T’Saie was certainly interested in what Vanessa had to say, she had an intriguing opinion on this subject. The Vulcan took a sip of tea as the counsellor continued speaking as she raised some interesting points. T’Saie placed her tea on the table in front of her, returning her hands to lay on her lap, “Off-time?” she raised an eyebrow, “I find there is too little time to indulge in activities usually. I spent most of my time studying.” she said, it was easy to tell her Vulcan stoicism had come into effect as she didn’t intend to talk about private matters, it was clear she did engage in activities when off-duty.

However she couldn’t hold her curiosity, “What is it most people do when off-duty?” she inquired, interested in the answer.

Vanessa nodded again, smiling without showing her teeth. This was not uncommon for new Vulcan officers, she’d found; even for veteran officers. “I have a feeling that’s not quite true,” she responded, lifting the chocolate again and sipping. “Otherwise there would probably be a note in your psychological profile about it.” She held up her right hand to head off any complaints. “I’m not going to push, but… extra-curricular activities, hobbies, recreational pursuits - whatever you choose to call them - are vital to maintaining a healthy life balance. It is too easy to burn out otherwise, and happens to far too many good officers.

Including Vulcans,” she said pointedly, then finished her hot chocolate before smiling that bright smile again.

“The ship has quite a few sports fans aboard - cricket, baseball, running, just to name a few. Several enjoy reading, quite a few genres. Holodeck enthusiasts abound. Oh! The captain quite enjoys chess,” she added, her grin widening, a slight twinkle to her eye.

“You seem more comfortable discussing work,” she segued, leaning back against the sofa again. “What are some areas you hope to improve during your time aboard the Challenger?”

She’d have to keep an eye on this one, make sure she actually wasn’t spending all her time studying.

T’Saie couldn’t help but infer that the counsellor wasn’t particularly content with her answer however the conversation segued back to work related conversation, “I am confident in my abilities to finish with the Academy, I would have to say that I am looking to improve my understanding of other races..” she proposed, shifting her eyes around the room as if to study it, “it is good practice for my.. ‘bedside manner’” she said, quoting one of her tutors from before she joined Challenger. Then returning her eyes back to Vanessa, she readjusted her posture as if she was relieved to have escaped the prying grasp of inquisition.

Vanessa crossed her legs, folding her hands on her knee. “That’s a good reason to engage in some social activities,” she said. “People, of most species, can be very different off the job than they are when working. And it will help provide some stress relief,” she added with a smile.

She tilted her head slightly and eyed T’Saie as she thought. “How do you tend to react when stressed?” she asked. “And there are non-emotional reactions to stressful situations,” she pointed out. “It’s not an all or nothing situation.”

OOC: Quick note, I’ve made a quick switch from medicine to nursing! ^-^

T’Saie listened to the counsellor as she responded, to her surprise, with a logical answer. She had thought Starfleet counsellors incompetent however she was most impressed by Vanessa. The next question that came her way was a curious yet expected one, “I handle stress well, my time at the Vulcan Science Academy was more than apt at preparing you for stressful environments.” she squinted slightly as if thinking, “Training with Starfleet can sometimes help condition you for stressful situations.. in my experience.” she proclaimed, wondering if that was enough to satisfy the question.
