Cadet Marshall glanced at her timepiece as she walked past the office door for the third time, wishing, again for the third time, that she had her brother’s much more relaxed temperament. Perhaps then she would have been reading in her quarters rather than pacing the corridor fifteen minutes early for her appointment. Jacob never took anything seriously and yet, somehow, he still managed to be the top of his class and the family paragon. Hayley shook her head trying to clear her thoughts. “Never mind” she mused, “It’s not like I really had any interest in the family business. It just would have been nice to have my presence in the family acknowledged once in awhile.” Hayley was sick and tired of being invisible. It was safe, but incredibly boring.
Thinking back, she realized that the day she told her parents she was joining Starfleet was probably the first time they actually seemed to see her. Glancing at her timepiece, Hayley suddenly realized she had been standing in front of the office door, lost in thought, for at least ten minutes. “Well, here goes,” she thought as she pressed the door chime.

The doors slid open silently. The office on the other side of the door was unlike any area in the rest of the ship. It was lit in a more subdued manner than the rest of the ship, with the light coming from wall lamps rather than the typical overhead lighting. Multiple bookcases with glass enclosed shelves lined one wall, filled with copies and originals of many texts on many different subjects, and a quick glance would show multiple languages as well. The desk was set at an angle against the opposite wall to the door in the corner, allowing for a large open space in the middle. Here there was a couch and a few chairs, one of which sat in front of and facing away from the desk. Pictures hung on the walls, some were even old photographs. Each depicted either places, individuals, or groups of people, and many were in black and white.

The Counselor was wholly plain looking; in fact so nondescript that he almost blended in with the office. His voice, on the other hand, was distinctive. “Hello. I am Lieutenant Commander Korczak. Please come in, Doctor Marshall. I trust your trip to the ship was uneventful?” The man had a most unusual accent, as if two wholly unrelated accents were vying for control. Even with that, his speech was clear and articulate; with crisp pronunciation and diction. The only other noticeable fact of the man were the glasses perched on his nose… actual glasses.

As Cadet Marshall stepped into the room, much of the tension obvious in her manner drained away. She couldn’t resist doing quick survey of the bookshelves and photos as she entered and soon had a soft smile on her face. In the few moments between entering the room and approaching the desk her demeanor had gone from visibly frazzled to calm and centered. “Your office is lovely.” she remarked and then realized she hadn’t answered his question. “And yes, the trip was uneventful, thank you for asking.” she added quickly.

“Excellent.” the plain looking man replied. “Do have a seat, Doctor. I was just about to make some tea. Would you care for some?” and he rose from his chair and made his way to a small cabinet. He opened a door and pulled out a small tray with several glasses and a small brown box on it. “Black Currant and Lemon is what I have, although the replicator does a fair job of most.” and he made his way to the device. =^=Water, hot, in kettle. =^= he said, and a moment later the object materialized.

“That sounds lovely, thank you,” Hayley replied while choosing a chair facing the desk. Her eyes wandered briefly back to the bookshelves before she sat and finally made eye contact. One corner of her mouth quirked slightly upward (quickly suppressed) as she noted the glasses for the first time.

OOC: I haven’t posted a bio yet but I am working on it… but her records would show that she is the first in several generations of her family to pursue any kind of off-earth endeavor.

Ooc: Excellent! Thank you for the information!

IC: Korczak turned and said “Oh, no. Please sit over there.” and he nodded in the direction of the seating area away from the desk. “I find having a desk between me and others puts up an unnecessary boundary. And in here, we can discuss… well… anything.” and he set the tray on the low table and placed the tea in the kettle to steep.

Hayley stood and then seated herself in one of the single chairs in the open area, looking around the office openly and no longer trying to hide the fact that she was curious about the books and photographs. “Your office reminds me of Dr. Rentz’s study back home.” she remarked, “He really loves his books. I used to spend hours in there reading them”

Koczak looked at her and said “Dr. Rentz? A friend of yours, perhaps?” he asked in his odd accented voice. “Perhaps someone who encouraged the pursuit of medicine?”

Korczak, CNS

“Yes sir, “Hayley answered, “Dr. Jarod Rentz is the Sr. Physician in our community back on Earth. Even when I was a little girl he was willing to talk with me about science and medicine. His stories about serving in Star Fleet fascinated me. I was drawn to it all from a very early age, much to my parents chagrin.”

Koczak looked at her intently and a small furrow of his brow appeared. “They, your parents that is, do not approve of your choice?”

Korczak, CNS

“Only initially,” Hayley replied, “Once they realized I was serious about it they respected it even if they didn’t necessarily understand it. There was some underlying disappointment that I wasn’t another family artist, but they weren’t going to tell me who to be. One thing about artists, they have a great deal of respect for individuality.”

Korczak chuckled and said “Most do, yes. Tell me about Doctor Rentz. Are they still someone you speak to?”

Korczak, CNS

“Oh yes, we’ve stayed in touch,” Hayley replied, “He told me he expected our regular progress reports to continue.” She shook her head and smiled, “It’s been wonderful having someone like him looking out for me. I hope to be as good a mentor for someone else some day.”
