Leslie adjusted her uniform once more, as she walked through the corridors holding what seemed like her future in her hands. She was scheduled to meet with her new department head Lieutenant Junior Grade Aaron Williams carrying her duty assignment. Leslie hadn’t expected to be assigned to a Starship on her first assignment, maybe a research institution. Shaking her head slightly and wondering how long before she would be able to request a transfer. It wasn’t as if she was against those who wanted to travel the stars, but her passion was researching. Although the Discovery had numerous research facilities, and she would hopefully find herself inside a few of them. Arriving at the Microbiology Lab she pressed the chime announcing her presence to those inside.

Aaron was a bit busy at the lab. Leaning over a microscope, he was trying to analyze some microscopic crystals when he heard the chime of the door. “Come in”, said the Lieutenant while he raised his head. The doors opened, and Aaron saw a woman entering the lab.

Walking inside of the lab, “Cadet Summers Reporting for Duty, sir” she stood at attention awaiting a confirmation from her new Department Head. As much as the thought of traveling throughout the world, the USS Challenger appeared to have some of the state of the art facilities supporting research.

Walking toward Summers, Aaron said: “Of course. I was expecting your arrival.” He goes to shake hands with Summers and add with a smile: “Aaron Williams, Lieutenant Junior Grade. Welcome aboard the Challenger !”

“Thank you sir” shaking the Chief Science Officer’s hand looking around the lab. Leslie took a small breath handing over her transfer orders to the USS Challenger. Taking a small step back, “I am happy to be here, sir” She smiled knowing that this was the awkward moment of getting to know your new leader. “May I ask what you are working on?” she inquired softly.

Aaron shows the microscope and says: “I was studying some soil sample Starfleet received from Deneb IV, and I’ve decided to study them as a personal project. For now, I’m trying to identify the crystalline network of an unknown mineral present in this sample.” Aaron stopped there, preventing himself to go further in his explanation.

“I hope that you don’t mind me asking, I find research very interesting and rewarding” taking a look over some of the instruments and data. She smiled softly, “I am working on some of my own research, you could say that I run the spectrum from Marine Biology to Engineering Sciences”. Leslie hadn’t settled upon a course of study at the Academy and had spent numerous hours learning different forms of science broadening her scope of the world and universe.

Aaron nodded, listening to the cadet. “I see. That must be quite interesting! But, as much as I regret it, we have other things to deal with right now.” Turning off the microscope, he carefully remove the sample of dirt and while he put the sample in a box, he asked: “Still, did you already report at Sickbay and to the Counselor for your evaluations ?”

“I know that I still have to do my check in with Medical, and I don’t think I am due for my psych evaluation yet, but after I have those complete. What and where do you want me to report?” inquiring about starting the duty rotation for her position aboard the USS Challenger.

Closing the box, the Lieutenant raised his head at Summers and smiled: “Oh, no need to worry about it. I’ll send your schedule in a moment. But first, I’d like to see you in my office.” Walking toward the exit, he add: “This way, please !”

Jumping back out of her thoughts regarding the soil sample that the Chief Science Officer had mentioned Leslie smiled. “Of course, sir” following her new superior officer. Leslie couldn’t stop her brain from thinking about all of the options from the soil sample, but she calmed her thoughts focusing back in on the moment and conversation at hand with Aaron.

After walking a bit in the corridors of Deck 4, Williams and Summers enter Bioscience lab 1. Another door inside the lab revealed the CSO’s Office, which stands out from the lab ambiance. The room looked pretty comfy, with a small desk and a little shelf on the wall.

“Please, sit down”, said Aaron. He activated his terminal, and ask the cadet: “Do you want anything to drink ?”

“Oh just water pleas sir” she smiled and sat down, shifting slightly having seen some of the great lab spaces that were aboard the USS Challenger. She smiled and then looked around the office, “I doubt that you spend too much time in here, if I am not mistaken sir?” she offered with a small little chuckle. “How long have you been aboard the Challenger?” shaking her head slightly to herself. She had been in such excitement to get her assignment, that she had forgotten to review the duty roster of the ship in order to learn about the crew.

The Lieutenant smiled at Summers’ interest in his Starfleet career. He can feel in her voice the excitement she has being aboard a ship, and her envy to know the crew.
“Oh, I’ve been aboard the ship for almost a year as a medical officer, but I’ve been promoted to CSO recently, and I’m still trying to get used to it.” Turning his head toward the replicator, he says: “Coffee, Latte, Hot. And water, please.”

In a flash of light, the drinks appeared in the replicator’s compartment. Aaron took the drinks and approached the cadet, handing the glass to her: “There you go.”

“Have you enjoyed your time aboard?” inquiring softly and then taking the water from Aaron, “Thank you” smiling and then listening to Aaron speak about the situation aboard the USS Challenger. “Do you have any advice for a new cadet aboard the ship?”

Walking around the desk, Aaron sat in his chair, facing Summer. He took a sip in his cup and nodded: “Sure I did! For my first assignment, the Challenger is a good one.”

Putting his cup on the desk, he continues: “As for advice, the best one I can give you is to be yourself, not to be a perfect officer. I know the first impressions are important, especially for a cadet, but everyone can make mistakes. As long as you learn from them, everything will be fine.”
Taking another sip in his coffee, he asks: “So, would you like to tell me more about yourself? For example, why did you choose the scientific department ?”
