Miya was engaged in some extremely boring administrative tasks when a man’s voice rang out. Eager for distraction, she glanced up at the stiffly braced cadet standing in the doorway to sickbay and smiled, beckoning him into the room.

“Hello there! I’m Cadet Ven Miya, one of the doctors.” Saving the admin with a couple of taps on her PADD, she walked towards the newcomer. “So you’re new on board the Challenger, then? Take a seat on this biobed,” she patted it to indicate which one she was talking about, “and I’ll start your medical check-in. The examination is nothing to worry about - as long as everything ties up with your Academy records, you’ll be on to your next appointment quickly.” She’d found that a little reassurance never went amiss. Although she was now used to conducting these examinations, it was normally the first time that cadets had been through an onboarding medical and some could feel nervous.

While she was waiting for the cadet to get onto the bed, Miya used her PADD to call up the all-important records. “Cadet Tom Little, yes? From the Science Department?” she added with a quick smile, just to check she was accessing the correct files.

(OOC: Pleasure to be stuck with! XD You can have the record. )

“Yes, Ma’am.” Tom replied and then asked, “May I address you as Doctor?” The young medical cadet reminded him of the 1st day entering the Academy. He had to get used to addressing senior cadets, of similar ages as Sirs or Ma’ams. At least she wasn’t yelling at him yet. He speculated that either the ship was understaffed or this was part of the training for her. He thought he might be doing that someday at the last part of this ship assignment in the Science Department.

The moment he walked in, he already felt uncomfortable and it had nothing to do with the freshman attitude, nor the Doctor. He had spent too long in a facility like this in the past and it doesn’t bring back any good memories. As he lied on the bed, he hoped this check-up would end soon.

(OOC: The last sentence was not ture ;) )

(OOC: No problem! I do love the difference between what our characters say and what we think, lol!)

His question took her by surprise at first. “Well - you can if you want, but we’re both cadets so I’m happy for you to use my first name - Miya.” She lifted one shoulder in a shrug before adding with a smile, “And, if it’s all right with you, can I call you Tom?”

As she glanced back down at her PADD, which was beginning to fill up with data - much more than for most medical evaluations - Miya had to fight to keep her expression neutral. Prophets, what’s happened to him? Poor man! Intracranial injury, six months of rehabilitation - he’s had a tough time! The bioscan would likely take a bit longer than usual to tally all the different injuries; Miya sought to fill in the gap.

“From your records, you’ve undergone a lot of medical treatments.” Her voice, usually bright and bubbly, was quieter, more subdued. “How are you feeling now?”

[Cadet Ven Miya, doctor]

“Yes, Ma’a…Miya.” He soon corrected his words. “I had a bad day on my last job. But this was a half year ago and I’m sure it won’t affect my performance on the ship.” He assured, at least to show her he’s certain of what he’s saying. Although he thought about bribing a doctor to mask the records, but he didn’t want to cause any trouble afterward. Liars have no place in here, and it’s not helping him in the long voyage.

Miya? Before he was about to say something, he noticed that her nose said it all. It’s common for them to have a name in a different order than ours. So he kept the mouth shut and waited for her next question.

(OOC: He almost said mama mia! haha)

(OOC: Mama Miya? Help!!!!! :D Sorry for the woefully delayed reply.)

“A ‘bad day’?” Miya looked again at the biobed screen and controlled a wince. Traumatic brain injury, as well as clear evidence of major trauma to the legs .... he must have undergone a great deal of rehabilitation to get him fit enough to attend Starfleet Academy. Miya made some quick notes on her PADD then smiled warmly at her patient, hiding her true feelings.

“Hopefully your bad days are over now you’re here. Can I ask, though, do you have any long-term effects from your injuries? Anything we’d have to be aware of, either for treating ongoing symptoms or keeping up physical therapy to help with your recovery? This isn’t about anything that might affect your performance,” she hastened to reassure him, “but it’s about making sure that we can help you to stay as fit and healthy as you can while you’re aboard.”
