am from Poland, but spent a good portion of my formative years in England studying at Oxford… hence my accent.” and he chuckled. “Would you care for some tea? I was just about to make some for myself.”

Greiss sat on the chair and gazed about the office. “That won’t be necessary unless the replicator on this allows dangerously high amounts of sugar and honey.” Winston’s gaze was quite particularly set on the bookshelves. “It’s quite a rarity to see someone other than a captain have this many books in their office. “I can assume you’ve heard of the lawyer who served on Starbase 11 in the 2260’s? A relative of yours?” he said jokingly.

Korczak smiled and said “I had heard, yes. And no, no relation.” and he came and took a seat facing the Cadet. Looking at the bookcases, he said “Most are gifts from my parents and family. We have always been voracious readers. My father’s library at home has almost a thousand originals. A few even first editions. These are mostly reproductions of works he still holds onto.” and then he turned his attention to the Cadet before him. “How was your trip to the ship? Uneventful, I hope?” and he raised his cup and took a drink. Another notable oddity of the Counselor… he had no PaDD, no recording or note device of any kind.

Winston shuffled in his seat a little. “It was fine, but I’m a little sad that I won’t be seeing the academy campus for a while.” He fiddled with his thumbs. “To be frank, I went to sickbay first and was nearly late to my check in with the chief engineer.” He paused. He felt strangely comfortable here, with these warm lights and homely interior. It should be jarring to see this on a starship outside of a holodeck, but it wasn’t at all.
