And that was that. Javal’s first command had concluded in a fiery conflagration against the Romulans. Like the infamous Kobayashi Maru scenario that every cadet at the Academy, including him, had to endure, Javal’s fate in this simulator ended in a similar way - with his crew in the line of fire and himself to blame for it. At least in this circumstance, there were some positives - his primary objective had still been fulfilled.

“That was a fascinating simulation, Mr. Kleine. As you humans say, it gave me much fruit for thought,” Javal said, turning over to his compatriot. He glanced over at the chronometer and noticed that he still had some time for a meal at the mess hall before returning to Sickbay for his next shift.

“Would you care to join me for a meal at the mess hall? I am sure there is much to discuss pertaining to what had just transpired in our simulation.”

‘Sure lead the way.’ Jordy said

The doors slid open to the mess hall as Javal accompanied Jordy to a nearby table.

“I will make an order from the replicator, one moment please,” Javal said.

He headed over to the replicator and ordered a warm plomeek soup with a cup of spice tea before sitting down at the table and pulling out a spoon to eat.

“I assume that after effecting your escape from the Romulan vessel, you might be experiencing a sensation of hunger as well,” he said as he began to sample his meal.

‘Yes i do, i will also order something.’ Jordy replied

Jordy wallks to the replicator and orders a plate with pasta and a cup of coffee.

Jordy grabs the tray and goes back to the table and he takes a seat.

“Good choice,” Javal replied, looking at Jordy’s pasta.

“So, I would like to hear your thoughts as to how the scenario played out. While our primary objective of protecting Ambassador Spock from the enemy was accomplished, it came at a cost. Ten crew were killed and another twenty were wounded under my command. I was aware of the risk but thought it logical to keep a Starfleet Captain safe from the hands of the enemy, as you would have given them tremendous value as an intelligence asset. Yet I still ponder if it was the ethical choice - Ambassador Spock himself would have told me that the needs of the many outweigh the few. Perhaps my actions were in dereliction of this statement.”

‘Sometimes the unlogical is a better choice then the logical.’ Jordy replied.

Javal took a moment to let Jordy’s words stir in his mind as he took a sip from his soup.

Jordy takes a bite from his pasta.

‘I know it was fake but still i was a little bit scared on the romulan ship, even if i know you can’t die in the simulation.’ Jordy said

“Indeed, while the simulation itself is a holographic projection, the decisions you made and the logic you employed during the course of the simulation to overcome your adversaries and effect your escape are real,” Javal replied thoughtfully.

“The scenario was a sufficient challenge for the both of us, in that it has granted us new avenues of inquiry into our thought patterns under the stress of duty,” he said, peering down at his soup, again lost in thought as he was wont to do.

Looking up, he continued. “Thinking back upon what you said earlier, I wonder whether the decision I made while in temporary command of the Enterprise was anymore logical than the alternative. If I had chosen to tactically withdraw, the captain of the USS Enterprise would have been lost to the Romulans, while the Ambassador and all of the Enterprise’s crew would have remained intact. Less loss of life, but the scenario’s outcome would still have been unfavorable.”

His eyes narrowed as he thought.

“But perhaps it is circumstances like these - ‘no-win scenarios’ if I remember the term correctly - where, in the end, every conceivable choice is still met with an unfavorable outcome, regardless of the logic employed. In instances like these, how would you respond to them?” he asked with genuine inquiry.

‘Like the kobayashi maru a no win scenario, but i dont know what i would do i think i need to be in the scenario to anwser it. Jordy replied.

He looks to his food and takes a bite.

Jordy looks back at Javal and says. ‘I think you were a good first officer.’
