Once at the lab, Aaron uploaded the data on the starbase computer, which took a moment. Still, it gave the scientist some time to cross his observation with the Starfleet database, hoping to narrow the research when the upload would be ready.
I don’t even think we ever heard of a substance that transports someone to another dimension, thought Aaron. But the weirdest thing is that the phenomenon only affected a part of Morton’s body, yet his vitals were normal like he never split. Weird… As he tried finding an answer, he let the computer find a similar substance capable of doing what happened to Morton, based on Aaron’s description.

The results were rather disappointing. There was no known or synthetic substance that could create a pocket universe in the manner they had witnessed. There were larger stellar phenomena that operated in similar ways on a grander scale, but certainly nothing smaller from something that simply had reacted to the nitrogen in the atmosphere.

With a sigh, Aaron closed the search window and sat for a second. The solution eluded him, and his last hope was the data he collected while countering the substance effects back at the hangar. Perhaps it’s a substance that was brought unstable and reacted in an unconventional way. Maybe the shock when the bottle fell…
The computer made a sound to alert Aaron that the data has been uploaded. Looking at the screen, the scientist began to scroll down the page to understand what happened to Morton.

The scans from the cargo bay of the scene showed that whatever the goo was that seeped out of the bottle when it broke had reacted to the nitrogen in the air and combusted. How that had resulted in the formation of miniature spatial anomaly had not been determined.

Aaron frowned at the result. Nitrogen, uh ? That explained the sudden reaction from the bottle, and even if it’s a small hint, that was a better start than nothing. Perhaps a list of the molecules reacting to nitrogen would help, thought the scientist. We’ll then be able to recreate the substance and maybe study its effects. Aaron’s finger flew on the tactile screen and entered his research.

The door opened and someone stepped in, saw Williams and stopped. Then they continued their advance. “You’re not supposed to be here. But then I suppose Alshoi is playing good host so I’m going to have all sorts of people around here now, won’t I?” a Human man said as he approached. He was in a science uniform and in his late 50’s. His ash blond hair sat in a mop of unruly curls and his pale green eyes looked, well, annoyed.

Aaron turned around in surprise, looking at the newcomer. “Oh, uhm… I thought we already have the authorizations to use your lab…” Come to think of it, he didn’t even ask for anyone in charge and just roamed around the station freely. How great of a Lieutenant I’m making, he thought ironically.

“No one asked me,” the Commander said, clearly miffed.

Leaving what he was doing for a moment, Aaron presented himself : “I’m Lieutenant Aaron Williams, from the USS Challenger. We recently had a dimensional pocket aboard the ship recently, and we needed Jupiter’s labs to better study its effect.” He finished by offering a hand to the man.

The other scientist stared at Williams hard for a moment before (almost grudgingly) shaking his hand. “Doctor Reynold Greene, Commander and Lord over these labs. You want to play around at the consoles, fine, but you start messing with anything we’re doing or actively running your own experiments, you go through me first, got it? I don’t need a bunch of inept cadets ruining my life’s work.”

Aaron grinned at him :”I’ll make sure they don’t !” Inept ? Who do you think we are, some kind of school trip ? As much as he could understand that losing his life work would certainly be upsetting to the point one could eject the first person he encounter out of this station, but the cadets, if not the whole crew, were highly trained personnel and they certainly wouldn’t be in outer space if they weren’t competent.
Still, he’s right. We’re not aboard the ship, those labs aren’t ours. Walking back toward the console, he said : “Tell me, Commander, while you are available, maybe you could help me with a problem of ours. If you have the time, of course.”
