“Thank you”, Aili hummed through pursed lips as she accepted her glass from the holographic bartender. She pressed it between her palms, delicately rolling them back and forth. “What time is it?”, she asked, glancing up at the hologram. “Half five. Same as last time you asked, more or less”, he responded in a broad Australian accent. Having invited a plethora of unfamiliar names- the ship’s entire compliment of cadets no less- to socialise, Aili had chosen the pub setting in the hopes of feeling slightly less exposed, especially in the event of a poor turnout. People, even if holographic, milled around ordering drinks and coming and going through the doors to the imagined street beyond. Dim lighting, emanating from antique lanterns mounted on the stone walls and wide pillars, cast thick shadows, ready to be melted into in a mere few steps should a particularly akward exchange encourage rapid retreat. Beginning to raise her glass to her lips, she quickly changed her mind, sharply turning to look over her shoulder to where the doors to the holodeck were shrouded behind the photonic back wall of the room. The time she had invited everyone for was still ten minutes away but as was typical of the cadet, she was already becoming anxious that no one would appear. Cursing her needless anxiety, she took a deep breath, followed by a small sip of her warmed drink.

It seemed Aili’s anxiety was to prove unfounded, at least in part, for the first of her guests had arrived. Said guest was a Caitian, six foot tall and black-furred, in the off-duty attire of trousers, boots, and a Starfleet Academy extracurricular club shirt, specifically the Martial Arts club. A bajoran earring dangled from his right ear, jingling slightly as he looked around for the host of this gathering, unsure where to begin. Oh, he’d been in holodecks before, but always in simulations, never for recreation or socializing.

(Cadet Satyol, Science)

Cadet Mika headed into the holodeck, pausing briefly at the door. Just yesterday, she’d been here - alone - with Aili. But she had come today to meet the other Cadets, which had been the original plan yesterday.

Mika was short, just 5‘4’‘, and had a slim figure, but she was toned and fit, as a practicer of martial arts herself - Judo. Her off-duty choice in clothes was a pair of athletic shorts, a blank t-shirt and some tennis-shoes.

As she headed further into the holodeck, she gave a friendly wave to Aili, and then headed towards Cadet Satyol, someone she had only briefly met, in a professional capacity. “Hey there!”

Having become wrapped up in conversation with the bartender, Aili’s attention to the entrance had waned. Satyol had made his entrance during an especially gripping discussion of chocolate and as such, Aili failed to notice. The occasional glance over her shoulder didn’t serve her well once the holodeck doors has again vanished, as she did not recognise the other cadet. That was until Mika appeared. The next over the shoulder glance Aili made was cut short as she had learned to expect not to see anything new behind her. Again cutting short her head movement as she caught Cadet Mika in the corner of her eye, she gave the appearance of a dog shaking off water as her red hair span around her and landed in her face. Aili waved back at Mika with an unforced grin, which sank slightly as she saw the other girl approach Satyol. She turned back to face the wall of bottles behind the bar, the embarrassment of not knowing how long she had left the first arrival standing alone prompting her to down the last of her drink. She really wished it wasn’t syntheholic in that moment. “Another”, she yelled at the hologram, interrupting his conversation with some fictional patrons. Smiling, he didn’t break eye contact as he went through the motions of preparing her drink. Who programmed this guy, she was forced to wonder.

As Joseph Rainns made his way down the corridor he grumbled to himself just loud enough to be audible. “Time to be social” he muttered to himself as his pace quickened. Rainns was still in full uniform, as he liked the formality of the clothing and had just gotten off shift. Whatever the opposite of a party animal was, Cadet Rainns was that. He much preferred an intimate setting with a few friends and some wine. When he saw the invite list, he had noticed that damn near most of the crew had been invited. Rainns didn’t have a problem with people, but informal get togethers with large amounts of people socially drained him. But alas, he could not just stay home and read a book as he had in his childhood, the cadet knew he needed to make friends and make connections. To make the situation more uncomfortable, the last time he was on a holodeck for recreation was with his ex girlfriend, whom he had just recently broken up with. The holodeck just served as a nagging reminder of his loneliness, as he had grown to associate the two together. As he approached the door, he took a deep breath, he’d drop by for a few minutes, have a few drinks, and make an escape back to his quarters once he felt he had hit his social quota for the month.

Stepping into the Holodeck, Rainns surveyed the scene. He saw several cadets whom he vaguely recognized and a Caitian, who he assumed was not a hologram, but could not be sure, as he had never seen him outside of the program. Regardless, he quickly spotted the bar and made his way over to it. Approaching the bartender he ordered a drink and sat down at the bar, looking about to see if anyone else would arrive. He noticed a lack of music, and briefly considered creating a jukebox, but he figured whoever had made the program would not appreciate the deviation of the aesthetic. A pool table would also be nice, he thought to himself.

Rainns arrived as Aili was nursing her fresh drink. Looking up at the man, she smiled. “Hey there, I’m Aili”, she said in a warm tone. Resting her glass on the wooden, stain marked surface of the bar, she extended a hand to the other cadet.

“Good to see you again, doc,” Kast said, settling into a seat. “Root beer, pinch of mint,” He ordered from the bartender as he took the weight off his legs. It felt like he’d been walking or running all day long. “Thanks for the upcheck on my physical.”

Mika shrugged. “All in the job description, right? And I do love my job,” she said. “So how are you liking the ship so far? Great, right?” She asked, trying to strike up some small talk. As she spoke, she sat in a seat not right next to his, but close enough to converse comfortably.

Rainns took a sip of his drink, noticing the cadet at the bar that was sitting at the bar, she seemed to be distracted by something on her mind for a split second, but out of the corner of his eye Joseph saw the Cadet turn towards him, after she had greeted him and extended her hand, he turned to her and firmly shook it. “Hello, Joseph Rainns,” he said, doing his best to make eye contact. The first two minutes of a conversation were always the most awkward for the cadet. “Did you make this program?” he asked, breaking eye contact and giving the holographic pub another look around.

Aili matched the strength of Rainns’ grip. “Nice to meet you Joseph”, she responded through a friendly smile. At least the real people don’t stare weirdly, she thought as he looked away. “Eh, no”, she answered, “it was on file already.” She had chosen from the extremely extensive list of pre-created programs upon her arrival at the holodeck without much thought. Her regret for not taking more care was growing as odd anachronisms had begun to arise. First a group in dark uniforms had entered the bar before slowly making their way around the perimeter of the space, as if they were looking for something, but thankfully left long before any of the crew arrived. Then there had been the odd staring of the bartender… Even though they were just part of the program, she was somewhat glad of her choice of dark, comfortable garb. Had she not changed out of her uniform she would have felt rather exposed. Bringing herself back to the moment, she returned a new question. “So which department are you with?”

Kastyi nodded as he sipped his root beer. The Academy drink of choice, mmm-mm! “It’s an amazing ship. You hear a lot about training cruises being aboard older ships, it’s something special to get on board something so much newer. Makes me excited for what kind of work we’ll be doing.” His ear twitched, setting his Bajoran earring to a slight jingle.

(Cadet Satyol, Scientist)

“It’s certainly not the newest ship in the fleet, but you’re right, it’s ages newer than the rust buckets most Cadets get to fly around on,” Mika agreed. “We do all sorts of little things, smaller tasks of course. Because what’s a better teacher than experience, right?” She ordered a drink, just a soda, and began sipping it. “I dunno about the other departments, but it’s definitely nice over in the Sickbay to have at least mostly recent equipment.”

Rainns finished his look around the holographic room. “Interesting,” he turned back to his fellow cadet. He pointed to his uniform in response to the question, “Security,” he answered, “how about yourself?”

The doors slid open once again as another cadet entered: Greiss. His black hair was messily arranged into something resembling a parted formation, just barely. He was a fairly tall man, but certainly not a strong one, possessing a lean and partially lanky physique. He was 21, but his youthful face, as well as something of a clumsy demeanor, made him look no older than 19. Greenish-blue eyes peered out from his almond-shaped eyelids as he peered about the room, noticeably impressed by the elaborate scenery.
“Hi, uh, I’m Winston.” He said to the socializing cadets as he approached them.

~Cadet Winston Greiss, Engineer.

“I mean, I appreciate being checked out by newer equipment, so.” Kast chuckled, then waved to the Engineering cadet. “Hey there, Winston. I’m Kast. Gearhead, huh?”
