Lieutenant Junior Grade Henry Rodier stood next to his desk, looking out the viewport on the wall of his office. A clearly newly-assembled cabinet sat in the corner, and on the wall opposite his desk hung a photograph depicting a darkening, dusky sky, with grays and blues meeting reds and yellows over a forested landscape.Determined not to forget about a check-in this type, Henry glanced at the clock, and indeed just as he did so the room’s doorbell sounded. “Enter” called the Lieutenant. As the Cadet opened the door, Rodier turned away from the window, and gesturing at the two chairs facing him, said “Please, take a seat. Cadet Petrov, I assume?”

There was a brief pause. On the other side of the door Seb Petrov took a deep breath and corrected his posture before entering the office.
His eyes were immediately drawn to the artwork on the wall opposite the desk before turning to face Henry as he was addressed. A slightly nervy smile spread across his face as he strode across the room; he had agonised over the best method of introduction to his new boss, finally electing to offer a handshake at the last moment.
“That’s correct. Seb Petrov, glad to meet you, Sir.” Offering his right hand to shake, his left hand resting on the chair offered to him.

“You as well, Cadet. I’d introduce myself, but I assume you know who I am, otherwise you wouldn’t be here.” Rodier took the junior officer’s right hand in his own, heartily shaking it as a genuine smile spread across his own face. As he released Seb’s hand and shuffled behind the desk to his chair, Henry spoke again. “So, how are you finding the Challenger so far? Did you just arrive, or have you had some time to settle in?”

Seb could feel any nerves begin to melt away as they released the handshake, having overcome the first hurdle of his induction on the Challenger with apparent success. He slid into the chair offered to him, leaning back slightly into the seat and crossing his right leg over his left as he would in an informal conversation.
“I’ve just arrived actually and… So far I’ve been focussing on finding my way around; while I spent several years on a space station, I’ve otherwise only been on passenger vessels until today. I’m expecting to be busy, but I’m excited to be here.” He spoke through a smile, pausing for a brief moment to shift in his seat.
“Oh and yes, you were mentioned on my posting details, you must be Lieutenant Kyle Anders, Chief of Security. I hope to learn a great deal from you, Sir.” Seb still smiled, clearly unaware of the mistake on the record.

Henry smiled. “Ah, I see the record’s just as slow to update as it was when I graduated. Well, you got the Chief of Security part right, anyway, but Anders moved on, oh, it was only a week or two ago, actually. I was promoted to take his place.” Bowing slightly and with a flourish of his hand, he continued, “Lieutenant Junior Grade Henry Rodier, pleased to meet you.”
Rodier sat down at his desk, taking up a relaxed position similar to the Cadet’s. “As far as learning, we’ll both do plenty of that, I assure you. Is there anything in particular you have in mind, in that regard?”
