Henry’s expression remained cool, regardless of any detection of Miya’s blush. “Of course. I’m not sure if we’ll find it in their quarters, but I have an idea of where to look.” He turned to NE Schmilblick. “Ensign, you’re with me. We’ll report back as soon as we find something.” With that, he turned and began to walk out, only to pause briefly and half-turn. “Nurse, if the Lieutenant tries anything she shouldn’t, tell me directly. That’s an order.” He gave an almost imperceptible wink in Miya’s direction, then continued through the door, Schmilblick in toe.

Schmilblick had been there the whole time, sticking out of the way to let the doctors treat his friends. He didn’t say anything at all, mostly stunned silence at what his two friends were doing and the quiet unease of realization that he might be next. When the COS ordered him to follow along he did so with a blank stare and a quick nod, shuffling behind the man with a sense of urgancy.

“Wait - what?” But he was gone before she could protest any more. Miya turned her head to meet Nurse Cadell’s impossibly straight face.

“I have my orders, Lieutenant,” she said, her voice prim, but the corners of her mouth had started to twitch.

“He winked at me! It was a joke ....” she began, her cheeks heating with a mounting blush, but broke off her protest as the nurse started to grin. Miya sighed, feeling the blush grow stronger, and gave in to a careful smile of her own. “All right. I won’t do anything foolhardy. And anyone else who comes in with this … condition … is sedated immediately, then restrained, until we’ve come up with a cure. Even if we were at full strength, there’s too few of us to care for a sickbay full of dangerous patients.”

“I’ll pass that on, doctor,” the nurse replied, nodding towards the small group of NEs working on the other side of Sickbay.

Left by herself, Miya inspected the screen above Chekhov’s biobed, where his vital signs were matching MacGuffin’s. “What’s wrong with you both?” she murmured to herself. “You and all the others ..... kosst, I hope they find that grapok sauce!” There was little point asking Lieutenant Stadi to check the replicators until she’d heard back from Hen- .... from Rodier and the ensign. All she could do in the meantime was search through the Federation database for any conditions potentially linked to grapok sauce or similar condiments.

(OOC: very well done, Gavin! That made me laugh!)

The records indicated that there were several cases of food poisonings on Federation star ships over the years, all with various and unpredictable effects. Most just resulted in the usual food born illness symptoms but some were more exotic including one that fermented carbohydrates in the body turning people into walking breweries. It was likely, or at least possible, that this illness was related to that.

Miya stared at the LCARS screen where the results of her search had been displayed. Prophets - is this it? Some of the symptoms seem to match, but I won’t know more until I can test a sample of grapok sauce! She itched to check up with Rodier, but the lieutenant hadn’t been gone for long; instead, she decided to update the Captain and XO to keep them both informed. She’d last spoken to them just before Chekhov’s unexpected attack - though, to be fair to the ensign, he wasn’t entirely responsible for his actions.

The Bajoran tapped her commbadge. =^= Ven to Bridge. We may have identified a potential cause of the illness, Captain, but we won’t know for sure until we can test the grapok sauce that seems to be at the heart of this outbreak. Lieutenant Rodier and Ensign Schmilblick are searching for it now. I’ll update you again when we have more information. =^= Again, she kept the comm open in case anyone wanted to respond.

=/\= Thank you for the good news, Doctor. Keep me informed. How are the patients doing? =/\=

Some moments pass…
=^= Rodier to Ven. We’ve located a sample of Grapok sauce - retrieving now. =^=

OOC: Why thank you!

~ Lt. jr. gr. Rodier - CoS

=^= That’s excellent! Take all necessary precautions, please. We’ll have a team waiting to secure the sample - Ven out! =^=

Thrilled by Rodier’s message, Miya hurried off to alert the remaining Sickbay staff to the incoming officers. A quarantine area, protected by forcefields, was set up near a neutron microscope and equipment laid out for the tests that would be needed to examine whether grapok sauce truly was the cause of the mysterious illness. Miya, now wearing protective gear like the other staff, waited intently for Rodier and the ensign to arrive. She seized the moment of calm to contact the cadets and ensigns who were scattered to different parts of the ship dealing with sick crew members.

=^= Ven here - report, please. What condition are your patients in? =^=
