Miya nodded as the cadet explained how he’d been injured, keeping one eye on the rest of the results which were scrolling across the biobed’s screen. She had a certain amount of sympathy for his story - teammates who worked closely together often did become like family; she had felt the same bond with her fellow prylars at their abbey on Bajor. Miya had to fight a surge of emotion as she thought about her friends: occasionally, just occasionally, she felt every klick of her distance from Bajor.

She pulled her attention back to Onovren. “It does explain what happened - thank you for your honesty, Cadet. But it might be better to add at least some of that information to your records, if only to stop you having to go through the same explanation every time you join a new starship!” She offered him a wry smile. “I’m sure you could develop a report which covers the broad spectrum without going into all the details. In the meantime, if you wish, we could look at the scar to see if dermal regeneration might be possible now. Your leg might not hurt at the moment, but scar tissue can slowly develop into keloids that might impair movement in time.”

(OOC: your snip technique was perfect! It’s just the posts we cut. Feel free to keep snipping away so the thread doesn’t get too long! If Kalos has any questions he’d like to ask Miya, now might be a good time .....)

“You know you dont need to try to suppress those feelings. While I agree, maybe you don’t want the whole world to see them, remember…” Kalos tapped his head and gave Miya a warm smile. “If it means anything to you, I know how that feels, at least a little. My entire family is home on Batezed.” Kalos’s smile was replaced by a distant, puzzled look as he was reminded of his mysterious new betazoid friend, Nerira. Suddenly remembering what he was doing he started “Anyways, I’m afraid I dont speak medical, but I assume Keloids are not something good?”

-Ensign Kalos Onovren, Engineer

The knowledge that he had picked up on her thoughts brought a flush to Miya’s cheeks, but she focused on his enquiry rather than her embarrassment - for now, at least. “Keloids are scars which have become thicker and lumpier than the original scar - they’re caused by an overproduction of collagen; that’s the skin’s protein,” she added, taking refuge in her medical knowledge. “Keloids can cause pain, tenderness, even impaired mobility in some cases, so I’d like to avoid that happening if at all possible. I can understand why the dermal regenerator didn’t work at the time of your injury, but we can do tests to see if it might be possible to regenerate the skin now that some time has passed - if you’re willing, of course. There’s no hurry; it’s important that you settle in before we do anything.”

That brought back thoughts of Bajor; she glanced away briefly, then looked back at the cadet, feeling somehow that she owed him an explanation. “The reason why I’m thinking of my home is … well, there’s a big religious festival starting soon. I’ve always been able to return to Bajor for at least part of the Time of Cleansing - it’s a very important month for my people - but … not this year.” Miya managed a smile. “I can fast here, of course, and abstain from such worldly pleasures that exist aboard the Challenger - which means the XO’s hot tub is off limits,” she was only half joking, “but … it’s not the same as being home. As I’m sure you know!”

She sighed. “I’m going to give myself the same advice I’ll give you. Talk to the counsellor about how you’re feeling - whether it seems relevant or not, it’s good to get it off your chest. I’ll be making an appointment soon, believe me!” Good mental health was an essential part of being a Starfleet officer, which is why counsellors were key members of the command staff.

“Well I don’t see any reason not to just deal with it now, unless of course it’s not something you can do quickly. Why can’t you return to Bajor this year? From what I’ve heard Starfleet is very understanding about situations like these.”

-Cadet Kalos Onovren, Engineer

She turned away to the equipment rack, not wanting him to see the sudden sheen of tears. “I could do the procedure now, yes. It won’t take long.” By the time Miya returned, dermal regenerator in hand, she had regained her composure. “You’ll need to uncover the area with the scar - it’s better if I see it directly, so I can be sure the skin is regenerating successfully. Either pull up your trouser leg or remove them, whatever’s easiest; you can cover yourself with this.” Miya held out a blanket as she triggered the privacy screen which would allow the cadet to disrobe. As he was preparing, she answered the second part of his question, keeping her face turned away.

“As for why I can’t attend the Time of Cleansing .... to be honest, I haven’t asked. I’ve only recently taken over from the previous Chief Medical Officer and I don’t want to seem as if I’m … well, eager to take leave when I’ve just been promoted.” She shook her head, thinking about everything that had happened recently. “The Prophets will understand. I’m sure they will.” Pulling her thoughts back to the moment, she pasted on a professional smile. “So - are you ready? This won’t hurt at all, though it might feel a bit ticklish.”
