Cadet Washburne made his way towards the Chief Engineer’s office, trying to remember the exact route he was supposed to take. He hadn’t had nearly enough time to memorize the layout of the ship and no amount of academy book learning prepares you for the immense size of a Starfleet vessel. Nevertheless he was visibly excited, studying the interior of the ship he would become very well acquainted with for the duration of his time aboard. Though he still may be a cadet, in his eyes, today marked the first real day of his Starfleet career.

Finally arriving at what he believed to be the correct office, he moved to knock on the door before triple checking he had the correct one. Today was a day for good first impressions and showing up at the wrong CO’s office to report in would be a rough way to start. Assuring himself he was in fact correct, he tidied his hair, checked his uniform one last time, and knocked, standing at attention while waiting for the okay to enter. He was unfamiliar with the Chief Engineer aboard the Challenger and their personality, but thought it was best to try and be the spitting image of a perfect cadet until he felt more comfortable.

OOC: Welcome to the Challenger! Great first post and I’m glad to have another engineer on our illustrious team! Right now I’m writing out of character (OOC), which is shown at the beginning of this post by the distinguishing “OOC:”, meaning this is just plain old me talking. You’ll see a similar one following this of me responding to your character but this time “in character” (or “IC”) as my character here on the Challenger. I’m looking forward to getting to know your character and helping you get a feel for the club and ensuring you have a great time and want to keep coming back for more!

A faint “whumph” sound could be heard from the other side of the door and a short yell. A few seconds later, small tendrils of black smoke began to seep from the edges of the door. Coughing could be heard inside and some low muttering before the door opened, washing the surrounding area with more of the black smoke. As it parted, the cadet could see a man of average height, dark brown hair, and the black irised eyes of a Betazoid standing in the doorway, trying to catch his breath. The smoke and the coughing colored his olive complexion a bit, but once the offending air began to be purged by the ship’s ventilation systems he started to regain his composure.

He looked up at the cadet standing in front of him and a moment of surprise crossed his face, replaced quickly by a more confident demeanor. “Ah, Cadet Washburne,” the voice came out a bit raw still from the smoke and coughing fit. “Commander Holmman told me to expect a new member to the team. Please, come in.” he gestured with a wave to follow as he made his way back into the room, taking a seat behind the desk at the far end.

Upon entering the office, it looked fairly utilitarian through the lessening smoke. Beyond some toolkits and engineering consoles, the room was rather sparse. A spare uniform hung on the left wall, and on the right there were some racks for toolkits, one of which was missing. On the desk, the missing toolkit was open with its contents spread across it, sharing space with a small orb that seemed to bend inward or outward depending on your angle and had abstract color patterns dancing around inside it. Apart from that sole decorative item, the rest of the room spoke of a straightforward workspace. In front of the desk sat two chairs for visitors and behind it taking up most of the wall was a status board of the Challenger‘s systems, not unlike the large one in Main Engineering. Gesturing to one of the chairs in front of the desk, the Betazoid began to shove to the side the other object of note on the tabletop; a now blackened plasma coupling that still let out a few wisps of smoke as the acrid smell of an electrical fire filled the room.

“Lt. Dael Stadi, Chief Engineer here on the USS Challenger” Dael said after scooching the part out of the way enough to put his hands on the table. He pulled out a PADD from another drawer in the desk and began inputting its keys to pull up the cadet’s records. “I hope your trip here was…” he looked at the blackened mass of parts he had just been dealing with, “…more uneventful than your arrival to my office.”

OOC: Thanks, I appreciate the warm welcome and look forward to interacting with your character as well!

IC:
A series of expressions flashed across the cadet’s face in quick succession. First surprise at what he assumed was a small explosion inside the office, then concern at the smoke pouring out from within, intrigue when first faced with the unorthodox Engineer whom he would be working under, before finally landing on excitement at the thought of all the possibilities this assignment could offer.

Connor shook the grin from his face as he stepped into the office and sitting across the desk, attempting to keep a professional composure while eyeing the many tools in the office through his peripheral vision. Though he did take a few prolonged glances at the mysterious combustible device the Lieutenant must have been working on. Before long he became lost in thought about all the tinkering there would be to do aboard the Challenger. Notes that could be taken and research that could be done on an actual Starfleet vessel.

The cadet sat for a few seconds before realizing that he had been spoken to. “Oh yes, Sir. Entirely uneventful.” Connor had about a hundred questions he wanted to ask, but this did not seem to be the time or place for those questions. “That’s not to say that I was bored though, in fact I quite enjoyed observing the interior of the ship on my way here.” Pausing before adding in the requisite, “Sir.”

The Betazoid could feel the wave of surface thoughts that came off of the man sitting in front of him. Typical for a new cadet on a training ship, though he did approve of the glances to the burnt husk of a plasma coupling. He recognized the look all too well as a fellow engineer and it cause a small smile to form on his features.

“That’s good to hear, I’ll have to make sure a decent tour of the ship is given to you once you report to your first duty shift. And I’ll have the ship’s schematics sent to your quarters so you can access them from there. I’m sure you’ve already taken a peak at what the Challenger is made of, but now you should have full clearance for everything aboard.” Dael said as he tapped a few keys on a console on the desk to do just that, before looking down at his PADD.

“So, Cadet Washburne, you’ve obviously done well in your Academy classes, otherwise you wouldn’t be here on a training ship. But tell me, what led you to the Academy and working so hard in this field?”

-Lt. jg Dael Stadi, Chief Engineer

Connor nodded at the Betazoid, visible glee plastered on his face at the mention of the ship’s schematics and his newly granted clearance. At that moment, the responsibility became real, he may still have been a cadet, but he had a duty to the other people aboard. Their success, and perhaps even their health, partially relied upon him. He believed he was ready for this responsibility, but that would not deter or slow his efforts toward improving.

When the Chief Engineer asked him about his motivations, he was taken aback. He had expected that question from the counselor, but had not considered that other personnel would ask, especially not on the first day. The cadet paused and answered with the half-truth he had been accustomed to giving in these situations. “I joined the academy because I admire the work the Federation does, and I think I can make a difference.” While not technically a lie, the statement certainly did omit several truths. “As for why I work so hard, the answer is simple. All it takes is one failure to cost lives. My focus at any given time is to the preservation of life, in my eyes, no amount of effort is gratuitous in this endeavor. I spend hours figuring out the wrong answers to problems so I better understand the right ones. I fail when I can afford to so I can succeed when I have to.” There were no half-truths in that statement.

“I understand that it may sound unorthodox Sir, but I promise you my first and last priority is the Challenger’s maintenance and upkeep.” As Connor paused to wait for a reaction he realized he had not stopped to breathe at all while speaking and attempting to catch his breath without alerting the Lieutenant to his breathlessness.
