Cadet Schweitzer replied, “I specialize in alien disease process and specifically on pathogens that can spread from one species to another. I lack experience in working with colleagues as most of my research in medical school and during my residency was independent. I look forward to being a part of your team.” Schweitzer took a deep breath and steadied his gaze at the Lieutenant. He hoped that was a satisfactory answer because it was the truth. He was a solitary person by nature and had little experience working and living with others.

Cadet Albert Schweitzer - Medical

Tija nodded here and there while she listened intently. Leaning slightly forwards, with her crossed arms resting on the desk, she said, “It is always a good start to acknowledge one’s shortcomings. And trust me, serving on any Starfleet vessel means that you will get ample training in working in a team. And even those of us who initially struggle with that, do get better at it over time.” She gave Schweitzer a hint of a knowing smile as if to say, ‘I’ve been there myself.’

Cadet Schweitzer smiled back and exhaled gratefully. It was nice to have a boss that understood him, at least a little. Schweitzer asked, “What kinds of projects do you see me working on?”

Cadet Albert Schweitzer (Medical)

With her head tilted ever so slightly to the right, Tija thought about that question for a short moment before she answered. “First and foremost I expect you and everyone else in my department to actively participate in whatever mission we’ll be assigned to next. Secondly, I’m in the process of starting a symposium. Mainly for the medical and science department, but it will be open for everyone on board. My expectations for you and the other Cadets is that you participate in those symposiums and that you each give at least one presentation and lead the accompanying discussion. The presentation should be on something you are already familiar with. Preferably something that spiked your interest and you would like deeper insight into through discussion with peers. Otherwise regular duties in sickbay with a focus on strengthening your strengths and weakening your weaknesses. In your case - from our conversation thus far - I would say that that means treating people with infectious diseases and keeping at least part of your focus in that area, but also regularly working in a team so that you start to feel more comfortable with that kind of work. Does that sound reasonable?”

Schweitzer nodded. “It certainly does. I’ll start preparing a presentation right away. Is there anything else you want me to focus on in the immediate future?”

OOC: Don’t forget to sign off ;)

“Nothing right now,” replied Tija with a shake of her head. “Do you have any other questions or anything else you’d like to discuss? If not I suggest going to sickbay for your medical evaluation, so that I can clear you for duty,” she suggested. Though she tried to make it clear with her body language that it was perfectly fine to stay in her officer, if there were other things he’d like to talk about first.
