Holodeck - Graduation

After a good deal of work, the holodeck had been transformed into an old Earth carnival, complete with sugary snacks and thrill-inducing roller coasters and other rides. Emmy stood in the middle of a small stage that would have ordinarily been used for a musical performance, but looked slightly out of place with an official looking podium adorned with Starfleet’s insignia and colors. It was time to graduate the next class of cadets and she hoped that the environment would add something a little different this time than the standard snacks and beverages.

The duty roster had been set to ensure that the ship was minimally crewed so that almost everyone could attend the event.

Sat in the ships lounge with a half-finished cup of mocha and a PaDD detailing research on micropathology, T’Saie was curious as to the nature of the call to the holodeck. With some small degree of effort she got up to return her cup to the replicator before making her way to deck 5 along with a small number of other staff.

Once she entered, herself and the other staff dispersed throughout the holodeck. She couldn’t help but notice the decorations and the rides, from her knowledge they were some form of ornamentation from Earth however that was as far she was willing to hazard a guess. As they waited for more people to turn up, one table displaying all sorts of foods caught her eye. As far as she could tell most of them were earth foods however some were rather colourful and intriguing she thought as she stood there stoically, seeing what was on offer..

Lieutenant Junior Grade Kyle Anders had been on his evening patrol when the call came through to report to the Holodeck, so he straightened his uniform and caught the next turbolift down. When the doors to Holodeck Two parted, he marvelled at the sight of the old 20th century carnival. Once he caught sight of his CO, he made his way over, “Good evening Captain,” he said as he climbed onto the stage next to his CO.

As Sapeth entered the holodeck, he once again wondered on the human propensity to make a spectacle out of everything. Nodding to several of the officers present, Sapeth found a place to stand and wait for the ceremony to begin.

Vanessa turned the vase in her office 180°; the plant naturally would turn to face the artificial UV source in the ceiling, but she liked the daisy facing the room. She poured a few milliliters of water into the pot and was walking the can back to the replicator when her terminal chirped and the captain’s message came over. She shrugged to herself, placed the can into the wall slot, and pressed the button to recycle it before leaving.

As she entered the room, she paused to take in the visible breadth of the program. She watched as a rollercoaster took off down a hill, the occupants screaming in terrifying glee, while other riders reached the top of a more sedate Ferris wheel. Her eyes widened and she smiled widely when she spotted a food stand, and she practically ran over.

There was a line, but as she approached everyone in the line immediately walked away, which made her pause before realizing it was the program’s way of dealing with actual guests at the stand. The attendant looked at her expectantly from behind a hanging assortment of treats, yet more in a heated case off to one side, and an array of machines behind her.

“What’ll ya have?” the teenager asked as Vanessa stepped up.

“A cotton candy, please,” she replied, bouncing on her toes, then spied one of the machines on the back of the stand. “Make that two cotton candies and a coffee,” she amended. The young woman grabbed two of the bagged fluffy treats from the rack and handed them to Vanessa before pouring her the dark drink into an honest-to-goodness tall paper cup with the logo of the fairgrounds on it, matching the one emblazoned on the worker’s shirt. She popped a lid onto it and handed it over to the counselor, who thanked her, grin shining her appreciation.

She walked her handful over to the stage and set her items down, taking the lid back off the coffee, and set about tearing one of the sugary floss candies into pieces, which she would drop into the coffee and watch dissolve.

“Hello, Captain,” she greeted her commanding officer on the stage, dropping another piece into her drink. “Lieutenant Anders,” she nodded to the security chief. “To what do we owe the festivities?”
