I was going about my regular RPing when I came across this concept of nameless NPC’s with names. I was super confused and wondered if I missed something in the players handbook about NPC’s. do the “Names” actually mean something important to gameplay, is there a name assigned to nameless characters from each department so we know, for example, when NE Tender comms to the bridge, its from engineering? This is probably a really dumb question, but I just wanted to make sure I didn’t miss something important.

Hey Mason, not to worry, no question is a dumb one, that’s why we’re here at the Academy to clear all this up for you before going to a main ship. So “NE”s (Nameless Ensigns) are our NPCs we create on this site. I think our GM covered some of it in a post, but they basically are created by us to fill roles. Since we cannot control the actions of another character, and the GM needs to fill roles to give us information (ex. a science bridge officer alerting us to something on sensors) we use NEs. Or NCs for “Nameless Cadets”. These are STFs redshirts and extras, there for a scene but not someone who sticks around. I use them a lot when I need to fill out an Engineering team on a job if I don’t have any cadets or the cadets are already on another task and mine requires two or more people.

As for the naming of “Nameless Ensigns/Cadets” there is no rhyme or reason to it. Some people use funny names (I’ve seen NE OuchThatReallyHurt during a medical emergency) or use whatever name they think of at the time. Since I’m in Engineering here on the Challenger, the NEs I use tend to be me shouting orders at random engineering crew, so I use names like NE Burton, NE Doohan, NE Trineer, NE Dawson, etc… because I like to think I’m clever.

However there is no “set” amount of NEs and no roster for them, it’s all what is needed in the moment. Some people re-use names, but for the most part, they are assigned to whatever duty they are made for in that post. NE Tender may be our GM’s Engineering NE for today, but a few months from now he may use him again as a name for a science NE. The GM may even have a list of names they use for each specific department and don’t deviate, but that’s their own choice.
You don’t have to worry about keeping track of the names or making sure you only use names used for science NEs for say security. Just so long as a post or sim doesn’t have three different NE Tender’s from three different departments running around, you should be fine.
Hope this cleared some of it up for you.
