Henry laughed with her, mildly confused himself until he realized exactly what he had said.

“Connecticut. My family home was about half an hour outside the state capital. Sort of a rural area, lots of solar farms. But we moved to just North of San Diego when I was fifteen, since I already knew I wanted to join Starfleet. I’m still not used to how much sun they get out there.” How far from work should we be, exactly? he thought. Testing the waters could be in order. But he held off for the moment.

She chuckled. “That is quite a difference in climes. And a big move for a family to make; and you, for that matter. Were you an only child?”

“No, sir. I have an older brother, he lives out in Rhode Island, a professor. He’s probably smarter than me, actually, but he wasn’t interested in Starfleet at all. His heart’s in teaching. So that left it to me. And yes, it was quite a move, I have to say, I missed the snow. The Academy gets some, but not Connecticut blizzards.”

Vanessa gave an open-throated laugh. “You’re the first person I’ve ever heard say they like blizzards,” she said, shifting to lean her side against the sofa back, legs tucked beneath her. “And I hate to break it to you, space gets even less snow than San Francisco,” she added with a grin.

She glanced at the wall chronometer and frowned. “Well, our session is almost at an end. So let me ask you: what are some areas you hope to improve while you’re here, and how can I and the senior officers help you accomplish that?”

Henry smiled, getting the sense that the Counselor took great joy in her job, that she liked to converse just as much as she liked to do hard work. “So I’ve been told. But other planets might have snow, you never know.” He shifted in his seat, trying to maintain some semblance of posture while looking at Vanessa.

“I’d just like to get a general sense of good decision-making. The Academy has some great, refined training regimes, but it’s been my experience that nothing can beat actually doing something, even a point-for-point simulation. So, put me to work, I guess is what I’m saying.” His brows knitted slightly, he continued, “And I do know that I mentioned this, but I would like to get a sense of responsibility of command, even just from observation. Lieutenant Anders seems like a great opportunity for that. But mainly, I just want to get into the thick of things.”
