Office: Head of Engineering- Cadet Parata checking in for duty

“There wasn’t really one interest that pulled me towards this . It was just....everything.” Noah felt a surge of pride at the praise and continued with enthusiasm. “But matter-energy tech was one of the more advanced modules I took sir, yes.”

He looked at the toolkits on the wall. “I’d be happy to help sir. It’d feel good to get to work.”

  • Cadet Noah Parata

“Perfect, that’s what I like to hear. We’ll call this a hands-on check in then.” Dael got up out of his chair and walked over to the tool-kits and grabbed one. “Just follow me, we’ll make our way to the crewman’s quarters on Deck 6 where the offending replicator is. He should be out on shift when we get there, poor guy just wanted some caffeine before he started his day and got… that.” He gestured back at the cup on the desk, and for a moment hoped it wasn’t anything that’d eventually melt through the cup.

Walking out through the Engineering deck towards the turbolift, Dael glanced backwards as he talked. “So you say you were interested in everything related to Engineering, what was it that sparked the interest? Family member? Fellow classmate? Thrust into a crazy situation where you used some ‘fix-it’ skills, realized you had a knack for it?” Dael grinned at the corner of his mouth, knowing the last question might seem oddly specific, but that was because it was exactly his own story and was curious to hear what his new team member’s was.

“Deck 6.” he told the turbolift as the doors swished shut.

Noah looked at the cup one more time before they left. He hoped the victim hadn’t tried a sip of the mystery liquid before he discovered what had happened.

“My grandad sir. He was ins star fleet for…I think…close to forty years. I didn’t know him well when I was young as he was away but he settled back at home when he retired. He used to tell the most incredible stories.”

Noah laughed a little as the lift came to a stop and the doors opened. “His house was full of old machines. Stuff that was close to one hundred years in some cases. Just random things; an air compressor, a kitchen blender, a basic home holo kit. When I got bored he’d have me take them apart, explain how they worked, and put them back together.”

He strode forward purposefully but made sure his chief was leading the way. “What kind of crazy situation did you end up in sir?”

  • Cadet Noah Paralta

“Sounds like a good man, I think I would’ve liked him.” Dael said as the turbolift doors swished open on their requested deck. “My crazy situation? Well briefly, for a long time I didn’t know what I wanted to do. Had too many interests without one pulling me more than another. Then my colony, Betazed Nine, had a virus spread. It should be in the records if you want to know more. But after certain cells could be identified as early markers, I managed to jury rig our outdated colony scanners to pick them up. Helped the doctors be able to see early stages, get a vaccine, all that. Needless to say, that got the pull to Engineering going, seeing how it wasn’t all just about calibrating warp drives. Not that I don’t enjoy that now.” he added before arriving at the crewman’s quarters.

“Here we are.”

Dael tried the door but it was locked, which he expected. The crew member should be out on his shift, if what he told Dael about the replicator was correct. A few button keys and a Chief Engineer override later, and they were inside. The room looked like any other junior crew member’s quarters, sparse and small with a few personal items thrown in. Dael’s eyes didn’t pay much mind to looking to closely at that, he was here for a purpose and there it was in the far wall alcove. The replicator looked like any of the hundreds scattered throughout the personnel quarters on the ship, but he knew better thanks to the steaming mug of green on his desk.

“Alright Cadet, let’s see you in action. We know this thing gave him the wrong order. I will say I’m not an expert on every beverage in it’s database so I’m not sure yet whether it simply gave our unfortunate crew member the wrong item or whether that green ichor was something no one should ever drink, regardless of species or personal choices.” He extended his hand with the toolkit towards the Cadet. “While you get started, follow up question. Was your grandfather also the reason you chose Starfleet as a vehicle for your Engineering interest rather than try some civilian posting?”
