M’rahja’s expression softened at the mention of her human adoptive mother. Lauren Ko was a kind, and generous human who took in a lost and lonely Caitian with no where else to go. “It impacted a lot,” M’rahja quietly admitted. “I never forgot that it was Starfleet that saved the transport ship. I can still remember the first meal they fed us after rescue, beef stroganoff with mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables.” Not only could she remember it, but she could smell it.

“But also. . . I wanted to join Starfleet to help others. Starfleet and the Federation are not perfect, and people can and will fall through the cracks. I joined so I could find and catch those people before they’re lost to the system like I almost was.” M’rahja tried not to think about what would have happened if no one claimed her. Wondered where Starfleet would have sent her, or how long she would have waited on that Starbase. Alone and scared.

Cadet Ko (Security)

Vanessa smiled softly, and let a few moments of silence pass by. “You’re going to be a wonderful Starfleet officer,” she finally said. “I can’t wait to see what you accomplish.”

She sat upright and straightened her uniform top. “Now, what questions do you have for me?”

Lt. Cmdr. Lofton - CNS

Cadet Ko blinked at the praise, and couldn’t help a low, faint purr of satisfaction. Thankfully the sound was usually too low for normal human hearing. She was flattered by the comment, but, well, she supposed it was like how humans would hide their blushes. “It’s-. . . I hope I will be.” And that she may accomplish her goal. M’rahja was happy for the easy subject change. She’s never really knew what to do with such honest praise. “I’m curious. What brought you to Starfleet?”

Cadet Ko (Security)

Vanessa blinked, and then laughed again. “Not what I expected, but perfectly acceptable.” She sat back and thought about how to phrase this answer.

“I realized that, for whatever reason, people seem at ease with me; they trust me. And I could use that to help people. So I got my degree in counseling. Then, when trying to decide what field I wanted to work in, where I could do the most good… I thought about space, about how many people we have out here, often so far from home for so long, doing the most amazing things…” She held out her hands, smiling. “And here I am!”

Lt. Cmdr. Lofton - CNS

M’rahja thought about it and it made a lot of sense. Vanessa was very easy to talk to, and already M’rahja felt comfortable around her. “Space is quite appealing,” She agreed. Always new planets to discover, new star systems to map and endless advances waiting to be uncovered. “Alien cultures and worlds always fascinated me. People and species could be so different due to a few changes or variables in their planets.”

Cadet Ko (Security)

Vanessa nodded. “Maybe you’ll get a chance to see some of those worlds and cultures up close!” She glanced at the chrono on the wall. “I think that wraps us up for the day,” she continued, standing. “It’s been a pleasure meeting you, M’rahja. I’m always here if you need help with anything.” She extended her hand to the young cadet.

OOC: It’s been pleasure writing with you Abigail!
