This was a novel foodborn pathogen but there were several sisters that were quite close in relationship. One was transmitted through exchange of bodily fluids, one through sneezing, and one other, that was spread through ingestion of the toxin alone. The computer’s best guess given the information provided was that it was by cross contamination of food, shared water bottles and other things.

The sauce was homemade after all, so how ever it got infected was how the crew was infected.

Miya thanked the NEs and NCs as the results came through. Everyone had worked as a team to analyse the grapok sauce and feed the information to her LCARS terminal. She asked a few questions, sought some clarifications, but ultimately it was her task to report back to the ship’s commanding officer. Miya marshalled her thoughts and touched her comm badge.

=^= Ven to Captain Jacobs. I don’t have a definitive answer about the source of transmission, but I can confirm that the grapok sauce which is the original source of the infection is home-made, so that at least rules out the replicators as a potential source. This is a novel foodborne pathogen, but the test results and computer analysis indicate that it’s probably spread through cross-contamination - sharing food, drinking from people’s water bottles and the like. That has to stop, right away. If the crew consumes replicator-made food and drink - perhaps from the mess hall replicators only, so we can minimise the infection risk from other sources - that should help to stop the illness spreading. We’ll continue tests on the samples from sick crewmen, sir, and hopefully identify a treatment as quickly as possible. =^= She waited for the Captain’s reply.

[Lieutenant JG Ven Miya, CMO]

=^= Thank you Doctor. We will maintain the quarantine for now then, as that will limit peoples ability to share food and drink items. Draft up an alert to be distributed to all crew ASAP. Anything we can do to stop further spread will be a great benefit to the crew. =^=

Cmdr. Foley - XO (Cross post)

=^= Acknowledged, sir. Ven out. =^=

Miya’s gaze returned to the test results still showing on her LCARS screen, then drifted to the biobeds where Ensigns MacGuffin and Chekhov were being attended by heavily-garbed sickbay staff. She should draft the alert, as Commander Foley had ordered, but there was something more … something niggling at her mind ......

Think, Miya, think! There must be something else you can do! She breathed a silent prayer to the Prophets … then gasped as an idea struck her. Finding the appropriate results, she re-read them before tapping her communicator.

=^= Ven to Lieutenant Williams. Aaron - can you help? We’ve isolated the likely pathogen from a sample of grapok sauce, but we need to synthesise a treatment. The computer has identified some similar pathogens already in our database, together with possible cures. There’s nothing that matches exactly, but one looks promising. I’m sending you the data now … can you and your cadets see what you can do, please? We’ll keep running tests here too, but your expertise would be extremely helpful. =^= Aaron was, after all, a qualified doctor as well as Chief of Science aboard the Challenger.

While she waited for her friend to respond, Miya reached out to Cadet Javal. =^= Ven to Javal. We’ve made some progress with the tests; now we’re trying to identify a treatment. In the meantime, do not share any food or water bottles with other crew members - that’s a probable source of cross-contamination. How are your patients - is there any change in their condition? =^=

[Lieutenant JG Ven Miya, CMO]

=^= “Javal to Dr. Ven. Understood. There has been a notable deterioration of the affected crewmens’ symptoms, including emesis and syncope. They require immediate attention in sickbay. We are preparing them for transport as I speak.” =^=

[Cross-post from Cadet Javal - doctor]

=^= Understood, Javal. We’ll be ready. Let me know when you’re about to transport. Ven out. =^=

It was the work of a few minutes to alert the sickbay staff to the incoming patients. Several staff stayed at the neutron microscopes and laboratory tests, trying to isolate the pathogen and synthesise an effective treatment, while the remaining NEs and NCs bustled around, constructing the three emergency biobeds to supplement the five biobeds which were a permanent fixture. “Get the three surgical beds prepared too - we may need to use them as medical facilities if we get more patients,” Miya instructed one of the NEs. She was interrupted by a chirp from her comm badge.

=^= Sure, Ven. I’ll meet you at sickbay to take a sample of the virus and the grapok sauce.=^=

(Lieutenant JG Aaron Williams - cross-post)

=^= Acknowledged, Aaron. I’ll get one of the cadets to prepare the samples for you - we’re about to have more patients transported here, so I may not be able to see you when you arrive. Let’s see who synthesises a cure first - science or sickbay! =^= A trace of amusement momentarily threaded through her voice before she added, =^= And … thank you. Ven out. =^=

Quickly she passed on the information to the researchers, instructing them to prepare samples of both the grapok sauce and the pathogen for the Chief Science Officer when he arrived.

Jordy taps on his commbadge and says. =^=Kleine to Sickbay prepare to recieve some of the infected crew im beaming to sickbay with Javal and the infected crewmen.=^=

Cadet Jordy Kleine - Security (Cross post)

“Stand by - the patients are about to arrive! Check your PPE is secure,” Miya called to her staff before responding more formally to the hail. =^= Acknowledged, Cadet Kleine. We’re ready for you. Commence transport when ready. =^=

After a few minutes, the lights and hum of someone transporting into sickbay could be observed. Kleine and about five engineers appeared in the middle of the sickbay, the engineers barely aware of their surroundings much less who they were. One wretched on his side as he started to pass out again.

GM Wombat

Miya hurried forwards, antigrav stretcher in tow, aiming for the crewman who seemed to be most ill. “Let’s get them onto the biobeds,” she instructed the sickbay personnel, helping to position the stretcher so they could transfer the sick man to the bed. As the biobeds began to fill up, Miya paused beside Cadet Javal. “Report, please, Cadet. What treatments have you used on these crewmen?”
