“Wow. You’re room is lovely,” Ari responded.
It took him a pause before continuing. He ever so slightly tilted his head to the right as he spoke again, his voice smoother, “I was told to see you.”
He picked up into animated happiness, smiling and gracefully lifting his arms, his hands closing part-ways, “I was excited to meet a new psychiatric professional.”
He calmed from his joy, lowering his arms back down, “My mothers are in psychiatric, you see. I find it quite beautiful of a profession.”
He realized after, “I hope that doesn’t make you uncomfortable.”
He smiled again, gently, as he shook his head while lowering it from anxiety, looking to the floor, “Sorry. I’m not being very professional. I should focus on work, for which I am here.” He lightly laughed.

Vanessa laughed lightly. “Not at all. We’re always excited by things that remind us of home, don’t you think?” She looked at the vase again and nodded. “Yes, I think it looks better there, with the painting there, keeps the red accents balanced.” She held out her hand to the cadet. “And forgive me! I’m Counselor Lofton. Please, have a seat.” She gestured to the sectional right next to the vase, and seated herself on the other leg of the sofa, crossing her left leg over her right, her left arm along the back of the couch.

“My job here is to help get you settled into life aboard the ship, help you acclimate to really working in a team environment. This first session is really just to get to know you, and isn’t an evaluation, really.” She laughed again, a light, airy sound. “You wouldn’t have made it this far if Starfleet didn’t think you had what it took.”

She paused for a second. “You mentioned your mothers both worked in psychiatry. My mother did as well - I always had to wonder when she was sing those skills on me! What was it like for you?”

Ari entered the office, and answered, “Whenever I would act up as a child, my biological mother evaluated it, then explained to me what I was really doing. Whenever I had a problem, she evaluated it, and gave wise counsel, along with what I really seemed to want to do, and whether it was right or wrong, then she guided me toward what she felt was right.”
He seemed a little amused as he continued, “My other mother was more like a sidekick. She hasn’t studied as much in psychology, but is about as intelligent, applying it greatly to vehicles. She loves cars, farm tractors, boats, spaceships. Of course, she only hobbies in mechanics, and never pursued an official education in it, but she’s passionate about it.”
Then, he got personal, “Mind you, I haven’t always listened to them, or believed them. And, I don’t think they’re always right. I’ve always preferred to make my own choices, to their dislike. And, to try to hone my own skills. I don’t like, or trust simply being told what to do, or how to do it. Sure, I’ve made mistakes. But, it’s my life to make mistakes in.”

Vanessa nodded along. “Hobbies are good. Something we can turn to to get fulfillment from if we’re not always getting it from our day-to-life. It’s often easier to feel passionate about things you don’t have to do,.” She sipped the hot chocolate and placed it on the table nearby. and uncrossed her legs, leaning forward onto them.

“Parents always try to help their children make what they think is the best decision for their life, but you’re right, it ultimately is the child’s choice. It sounds like you had a good support system in place to help you choose wisely, and to support you if you make a mistake.” She sat back up and reached for the hot chocolate again.

“So, speaking of hobbies - what hobbies do you have? What do you like to do when you’re not working or studying?” She sipped the drink while waiting.

He slowly smiled before answering with a positive passion for his hobbies, still standing there, “I like super heroes, scifi, and fantasy. I like to write, roleplay, cosplay, and LARP, especially in a holodeck. I also exercise, but that should be a given by my profession, and physique. And, I have to admit it, I quite like to watch beautiful women dance. A happy, confident woman dancing with skill makes me quite happy myself, and interests me in joining. I don’t have to have a prospect of a future with her, it just makes me happy to admire her, her health, and her skill, and to enjoy the moment. And, what really excites me is socializing with good company, and having fun together. I love communicating with friends, and crushes.”
