“Commander,” Tiernan’s friendly Irish lilt came with an equally friendly nod. “Cadet Casey, reporting.”

(OOC: I’m also going to assume that Connor’s character has joined us - we can pretend that Connor’s character is with us, and then once he is back he can continue RP-ing in this thread.)

Eric was already in the runabout when two cadets arrived. “Come in, both of you” the XO said. “Stow your kits and we’ll get out of here.”

Closing the runabout’s hatch behind the cadets, Eric tapped the comm. =^= Runabout to the Bridge. We’re leaving Challenger. Will report once we see how it reacts. =^=

(OOC: You’ll see that I have sent communication to the bridge. This has to appear in two places: in this thread and on the bridge. So once I finish this post, I’m going to cross-post on the bridge so that they get this communication.)

=/\= Acknowledged, Commander. =/\=

As Eric spoke, he used the runabout’s link with the shuttle bay to open the bay doors. Activating the engines, the runabout lifted off the deck and started flying out into space.

“Grab a seat, cadets,” Eric said. We have a ship out there that’s behaving oddly, with no life-signs and no responses to our hails. Science is getting signals from the ship that resemble a nervous system, and the ship seems to be using plasma exhaust as a way to send some type of signals to Challenger.”

Eric smoothly guided the runabout both towards the other ship and away from Challenger so that the runabout was not in a direct line of sight between the two ships, and made sure shields were active. He brought the runabout to a rest to see if anything changed.

“If the ship is somehow alive, it might also think that Challenger is as well. We’re going to see how it also reacts to us, which might give us more insight into what is going on,” Eric explained. “Keep your eyes on the scanners, and make sure we keep Challenger informed of what is happening.”

As the roundabout approached the other ship it backed up slightly before commencing the brilliant display of color once again and then drifting towards the Federation explorers as a puppy approaches its master for nose boops.

Eric looked over to the cadets. “What do you think,” he asked. “It seems to be acting very… playfully. Almost like it is quite young.”

While waiting for the cadets, Eric decided to use the runabout’s thrusters and do a couple gentle curves to see how the other ship reacted.

-Cmdr. Eric Holmman, XO

Eric thought some more about the way the other ship was acting. Maybe it was nothing, but it reminded him of some of the playfulness and curiosity of some of younger marine species his parents used to study, which he sometimes played with as a kid. While waiting for Cadet Casey, he tapped his communicator.

=^= Runabout to Challenger. This ship… I’m not sure, but it seems to me to be acting like curious and playful offspring. If that’s the case, where would the adult be? =^=

-Cmdr. Eric Holmman, XO

Vanessa’s voice came over the com. =^= That does make sense. And more reason to be cautious, as we don’t know how mama ship might react to us being near her baby. =^=

“=/\= Anders to Commander Holmann, Cadet Stadi and I are attaching a probe to a photon torpedo to see if we can get our new friend to follow it around. Keep an eye out. =/\=”

Shortly afterwards, Eric saw the fireworks display from the torpedo launches, and the other ship’s quick movement to the Challenger’s stern. Eric decided to follow it. “Hold on,” he announced. “It’s on the move.” Eric quickly started to bring the runabout around to the Challenger’s other side as well.

“Any new readings,” Eric asked the cadets. “Or suggestions?”

-Cmdr. Eric Holmman, XO

Eric brought the runabout closer to the other ship, and ran his own scans to see what is happening.

=^= Runabout to Challenger. Any orders, Captain? Should we be looking for a warp signature for any similar ships? =^=

-Cmdr. Eric Lorien, XO

=/\= Challenger here. We are scanning for similar warp signatures. =/\=

Davis, CO (crosspost)

Suddenly another ship dropped out of warp almost right on top of the Challenger and the smaller playful ship. This one was several times larger than the Challenger and by extension the little thing running around. When the larger ship appeared the warp signatures scanning obviously picked it up along with every other scan. The thing was a massive version of the smaller ship but looked like it had been cobbled together from many other spacefaring vessels. In fact detailed scans would show a type of spider shaped droid scurrying about its surface.

When it dropped out from warp on all frequencies a major blast of audio was broadcast on all channels. It sounded very much akin to a mother scolding a child. You didn’t have to be a biologist or engineer to pick up on tonal qualities after all. Soon after the blast the Challenger picked up that the larger ship was targeting the smaller one as a tractor beam was powering up.

”=/\= Anders to Commander Holmann, you are clear to come home =/\=,” came the voice of the COS after the din subsided.
