Side Sim - Holodeck

Posted Dec. 27, 2021, 5:02 p.m. by Cadet Katherine (Katie) Hobbes (Engineer) (S. Kimmel)

Katie stood outside the holodeck entry portal long enough to confirm that the holodeck was empty and not running a program.

“Computer, start program ERB A Princess of Mars. Set modesty level to high. Set program parameters to allow other crew members to join with safety protocols engaged. Set my character to Dejah Thoris with simulated costume and accoutrements.”

“Please designate starting point.”

“Begin at Dejah’s first appearance in the story. Set initial level to inspection mode.”

“Simulation is ready. You may enter at any time.”

The doors slid open and Katie stepped onto the deck of what appeared to be an old Terran sailing ship, except that it was twenty meters over the orangish red surface of Mars. She glanced at herself to confirm that her simulated costume was not the nearly naked exotic dancer modes that came with the lower modesty levels. This costume had more of the warrior queen vibe to it and though it was wearable, clearly the creator was a fantasizing teenage boy. The other characters on the flying boat were frozen in either combat postures firing strange weapons at the ground below or obviously trying to keep the boat in the sky despite the damaged wings. Katie nodded, Though clearly not the Mars where she had known as a child, it was close enough to remind her of home.

“Computer. Go to action mode,” Katie called out.

The air was filled with gunshots and people yelling. The engines on the ship sounded wrong. Katie moved to the edge of the air-boat and looked down at the tall green creatures shooting at her boat.

A hand grabbed her and pulled her to the deck.

“My Princess. You must stay out of the line of fire,” the soldier with very red skin said. “The Tharks would love nothing better than…”

And the soldier died slumped over her. Katie pushed him off and approached the edge more carefully. The ship was descending rapidly toward the giant green Tharks who were shooting at her. She reached for a weapon at her waist and pulled out a sword.

“Burroughs, you idiot. You think a sword is the appropriate weapon in a situation like this?”

OC: Anyone who wants to join in is welcome. Clearly it would be helpful if you are familiar with Edgar Rice Burrough’s book “A Princess of Mars” or at least the Disney movie “John Carter.”
