William Alexander Blakely could not believe his luck. After years of studying to become a science officer, he was rewarded by being posted to one of the most magnificent ships he could imagine - USS Challenger. On a vessel like this, the very embodiment of humanity’s curiosity and desire for peace, he can finally spread his wings and learn the trade among the stars. Who knows what life has in store for him? A new lifeform to discover? Some unknown space phenomenon to understand? Or perhaps a fascinating ruin, hosting perfectly preserved artforms of a long-dead culture. His mind wandered on the way to his commanding officer’s office and he almost bumped into several crewmates on the way.

He could not wait to meet his new commanding officer. Lieutenant Junior Grade Aili McMorran. William heard that, like himself, she was fascinated by cosmology and stellar phenomena. More interestingly, she was also from the sceptered isle of Great Britain. It had been a while since his last visit to Greenwich, his hometown, and he missed it terribly.

He waited for a while outside the COS’ office. He took a deep breath and announced himself. Walking in, he tried to look confident, yet humble.

“Cadet William Blakely reporting for duty.”

The doors parted to reveal the primary science lab, its whites and greys gleaming with cleanliness. Worksurfaces intended for scientific equipment and apparatus lay bare, give or take a handful of PaDDs scattered here and there. Instead, what drew William’s attention was a large digital display spanning nearly the entire left hand wall of the lab. Across its surface equations and numbers had been written, apparently by hand, and graphical simulations of stars and nebulae danced in the far corner. The worstations of the lab, however, as well as the chair behind the desk that lay in the furthermost corner, were unpopulated.

A rattling sound continuously rang out from beyond a set of parted doors set in the wall to the right. The noise was abruptly cut off when William announced himself. Quickly thereafter a head sporting a curly ginger bob poked from around the corner. “Ah, welcome! Oh, you’re tall… Excellent! Would you mind giving me a hand in here? This cupboard has some right high shelves!”

OOC (out of character): Welcome, welcome! In this thread I’ll aim to give a chance to bring your new character to life and help you get to grips with the in and outs of STF. I see you’ve already put up a bio which is excellent! :)

One note: we sign of posts with a ‘signature’. You can see mine above. You can format it however you like, so long as it contains at least a name (even a single name) and an indication of position. Your’s would be something like ‘Cadet Blakely - Science’.

William looked with awe at the beautiful simulations of stars and nebulae, and his mind wandered for a moment. He looked at the person who greeted him and smiled.

“It would be my pleasure!”

He walked towards the cupboard pointed to him, happy to help, still looking around the room.

Cadet Blakely - Science

OOC: Thank you for such a warm welcome! I’ll try to remember about the signature :)

The lab was sparse. Blakely could almost taste the metal of some of the harsher, shinier worksurfaces.

The interior of the cupboard was quite a different story. Behind the parted doors was a surprisingly large space spanning bag several meters. A central floorspace was flanked by cupboards reaching from the floor all the way up to a ceiling about two feet above the cadet’s head. The Scottish woman was stood beside an upturned container. Evidently she had been trying to raise her reach to the upper shelves. “Thank you kindly!” In her now outstretched arms William would find an clear-topped container within which several clear bags were visible, each seeming to house a diverse collection of what looked like bones. “If you could stick that in the gap on the top shelf you would make a fair fine first impression!” the CSO smiled.

OOC: Good to have you aboard. Any questions, any time, just let me know! :)
