<snip>

(OOC: It’s perfect - a bit of background for your character, a hook to let my character join in - great start! :D Welcome to sickbay … I’m Claire and I’m looking forward to RPing with you!)

Miya glanced around as the cadet approached, retrieving her PADD in preparation for the check-up and offering the cadet a welcoming smile. “I’m Lieutenant Ven Miya, chief medical officer of the Challenger.” It didn’t feel quite as strange to say that any more. She indicated the nearest biobed. “Why don’t you take a seat there and tell me your name, Cadet? Then I can call up your records and we’ll get started.”

[Lieutenant JG Ven Miya, CMO]

Sitting on the biobed he started, flustered by the strange request, “Oh sorry, I’m Cadet Kalos Onovren. Sorry, I’m not used to having to introduce myself to people, I didn’t need to very often on Betazed.” Kalos cringed at his cultural mistake, He hoped he didn’t appear insensitive.

(OOC: hope that that wasn’t too short, I didn’t really know what to do, but I didn’t just want to say that he got on the Biobed)

-Cadet Kalos Onovren

(OOC: it wasn’t too short at all - you’re doing great! You’re giving me more information about your character - he’s from Betazed, he’s worried about appearing insensitive - and all that helps me with my response. Of course, Miya doesn’t know about his thoughts because she’s not telepathic, so I’ll make sure I don’t have her react to something she doesn’t know. Kalos, however, IS telepathic, so please feel free to have him pick up on Miya’s emotions/thoughts, if you think he’d react to them.)

“There’s no need to apologise, Kalos. So you’re from Betazed? It’s supposed to be a beautiful planet.” As Miya spoke, she realised that the cadet had the black irises of his race; she should probably have noticed that sooner. Then she remembered that, as a telepath, he had the ability to read her thoughts - whether he utilised it or not was another issue. She gave him a friendly smile and tried to focus on his medical information, which had just flashed up on her PADD: age 24, engineering cadet, height, weight, vaccinations .... she pushed his last scan results to the biobed and set it up for a repeat.

“Just lie back, please, and let the biobed do its work. What do you think of the Challenger so far? What are you looking forward to most about your time with Engineering?” She folded her arms across her PADD, smiling warmly.

(OOC again: I’ve given you a few questions there to reply to - if Kalos wants to respond to them all, of course! Leaving little ‘hooks’ like this means your character can pick up on them when you reply. Now I have a question for you - is there anything in Kalos’ medical records that you’d like the biobed to highlight? Childhood injuries, missed vaccinations, old illnesses, an ongoing condition that might be affecting him at the moment - just pop them in an OOC when you reply and Miya can ask him about them in character, giving you the chance to respond. Also, anything you tell me here might give you some ideas to include in Kalos’ bio on the main Challenger page … it all helps to build up a bigger picture of your character!)

[Lieutenant JG Ven Miya, CMO]

The biobed started making its usual sounds as Kalos laid down, “The challenger seems like a good ship, I think I could come to like it here. I just feel so…” He was struggling to find words for a concept he would normally share telepathically. “I guess the best way to describe it would be green, if that makes any sense? But I definitely am looking forward to working with lieutenant Stadi, he is a very smart, very talented engineer.”

(OOC: Kalos has a long scar on the back of his leg starting just above his knee and going most of the way down to his ankle. However, It doesn’t seem to be affecting his walking. whatever it is it doesn’t show up on any of Kalos medical records. Also, sorry for the late reply I took a break to spend time with my family over thanksgiving break.)

-Cadet Kalos Onovren, Engineer

(OOC: no need to apologise! Real life comes first - I hope you had a lovely time with your family. And thanks for the information about Kalos’ scar; Miya is going to pick up on that so it’ll give us something more to discuss. Feel free to react to her thoughts, too - I’ve added in a couple of moments when you could pick up on her emotions, if you want to do that!)

Miya had one ear on the cadet’s reply, one eye on the data beginning to scroll across her PADD and the biobed’s screen. She grinned at the “green” comment. “It does make sense, once you’ve experienced Earth culture at the Academy. When one of the upperclassmen said I was a green cadet, I thought they meant I came from Orion until someone explained the meaning to me!” She shook her head at the memory, her amusement coming across clearly in her thoughts. “I’m sure you’ll settle in quickly enough, once Lieutenant Stadi puts you to work. But remember, if you feel homesick or uncertain in any way, the counsellor is there to help you. Have you had your check-in with the counsellor yet?”

A soft beep drew her attention to the biobed’s screen, which had identified a long scar on the back of the Betazoid’s knee. It travelled most of the way down to his ankle, but according to the medical data in her files, it didn’t seem to affect the cadet’s mobility. “That’s a nasty scar on your leg,” she observed, tracing it along the biobed’s screen with one finger. “How did that happen? Does it cause you any problems with walking or other movement?” The amusement had gone now from her emotions; she was focused on the cadet’s response. Although the data said one thing, the patient might say something completely different. A careful doctor always checked.

(OOC: you may have spotted that I took out your first post and added <snip> to show that something had been removed. We do this during RP to stop the posts becoming way too long … during main sims, that can happen very quickly and it makes posts harder to read. When you reply, feel free to remove my first post and add <snip> again, just to give you some practice at snipping!)
