Alison set her own cup down as she thought about what he had said. “I get what you are saying. But you also can’t rule out the possibility of some sort of higher intelligence ‘seeding the galaxy’ to create humanoid species. Your theory just accounts for the cultural similarities between humanoid and non-humanoid species.

“But as you dig into it, it’s almost a statistical anomaly that there are so many humanoid type species. This form is decent overall, but it is not the best,” she said gesturing to herself. “Not to mention the sheer amount of similarities between all of the different species. So what drove all of the different evolutionary processes to end up at such a similar form?”

Lt Barr - CSO

OOC: No worries, I was a bit slow in responding to your previous post here, so it was easy for this to get lost in the shuffle! Glad I used the snip well!

Stan nodded. “Oh yes. Certainly ancient humanoids seeding the galaxy explains the prevalence of the form. Like you said, it doesn’t seem like the best form overall. Why not something with thicker skin, or dozens of razor sharp teeth…or wings!”, he said, flapping his arms with that last comment.

“But even if that explains the prevalence of the form, I don’t think it can totally account for the cultural similarities since it doesn’t also take the similarities with non-humanoid species into account. Trying to explain both- the prevalence of the humanoid form and similarities between humanoid and non-humanoid cultures- is a big task. And I’ll admit I can’t do that yet. But that is part of the fun of being a scientist, I think, trying to come up with an explanation that takes all of the data into account!”

A small smile grew on Alison’s face, Stan had a good head on his shoulders, and would be a good officer in the long run. Enough spunk, and a sense of wonder that would make him a good scientist.

“Well I hope you’ll have a chance to explore the universe and work on that theory of yours then.” Picking up her cup, she took another sip. “So before I let you go to finished getting settled in, do you have any questions for me?”

Lt Barr - CSO

Stan smiled too, happy that the Lieutenant appeared intrigued by his theory and not put off by his enthusiasm. He took a sip of his own coffee while thinking up a question to ask her.

I could ask something about the equipment in the lab, but I already know that from the specs, he thought. I could ask her if anybody on the ship plays racquetball…but would she even know? I should ask something…

His coffee swallowed, he asked a question he hoped was open-ended enough that it might get him an interesting response: “Is there anything important I should know about the Challenger beyond the information that was in my orientation materials?”

Cadet Wisniewski, Scientist

“I don’t think so. The basic orientation materials are pretty comprehensive these days, though within the science department there is a lot of specialized tech that you probably have only had a passing experience with,” Alison said as she trailed off thinking about his question a bit. “I guess if there is one thing I want you to keep in mind while here is that you shouldn’t be afraid to ask questions. Besides the fact that is what being a scientist is all about, it also helps us get a better idea of what you do and do not know.

“Our job is to give you the best possible chance to succeed once you leave us here. Anything else you want to know? Otherwise the day is yours. Take the time to get settled in, and check in with both the doc and our counselor. I know it’s mostly formalities, but it’s easier to get into the habit now, and not another 10 years into your career.”

Lt Barr - CSO

Stan nodded and smiled. “Thank you, Lieutenant, I will definitely let you know if I think of some more questions. I am really looking forward to working with you on the Challenger!”

He finished his cup of coffee then stood up. “If you don’t mind, I will see if I can complete my check ins with the doctor and the counselor now.”
