Alison sat nervously in her seat on the runabout, headed for the Challenger. She understood that there was no reason for her to be nervous. Yes she would be responsible for teaching the next class of cadets, but she had been a TA during her Masters degree, and while she was at the Academy. So teaching was not exactly new. But why was she still so nervous?
“You okay Lieutenant?”
“Hmm,” she responded looking over at the pilot. It took a second for her mind to catch back up with what he had said. “Um, yes I’m fine. Why do you ask?”
“Well, I said we were approaching the Challenger, and when I looked over you had sort of a far off look. I don’t mean to pry Ma’am…”
So he had noticed… Not a great start Alison, she thought. “Just mentally preparing myself for the arrival.”
“Of course Ma’am. Well when you are ready, they have signaled that you are free to transport aboard.”
“Thank you,” she said as she pushed herself back from the console and stood up. Grabbing her backup, she slung it over her shoulder before picking up her duffle bag. “And thank you for the ride.”
“Anytime Lieutenant,” the pilot said grinning over his shoulder as Alison stepped onto the transporter pad.
“Energize.”
As she materialized on the Challenger, it only took her a moment to gather her bearings.
“Welcome to the Challenger Lieutenant,” the transporter chief said stepping around the podium.
“Thank you Chief, it’s good to be here.”
Stepping down from the transporter pad, Alison approached the chief.
“They wanted me to pass along their apologies for not having anyone here to meet you when you arrived, but there was a minor emergency. In the meantime, they wanted me to let you know that your quarters are ready on Deck 3, and that the Captain will meet you in her ready room as soon as you are settled in.”
Alison blinked, she wasn’t sure what to think. While it wasn’t exactly normal, she also wasn’t sure what she expected upon her arrival. This was only her second ship board assignment, and they didn’t exactly cover what the normal procedures for welcoming new crew members on board was back at the Academy. “Thank you Chief. I guess I’ll make my way up to my quarters first.”
“Very good. I’ll let the bridge know that you arrived, and once again, welcome to the Challenger.”
