As the away team approached the ruins the first thing that they noticed, or at least anyone who had read the primer on the system and the culture, was that these were not Menk in origin. They were something wholly different. In the rock pyramid rising out of the jungle were the images of some bipedal creature fighting with a large disk in the sky. Any cadet who was making scans would be told of the paint flecks that covered the edifices indicating a brightly colored past compared to the dull grey granite rock.

“Yes, Captain”, Stan replied to the order to begin a survey of the ruins. He was glad he got that out before they actually reached the ruins. Because once they approached them he was speechless. He hoped his jaw hadn’t dropped open. This isn’t right…, he thought.

“These aren’t Menk ruins…Captain,” adding the last word as he realized he should be making a report to the senior officer and not just thinking out loud. “At least, I’m pretty certain they aren’t. The design, the iconography, this doesn’t match what the Federation Anthropological Database has on file for this system.”

Glancing at his tricorder for the first time, he added, “I also think these ruins might be older than expected. There are some faint traces of paint that appears to have faded away.”

Stan reached into the lab kit slung over his shoulder and pulled out a container so that he could take a sample of the ruins with the paint flecks and try to find out some more about this mystery.

Cadet Wisniewski, Scientist

(OOC: You’ll see I have trimmed the thread by removing some of the older posts and noting that with “<snip>” comment. You should look to do that in your threads - main sim or otherwise - when they it starts to get a bit too long. For threads with multiple people like this, there are different ways of seeing how much to remove. In this case, I trimmed back so that each participant still had at least one post displayed - although as you get more experienced you may be able to trim back more.)

With the team at the ruins, Eric started to deploy the team. “Wisniewski, if these aren’t Menk in origin, see what you can make of them. Maybe we can date these ruins? I’ll also get Challenger to assist.”

Eric then turned to Las. “Cadet, see if you can find a way to enter these ruins - and maybe make sure they won’t collapse on us when we enter.”

Finally, Eric looked over at Ko standing guard. “Let’s do a perimeter sweep of these ruins. Make sure we’re not about to have any surprise visitors. I can join you in a moment.”

Eric looked over at Davis to see if she had any further orders.

Emmy nodded once, briefly, to confirm Holmman’s orders. “Compare the ruins to the known ruins in the Federation database to see if they can be matched to another species, focusing on geographic proximity.”

Davis, CO

“Received, Captain.” M’rahja grabbed her tricorder and set it to scan for life-signs in their area. With some fiddling she tuned out the smaller animals hiding in the jungle. So far the only pings were the away team. M’rahja was not one to trust science alone, and performed many visual sweeps of the area. Her gaze drifted towards the carvings, which were not in line with what she knew of Menk culture. Cadet Wisniewski report confirmed her suspicions.

Commander Holmman addressed her next, and M’rahja nodded in return. “Understood. I shall start on the east side, and work my way to the north.” Privately, she was glad for the excuse to move and look more around the surrounding area. It was a mixture of nerves and excitement, of being out in the field on an unknown moon with unknown dangers.

Cadet Ko (Security)

(OOC: You’ll see that I trimmed the thread as it was getting long. In this case, I decided to snip out everyone prior to our arrival at the ruins. We can still pull up those older posts if we need to refer to someone earlier that was snipped out. It’s good for each of you to try trimming a post when you get a chance to do so - you’re future fellow players will love you for it :P )

Eric looked to see that everyone was doing something, and then began doing wide area scans of the ruins with his tricorder.

Hoping he got enough from his location, he tapped his communicator. =^= Holmann to Lt. Barr. We found some ruins but we don’t know the origins. Can you see what you can make of it with Challenger’s library? It would be helpful to see what species was here and where they came from. I’m uploading my tricorder scans now. =^=

-Cmdr. Eric Holmman, XO

=^= Sure thing Commander. Give us a few minutes to take a look through our database. =^=

Lt Barr - CSO (crosspost)

As the cadets and away team started to fan out and investigate the structure several things would be instantly noticable.

First, Ko stumbled, quite literally, across a loose stone and when kicked with her foot rolled away from where it was resting, revealing a carved slot almost like a peddle ready to be pushed.

The science information came back with some possible matches in the database, either too far away for a pre-warp civilization to have traveled or not close enough to make sense. They had several similarities to some other ruins a few light years over, similar in structure and design with similar markings but nothing definitive. The curves of the writing was alien in form. One thing was certain, these were neither Menk nor Valakian.
