Aaron tried to remember his days of medical license: “Well… First, I don’t think I am a leader. If need, I could lead a group without problems. But I think I would be the one that tries to help the group as much as he could. Guess I would be the mediator of the group.”

“And I think that’s why I’ve chosen the medical path. I like to help people, even if I don’t have to.”

Vanessa smiled softly. “It’s a wonderful calling, and I think you’ll do well at it.”

She considered the rest of his answer. “Would you like to work on your leadership skills?”

Aaron took a moment to think about it. “Not really”, he then said. “It’s not about my leadership skills, but I think it would be because I don’t like responsibilities, which could sound strange for someone who wants to be a doctor. How could I say… I trust my knowledge when it comes to a medical problem, and so I can handle the responsibilities that come with it. But leading a team or a crew is far more complex than just a patient, and that’s why I don’t really like to be a leader.”

Vanessa chuckled. “That’s excellent self-assessment, and very insightful of you.” She finished off the cocoa and set it aside.

“So, what are one or two items you’d like to work on, to improve during your stay aboard Challenger?”

Aaron looked at the counselor: “Well, I’d like to work on my sense of responsibilities. I know I can be very lazy sometimes if it has nothing to do with my job. And…” He stopped a moment, his face going a little be melancholic. His curious cadet face was gone, replaced by an aged face, more serious. The mark of an old memory that he wasn’t able to forget.

“I… I would like to… understand myself a little bit. To know who am I…” He took a deep breath, trying to smile again. “I’m sorry”, he said. “Let”s just skip that part.”

Vanessa pursed her lips. “We can definitely help with building a sense of responsibility in some ways - but that will require a lot of input and effort from you, as well.” She paused, her face softening. “Knowing yourself is harder, and often only comes with time. We can certainly schedule some counseling sessions for you.” She smiled softly.

“We are just about out of time,” she said, glancing at the chrono on the wall. “Do you have any questions for me?”
