Miya laughed, liking this new counsellor. She’d felt very comfortable with Vanessa, but it looked as if the Lieutenant Comm- … as if Asher was cut from the same cloth. Well, counsellors had to be approachable, hadn’t they? And she wanted to be one, eventually.

“No, thank you, sir,” she responded with a smile. “I will take you up on your offer, though, in the near future. My aim, long-term, is to move into counselling,” she volunteered the information tentatively, “and I was shadowing Counsellor Lofton when I had some spare time - and when she was dealing with appropriate cases, of course.” She had no intention of mentioning her concerns around becoming Chief Medical Officer immediately after graduating - not in the middle of sickbay, at least. There was time enough for that ..... maybe.

As if he was a canine his ears seemed to to visualy perk up, “Oh wow thats not something she passed to me in my and over notes!” Asher thought for a moment, “Well the same arrangement can be met by me, I dont mind you shadowing myself as long as my clients dont mind it which I am sure none will and we can see about getting you the sufficient experience needed to become a counsellor.

“Really?” Miya’s reserve dissipated; she beamed with delight. “Thank you so much, sir! I mean …” she added hastily, “I know the counselling qualification is secondary to my role as CMO, but I really appreciate you saying you’ll help me towards it.” She didn’t let on that she still felt unsure at times about her ability to be Chief Medical Officer for the Challenger, even though her confidence had improved following her conversation with Aaron in the arboretum. Expressing that view in the middle of sickbay wouldn’t show the kind of leadership expected of a CMO, so she’d keep working at being a role model and hope that, one day, she’d actually be one.

Asher beamed a smile and shook his head, “Really. Besides it’ll mean less work for me in the future they’ll be two equally qualified counsellors to share the load” He teased, Asher wasn’t the only counsellor on board he had a small team but most responsibilities fell to him. “Well if there’s anything else let me know, and send me days you’ll be free and we can figure something out.” He put out his hand to be accepted for a handshake. “Its been a pleasure meeting you.”

“Thank you, sir! I’d love to help out - once I’m trained, of course.” She clasped his hand, a gesture that had once been alien to her but which, as a result of spending time on Earth, was now second nature. “I’ll let you know my free days once I’ve finished working out the new sickbay rota - that’s one of the worst parts of the job, I’ve found!” It probably wasn’t the most sensible thing to say to a senior officer, but Miya’s relief at being given another chance to complete counsellor training meant she wasn’t being as careful as she normally was.
