Emmy glanced around the bridge briefly and, deciding all was in order, turned to depart.

“Commander, you have the bridge. I will be in my ready room.”

  • Davis, CO

“Understood, Captain,” Eric replied, as Davis left the bridge. Relaxing in his seat a bit, Eric pulled up on his monitor the protocols for securing the ship during civilian visits, making sure that they were forwarded to Security as well. He also made sure that the various department preparations were all to be forwarded to him as XO.

Notwithstanding all the stress involved in this rescue operation, Eric was looking forward to meeting some new faces. “Computer, display Starfleet records for the Ferox Thirteen colony”. (OOC: This may be similar to some of the information the counselor has pulled up, but I don’t think we’ve had a chance to share the info our characters have seen.)

Precisely two and a half days later, Emmy made the trip from her ready room to the bridge, one that she had made several times over the time period of the Challenger’s trip to the colony. While it wasn’t quite time for them to be arriving by her calculation, she wanted to be prepared for it and quickly strode to her chair in the center of the Bridge. “Status report,” she demanded of the cadet at the helm.

  • Davis, CO

Eric was already on the bridge. He nodded at the Captain’s arrival, but he wasn’t surprised. He knew his CO well, and you could count on Davis being on the bridge well ahead of their arrival to be as prepared as possible.

It took Emmy a few minutes to notice the presence of the XO on the Bridge, although it shouldn’t have been unexpected given the lack of bridge-qualified officers on an Academy ship. She gave him a crisp nod to acknowledge his presence, but mostly kept her laser focus on the cadet at the helm until he informed her of how much longer they had before they reached the colony.

Eric waited for the cadet’s reply to the Captain’s request before he himself spoke up. (OOC: I’m going to assume some of the research done elsewhere in the main sim has managed to make its way to the XO by now :) )

The cadet looked up at the Captain’s arrival and status request. “We’ve just dropped out of warp and will be about twenty minutes before we enter orbit. We are in range for communications and a sensor sweep if you’d like.”

Emmy offered another curt nod to acknowledge the cadet’s report and then turned to the science station on the bridge. “Conduct a full active sensor sweep of the vicinity,” she instructed the occupant. “Launch two probes to assist since time is of the essence.” She paused for a moment to consider her next words and then added, “hail the colony.”

The cadet nodded and punched in the commands to launch two probes to cover a large area around the colony and its environs. They further keyed in the comms system and began to hail the colony. After they waited for almost a half minute of continually hailing the colony they looked back at the Captain. “Hails are going unanswered Captain.” The cadet then overlayed the results of the sensor and probe readings. “There seems to be extensive damage to the colony structures. Explosions? Tectonic? I can’t really tell but I could forward this data to engineering or science.”

“Captain, I’ve been reviewing some of the research by Lofton, as well as Lieutenant Barr’s team. There’s something… unusual about this colony and the distress call. All communications seemed to have suddenly stopped for six months and that silence was only broken by this distress call - and even then, there wasn’t a whole lot of information given.”

The XO looked over at tactical before looking back at the Captain. “I think we should proceed with caution, Captain.”

-Cmdr. Eric Holmman, XO

Emmy nodded in agreement. She had read the same reports that Holmman had, but her instinct had been from the start that there was something strange about this situation and that they were flying into a particularly dangerous situation without much information. “It’ll be interesting to see if they answer our hail, then,” she commented, a slight crinkle around the outside of her eyes displaying an unexpected brush of humor in her comment. “I’m concerned what behavior has led to this situation in the first place. I don’t want it to continue on the Challenger, particularly since we will be in such close quarters.”

She looked contemplative for a moment again and then ordered, “yellow alert.” As the klaxon went off to confirm her order, she trigged her comm badge and spoke:

=/\= Bridge to All Staff. We are approaching the colony. Take your places to begin the evacuation. =/\=

“Any power sources or active Federation energy signatures? Life signs?” Eric asked. Turning to the Captain, he shared his thoughts. “There main communications may be gone, but if we can locate the survivors then we can proceed with rescue operations.”
