Vanessa sat up in bed as a sound awoke her, and then blearily looked about as a voice seemed to come from nowhere and everywhere at once. She rubbed her eyes and the computer chimed the incoming communication sound again, and she recognized it this time. “Please play back message,” she groaned, falling back onto her pillow.
She sat back up quickly when she heard the captain’s voice and quickly slapped the comm panel on her bedside table.
=^= Lofton acknowledges, =^= she said, then hit the panel again, closing the channel. She stared at the darkened ceiling for a few moments before she sighed and sat up. “Lights,” she called, standing, and crossing to her replicator, finally able to fully see.
“One hot chocolate, extra large,” she said, leaning against the wall. She didn’t even wait for the machine to begin its work before she continued. “Computer, please pull up all communications from the Ferox Thirteen colony on my terminal. Cross reference any mentions of the colony from area transport logs.” She yawned, lifted the newly created mug from the food slot, and sat at her desk. She sipped the drink, then leaned her head in her hand, waiting for the words on the screen to come into focus.

The computer listed on terminal all of the recorded communications. The colony had communicated consistently with the Federation’s Colonial Division during the first year after settling on Ferox Thirteen. Most of the communiques were regarding shipments of goods to keep the colony running, consults medically on any advanced injury or illness, and messages home to family members. Then it all stopped for six months before they called for help. They hadn’t returned any communications at all during that time.
Vanessa furrowed her brow. “That’s… unusual,” she muttered, the took a long sip from her mug, the warmth doing a lot to begin waking her up. “Computer, did supply shipments continue after the last communication from the colony?”
She was deep in thought. Something about this unsettled her.
