James placed spike in his backpack, finishing up a few brush strokes on his painting. He then ventured to the turbo lift, “ deck four sick bay “. He walked the corridor to sickbay, he entered the door and seen bio beds ensigns and cadets busy with patients. He walk up to the doctor’s door straightening his uniform he rang the chime.

Dr. Rahm Vesta, a Bajoran woman in her late 50s, sat behind her desk in the CMO’s Office when she heard the door chime. The main portion of the room was decorated with wood paneling made with Bajoran rubberwood and looked more like a study, and a private exam room was attached to the left of the main office.

“Come in,” she called. In place of the traditional uniform, Dr. Rahm wore a voluminous robe in Medical blues–more comfortable to navigate around–unless she was in surgery. She straightened her badge and waited to see who was to come.

-CMO Rahm Vesta

Cadet black walked in “hello Dr. I’m here to have, my medical evaluation ma’am. I like your office, very soothing to look at.” James was in a Dashiki, of black and gold instead of his uniform on his day off. He had spike in his backpack on him. Peeking out to see who James was talking to, he was nibbling on a carrot.

Dr. Rahm rose from her seat. The Bajoran d’ja pagh earring she wore tinkled softly.

“Ah, Cadet Black,” she said, rather kindly. “Thank you very much. I’m Chief Medical Officer Dr. Rahm Vesta. I assume you’re hear for your first eval?”

Dr. Rahm noticed the hedgehog peeking out of the cadet’s backpack.

“Who’s your little friend?” she asked.

-CMO Rahm Vesta

“Yes ma’am “James set down his backpack, opening it to pick up the hedgehog .”Oh this is spike “ petting him gently.” kumnandi ukuhlangana nawe dokotela” (it is nice to meet you doctor)

Cadet James black engineering

“Well, it’s nice to meet you both as well,” Dr. Rahm said. “If you wouldn’t mind following me next door to my attached exam room, we can go ahead and get started with your evaluation.”

She hoisted the heft of her robe and a glimpse of her false leg peeked out from the hem. She strode into the exam room–in the center was a biobed and to the wall wasca sink and cabinetry and a shelf containing a couple hyposprays, medical tricorders, and a worn PaDD.

She grabbed the PaDD and began looking up Cadet Black’s record. ” If you’ll sit on the bed, it will take your vitals,” she said.

-CMO Rahm Vesta

Cadet black followed the good doctor, to the examination room. He carried spike with him, he was eating a raisin happily. As James followed Dr. Rahm, he was looking around. He sat down looking at the old padd, “ how are you doc?” Occ I will have the rest of med info filled out for you.

Cadet James black engineering

The biobed made a loud beep, weighing the cadet and checking his vitals. The numbers populated on the PaDD.

-CMO Dr. Rahm Vesta,

Dr. Rahm noted the redults in her PaDD.

“I’m doing well, Mr. Black. How about you? How are you finding your time aboard the ship? According to your vitals, you appear to be in good health. Let me take a look at your chart.”

-CMO Rahm Vesta

OCC: I’ll use what’s in your bio to denote your “chart” info in case you’d like to make any alterations! :)

“I’m doing good thanks for asking, it’s a new experience indeed. I try to stay in shape doc,can you do something for my headaches? “

Cadet James black engineering

Dr. Rahm nodded. “The whole Starfleet experience can be quite new at first, but after you’ve been part of things for a while, it does become easier.”

She looked at Cadet Black’s file. “Headaches…” she murmered. “Yes, it says here that you have a history of them as well as insomnia. We can treat you, or at least try. Do you feel like your headaches are worse before or after a lack of rest?”

She scrolled on her PaDD. “Bad right knee, too? How’d that happen?”

-CMO Rahm Vesta

“ thanks doc that would be great “, he placed spike on the bio-bed.” my headaches have always been bad, and I tore my acl years ago the pain is intense sometimes doctor.

Cadet James black engineering

Dr. Rahm frowned.

“These do sound like two different things. I’d say that we could try some pharmaceuticals–a prescription for a combination of acetaminophen and ibuprofen for the headaches and body pain?”

She began entering a prescription into a PaDD. “You can pick this up at reception when you leave from NC Ch’rellet, but I’ll give you a delayed release hypospray for now.”

She began to prepare the hypospray.

“I’d say that you could use some time in a diagnostic chamber for that leg,” she said frankly. “Perhaps you didn’t heal well from your previous ACL surgery?”

-CMO Rahm Vesta

“No doc it did not heal well, thanks I will try anything. How long have you been on the challenger? I think back as many times has that poor knee took a lot ,I use to play rugby. Not the wisest thing but when you’re young, you think your untouchable.” James laughed he pet spike as he talked,”

“I’ve not been on Challenger long. Your class of cadets is my first class as Chief Medical Officer,” Dr Rahm said.

“We’ll get the leg sorted out,” Dr. Rahm continued, looking at her PaDD. “And I completely understand. When I was a young woman on Bajor, I thought I was invincible.”

kulungile ke ( oh well ) many times I think we are tested, I went to the rugby World Cup. But got hurt so you see doctor, if I didn’t play then those memories would never exist. “

Cadet James black engineering

“The memories help,” Dr. Rahm said, bending to inject the hypospray into the cadet’s shoulder.

“This should help with any pain. You can also schedule a diagnostic appointment with NC Ch’rellet when you pick up your prescription.”

The doctor set aside the used hypospray on a tray to be recycled. “How do you feel, Mr. Black?”

-CMO Rahm Vesta

” I feel a little better doctor thanks perhaps one day we can go to the arboretum? Because I’d like you to show me safe fruit for spike .”

Cadet James black engineer

“Absolutely, James. I can do some research on hedgehog biology so that I’m prepared,” Dr. Rahm said. “I recommend that you follow up on that diagnostic appointment when you have time. Other than that, I pronounce you ready to serve.”

She placed her examination gloves in a receptacle for recycling. “Once you leave my office, speak with NC state for that appointment and your medication. And if anything flares up, our team at Sickbay is here for you.”

-CMO Rahm Vesta

Cadet black stood up, and left spike on the bio~bed, he spoke “ I will doctor thank you, I am going to leave spike under your care. Here are some pellets, he will eat them. But there no fruit ha ha ha,feel free to run test’s on him. You can keep him till I finish a malfunctioning eps conduit.

Occ spike will have fun lol

Cadet James black engineering

Dr. Rahm looked at the creature in the biobed. The biobed beeped. Healthy hedgehog.

“I– well– I’d be happy to keep an eye on the guy,” she said. “Go ahead and be sure to hurry back!”

Her mind was racing–she’d not had a pet since she was a girl and it was really her brother’s hara cat…

-CMO Rahm Vesta

Spike looked at the good doctor , then he curled up. And went to sleep . https://static.wixstatic.com/media/nsplsh_6b5f453744705667667477~mv2_d_5259_3702_s_4_2.jpg/v1/crop/x_0,y_200,w_5259,h_3301/fill/w_720,h_452,al_c,q_80,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto/Image%20by%20Siem%20van%20Woerkom.jpg

Spike

Vesta watched the little hedgehog curl up for a nap and she thought about what to do. Her first thought was to paraphrase the famous doctor, McCoy, from the first USS Enterprise NCC-1701: I’m a doctor, not a veterinarian! but she really didn’t mind to help the cadet out, and she needed to remind him to schedule a diagnostic appointment and pick up his prescription from NC Ch’rellet again anyway.

She walked to her office and replicated two small ceramic bowls and filled one with tap water. She swept the food pellets off the biobed and placed them into another.

=^=”Computer, tell me about the Earth hedgehog,”=^= she said.

=^=A hedgehog is a spiny mammal of the subfamily Erinaceinae…=^= the computer began.

Dr. Rahm sat on her stool next to Cdt. Black’s sleeping pet and began taking notes.

-CMO Rahm Vesta

When she was not paying attention to spike he vanished,

Spike

=^=…the body temperature of a hedgehog can decrease to about 2 °C (36 °F)…=^= the computer droned.

Vesta put down her PaDD and stretched her arms out over her head. But when she turned to check on the sleeping Spike, he was not on the bed.

Alarmed, she stood carefully and lifted the skirt of her voluminous robe just enough to see if he was underfoot. Gingerly, she tiptoes to the front of the biobed, and looked underneath of it.

-CMO Rahm Vesta

Spike could be found on floor by her door, he was looking at her curled up in a ball trying to look cute.

Spike

Dr. Rahm did not see Spike under the biobed. She climbed to her feet in a huff, then turned towards the door, where she spotted the guy.

“Young man,” Vesta began lecturing the hedgehog. “You can’t just go disappearing on me. I bet you’re bored just sitting in here, though.”

She didn’t want to pick him up. It felt… rude, somehow.

How does one entertain a genetically modified omnivore?” she thought to herself.

-CMO Rahm Vesta

Just then cadet black and rang the chime, holding a Canvas and can dog food. He wanted to thank vesta for watching spike.

Cadet James black engineering

“Come in,” Dr. Rahm said, turning from the hedgehog near the door.

She stood up and straightened her d’ja pagh that hung from her ear.

-CMO Rahm Vesta

Cadet black walked in and snapped his finger, spike scurried across the floor and climbed into James’s pocket. James said”hi vesta I’m back,
Here this is for spike if you need it just open it up, he will come running to you. This is my newest work https://images.fineartamerica.com/images-medium-large-5/smits-mist-tim-johnson.jpg , it is a gift for you.”

Cadet James black engineering

Dr. Rahm took the can of dog food and placed it on the counter. She admired the canvas and already planned to hang it in her exam room.

“Thank you so much! I really like it,” she said. “It has a really great balance. Is this a place on Earth or did you just create it?” she asked.

-CMO Rahm Vesta

“Your welcome ma’am,yes it is my home Africa it is beautiful there isn’t it vesta?

“It truly is–you should consider painting Bajor some day. I think we are all very fond of where we’re from. The Dahkur Province is varied but has a rather sordid history.”

-CMO Rahm Vesta

“ yea I will thank you for your time doctor.

Cadet James black engineering

“Absolutely, Cadet Black,” Dr. Rahm said. “Thank you again for your gifts. Just remember to see NC Ch’rellet to pick up your prescription for your medication and take two at a time as needed for any body pain! Come by any time, but I beluga we’ll be seeing each other at the Arboretum soon.”

-CMO Rahm Vesta

Cadet black left her office. Then walked to Ch’rellet’s desk smiling “,hello I’m here to pick up my prescription.”

Cadet James black engineering

At the reception desk, a medical DOT dropped off a sealed white paper bag. NC Ch’rellet look it and read the label.

“Cadet Black? Just take one every four hours for joint and body pain as needed,” the Andorian nurse said seriously, her feelers knitting thecair anxiously. “Do you have any questions about the medication?”

-CMO Rahm Vesta / NC Ch’rellet

“ No I don’t thank you for the medicine have great day .” James’s picked up the bag , and left the room.
