=^= Cadet Katherine Hobbes, engineer, to XO Foley. Chief Engineering Officer Stadi and I are in EPS Systems Control. To report our immediate situation, we have teleported most of the rioters from Engineering to Auxiliary Cargo Bay to eliminate the possibility of them damaging any critical equipment and turned off the artificial gravity in the Auxiliary Cargo Bay to make it more difficult for them to engage in undesirable behavior. =^= Katie glanced over at Stadi and took his expression to mean she should slow down and take another breath. =^= We are working on assessing the status of the Engineering personnel at this time. If we could safely relocate, we would be able to complete our assessment more quickly. =^=

OOC: I’m sorry for the sudden absence; there was a family emergency that I needed to handle.

IC:

Katelyn listened silently to the exchange between the XO and the various officers on the ship. It was a skill that she’d had to spend a lot of time honing over the years, as her instinct was first to do things herself and, if that wasn’t going to work, to be as directly involved as possible. The Challenger was going to be an interesting test of just how well she’d learned those lessons over her career; her role at Starfleet Command had allowed her much freedom to stick her nose into problems as much as she would like, but now, the focus was on her as a role model for the young leaders below her.

  • Jacobs, CO

=^= Ven to Bridge. We may have identified a potential cause of the illness, Captain, but we won’t know for sure until we can test the grapok sauce that seems to be at the heart of this outbreak. Lieutenant Rodier and Ensign Schmilblick are searching for it now. I’ll update you again when we have more information. =^=

[Lieutenant JG Ven Miya, CMO - cross-post]

Katelyn’s face brightened as the CMO reported in. It was a relief to confirm that it wasn’t something systemic on the ship, but hopefully they would be able to quickly find the particular sauce.

=/\= Thank you for the good news, Doctor. Keep me informed. How are the patients doing? =/\=

=^= The conditions of the two ensigns in Sickbay are deteriorating slowly, Captain. We’ve managed to stablise them for now, but I’m concerned about their long-term prospects. I’m waiting to hear from the staff who are dealing with patients in other areas of the ship - I’ll let you know as soon as I have reports from them. =^=

While Katelyn’s career in Starfleet had given her dreams plenty of nightmare-quality fodder, it still made her heart skip a beat and her dark eyes mist to hear that two of her crew were struggling. She wrangled her emotions back into control enough to respond to the CMO:

=/\= Keep me informed, Doctor. =/\=

She knew that the CMO had already stated that she would do just that, but … it was truly the only thing she could say at the time as she sat back to hear just how many of her crew had been affected by this… sauce.

Aaron had to stop himself for slapping his palm into his forehead. It was definitely a unique solution to turn off the gravity in the cargo bay, but it would make it really hard for the crew to administer any medical assistance to those members located there. But one problem at a time. Hopefully the Doc would be able to come up with a solution to the problem.

=^=Understood Cadet Hobbes. What do you need in order to relocate, and where are you relocating to? =^=

  • Jacobs, CO

=^= Cadet, the situation if you need more time on next steps, let me know. I need to get back to monitoring the situation with the infected crew members. You can contact me when you are ready. =^=

Even though they were on a clock, the last thing Aaron wanted to do was rush the Cadet. Hopefully they would be able to get through this pretty quickly.

Cmdr. Foley - XO

In order to distract herself from waiting for the report from Sickbay, Katelyn turned her attention to her XO in time to catch the tail end of his conversation with who appeared to be a cadet of some sort. “How are things going?” she asked, hoping to get an update on what had been going on with the rest of the ship while she had been focused on figuring out the source of the infection and keeping that part of the crew safe.

Jacobs, CO

“Slowly,” Aaron sighed. “They are locking down the ship, but we still don’t know how many engineering crews are unaffected, and able to perform repairs on the ship at this moment. It seems like an abnormally large percentage of the affected are among them.”

=^= Sorry. Sorry Commander. Our main concerns is the status of the environmental control systems. In our isolated location, neither Lt Stadi nor I know what the status of that system or any diagnostics or repair efforts on that. Probably the best location to check on those issues and to assess the status of Engineering would be in the Engineering compartments. =^=

=/\= Cadet Katherine Hobbes, Engineer [cross-post]

=^= Then I recommend relocating so that those efforts may begin. We can coordinate a site to site transport from the bridge if needed. =^=

=^= “Understood,” Katie said and glanced at Lt. Stadi for confirmation… or at least a lack of correction. “Lt. Stadi and I will be relocating to Main Engineering to assess the damage there and begin appropriate repairs. Cadet Hobbes, Out.”

=/\= Cadet Katherine Hobbes, Engineer [cross-post]

=^= Ven to Captain Jacobs. We can confirm that grapok sauce found in an ensign’s quarters was one vector of infection, but the fact that the illness has spread from person to person probably means there’s another process involved. Unfortunately, we don’t know what that is yet, though my team is working on it. Until we find that out, we won’t know how the virus spreads, so anyone could become infected. I’d recommend tightening the shipboard quarantine until we have a clearer idea of what we’re dealing with, Captain. =^=

[Lieutenant JG Ven Miya, CMO - cross-post]

“Take out one head, and two more take its place it seems Captain.”

Cmdr. Foley - XO

=^= Ven to Captain Jacobs. I don’t have a definitive answer about the source of transmission, but I can confirm that the grapok sauce which is the original source of the infection is home-made, so that at least rules out the replicators as a potential source. This is a novel foodborne pathogen, but the test results and computer analysis indicate that it’s probably spread through cross-contamination - sharing food, drinking from people’s water bottles and the like. That has to stop, right away. If the crew consumes replicator-made food and drink - perhaps from the mess hall replicators only, so we can minimise the infection risk from other sources - that should help to stop the illness spreading. We’ll continue tests on the samples from sick crewmen, sir, and hopefully identify a treatment as quickly as possible. =^=

[Lieutenant JG Ven Miya, CMO - cross-post]

=^= Thank you Doctor. We will maintain the quarantine for now then, as that will limit peoples ability to share food and drink items. Draft up an alert to be distributed to all crew ASAP. Anything we can do to stop further spread will be a great benefit to the crew. =^=

Cmdr. Foley - XO
