In other circumstances, Cameron would keep all his reactions to himself and never dream of revealing them. But therein lay the delicate nature of his work: sometimes revelations were necessary and helpful. That was the gamble he was playing with right now as he let his wariness sweep across his face. He inhaled deeply and nodded. “I am an engineer and operations officer. That is my background. But… I am also currently and Intelligence operative tracking a possible saboteur. At first I though that Doctor Greene was mixed up with things he shouldn’t be, but the more I’ve learned the more I’m convinced that someone is trying to make it seem that way. Why? I’m not certain and it may not matter. Greene’s work is experimental and highly classified. He knows that someone from Intelligence is monitoring his research because they are the ones that started him on his path, but he doesn’t know it’s me. You were looking for the components to make a bomb, but that might not be necessary if someone has corrupted Greene’s experiment.”

“Ah.” Vesta said, letting the news was over her.

She’d had her suspicious about Russo’s behavior–still did, to be frank–but she believed she got a glimpse of the real man letting his façade down and was willing to go along with it for now.

“Mr. Russo, I admit I know very little about the wider context going on here in this station. I’m just an overprotective teacher and I have a feeling that somehow my ship and the cadets under my care are somehow tied into this, too.

“I admit to have been suspicious of your motives at first, but there absolutely seems to be an issue in the lab and if it’s not Greene, who else has immediate access to the experiment? Someone who may have the knowledge to… explode a system?”

-CMO Rahm Vesta

Russo blew out a breath and gestured for them to keep walking. There was an emergency situation after all. “Doctor Greene is renowned in his field of biophysics and there are many scientist and medical professionals here because they get to work with him. We’re talking at least a hundred people who have access. Narrowing down skill sets isn’t as simple as you may. You can fake or hide skills. My instinct is that it’s not someone obvious. I don’t know what their end game is, but my gut also says that causing destruction in the Sol System is not the goal, but… if they sabotaged the right things and adding some other complications? It’s possible… unlikely, but still possible.”

~Mischief Maker

Vesta continued following Russo, thinking. “The Prophets. At least a hundred. What are the goals of this experiment now? That has never been made clear to me.”

-CMO Rahm Vesta

Russo shook his head. “Nor was it supposed to be. That’s the classified part. But I should clarify that the experiment is more than just the stuff going on in specialized lab. Doctor Greene has different people studying the after effects of whatever he does. Those that have access to the lab are far fewer. Maybe eight or nine, including Greene himself, Captain Alshoi and Commander Rice.”

He stopped abruptly and gazed hard at Rahm. “Greene is looking at the various and long-term effects of subspace on organic matter, and yes that includes samples of humanoid tissues.”

~Mischief Maker

Ye’phekk maktal subspace phekk kosst amojan human tissue!” Vesta muttered as the two continued toward the Science level.

Cameron couldn’t help at the expletives. He understood it, but it was still a bit unexpected.

Vesta blushed. She wasn’t sure the man spoke Bajoran.

“I’ve had my suspicions, Mr. Russo, and that little fact deepens them. Of the dozen or so people who have access, have any of them had express knowledge of the Challenger’s coming arrival or showed any keen interest in it Cargo or crewman?”

“No, not that I’ve bene aware of,” he said.

She quickly explained all that had happened with Ensign Morton and the last cadet cruise as the two continued their rush to the Science level.

=^= Challenger to Jupiter Station, report. What’s going on over there? =^=

(crosspost)
~ Lt. Rodier - CoS

=^=Dr. Rahm here with Mr. Russo. Checking on some sort of containment issue in the Jupiter Station lab. Send support and activate emergency medical support, Lieutenant, just in case.=^=

They moved swiftly and Russo kept talking once the comm call allowed. “Listen, I know all about Morton. It was why I was studying the deck where it happened. Yes, we need to make sure your ship is structurally sound, but I had that piece of deck plate removed for study. Those bottles that were found. It’s odd, no doubt, but I have no doubt that it’s tied to Doctor Greene’s experiment. This thing is, whomever took the sample didn’t need to be in the lab. Keep in mind that people were testing samples outside of his lab elsewhere. That’s why I gave you such a high number of people. Where that substance came from is a mystery and not one we have time to solve just now, but mark my words Doctor, whomever got their hands on it was up to something we’re not even a little bit aware of and my superiors want them found before they compromise another ship, or worse.”

~Mischief Maker

“We’re on the same page,” she said, gesturing with her copy of Gallitep. “I didn’t even need this book. I was just down there to check on that area and ran in to you and all of this. If only we could have been up front with each other, but I guess I understand why you couldn’t, not with all that’s at stake.”

Maybe she had been focusing on the wrong things this entire time, but they were both on the same mission after all, with the same goals in mind anyway.

“Now this lab and what’s going on are of higher priority. The Challenger can hold on a little bit longer,” Vesta said, touching her d’ja pagh earring.

-CMO Rahm Vesta

=^=Cadet Breker to Dr. Rahm Vesta. We have a situation in the labs. Something went wrong with a demonstration and now we encountering Tachion radiation. we have provisions to innoculate from it. But we only have 24 minutes before the shield fails. The lab is sealed as an emergency… it could turn into a medical emergency if we can’t shut down the system.=^= The cadet’s voice is even, though her tone is grim.

Dr. Rahm gasped at the incoming message and peered at Russo, hitting her combage and trying to remain calm for the cadets.

=^=Dr. Rahm to Ensign Brecker. We are aware and we’re on our way. To prevent against the early signs of radiation poisoning, inoculate everyone with the emergency hypospray: hyronalin and lectrazine. I’ll contact the Challenger. Please do what you can and hold on hope.=^=

To Russo, she said, “I’m worried. We need to get moving. How close are we anyway?”

She hit her combadge again. =^=Dr. Rahm to Halcyone. Ensigns Brecker and Black are sealed in the lab with an unknown number of Station personnel. Tachyon radiation leak eminent. Lab sealed. 24 minutes before shield fails. I have told them to inoculate. Russo and I are incoming to the Lab. All hands. I repeat, all hands.=^=

=^=Dr. Rahm, thank you for the update.” Her voice was more shaky than it usually was, “What do you mean they are sealed in the lab?” It was a rhetorical question to a statement she didnt want to believe. “Why won’t the doors open? Have you informed Captain Alshoi and the Sations’s enginner? I am heading over there. What is your location?=^=

Halcyone, XO

=^=Pilar, they’re stuck.=^= Vesta’s voice broke a little, thinking of Cadets Black and Brecker. =^=It’s a fail-safe of some sort, and I believe the station is aware, unless you would like to inform them as well. I’m on my way there now.=^=

She peered at Russo.

“Are we close, Mr. Russo? I’m afraid for our cadets.”
