((So since this is a teaching ship, I thought I’d show you that not all CHECK INS needed to be ‘knock on office door’ formal. Get creative. Remember, sometimes your character can’t just shuttle in or transport up from ‘the surface’. Sometimes, they’ve been there all along (obviously not really cause you just joined) but they aren’t arriving like others. Just remember, if you are going to do something radical, commit to it. THEN PLEASE!!!!! Make sure you clear it with those involved and your CO and GM (if they aren’t already directly involved. You don’t wanna barge in on the XO while he’s in a dinner date, or arrive on the bridge in the middle of a fire fight.... grins or do you? Just make sure you get permission. Please direct questions and comments to separate OOC thread or to Discord channel. Remember, this is an RP thread))

She’d had it!

Ang’er shoved the wrench in her back pocket and shook her dark brown tresses. “This is getting ridiculous!” Rising up from the panel she had been working on, she stormed out of engineering and headed to the bridge calling back over her shoulder, “I’ll take care of this!”

On the way, the day’s events unfolded in her mind. A hand rose to stroke the forehead ridges that noted her as most definitely not human. The Klingon ridges weren’t defined enough to hide she was a half breed, but they were certainly defined just enough to keep both Human and Klingon races from claiming her as their own.

The morning had been great. She had finished supervising the third shift and was looking forward to some sleep. But then she was told the Chief Engineer, that had been called away a few days ago to help on a nearby Space Station, wasn’t going to be coming back. Ang had already been running the third shift AND making the rotation schedule for the week when Jamerson had left. For the last couple days, as Senior Engineer, she had also been dealing with all the usual stuff the Chief dealt with. That meant little sleep, and lots of anger.

=^=Computer, location of Captain Foley!=^= the half Klingon growled into her comm badge.

=^= The Captain is in the Officer’s Mess Hall.=^= The voice chirped back, unaware of the anger seething in the woman’s voice.

After the answer, she called out the deck and waited for the lift to get her there. The Captain was going to have to get them a Chief or she was gonna end up hurting someone.

A moment later, the Lieutenant stormed into the Officer’s Dining Room and glanced around. Seeing her target, she took a deep breath and marched over to the man having breakfast. “Captain, we need to talk. Engineering can’t go on like this.” She was upset, obviously. And sadly, she was also oblivious. The small handful of folks breaking their fast were suddenly silent and listening to the Shift Supervisor who had just stormed in like it was her personal space, and demanded the CO’s attention. This was going to be an interesting day, indeed.

“Good morning to you as well Lieutenant,” Aaron said as he sat his coffee cup back down on the table. He had always been an early riser, and usually it gave him a chance to get some of the necessary paperwork out of the way first thing in the morning in peace. This morning though, it looked like the paperwork was going to have to wait.

Staying calm he folded his hands on the table in front of him. “Would you like to have a seat? And what can’t keep going on in Engineering?”

Capt Foley - CO

She blinked a moment then say down. Her posture was almost rigid. She’s gone down to give the Captain a piece of her mind. But the face of the man before her actually sobered her a moment before she continued in a less growling voice.

“Sure, good morning. Sorry. But not having a Chief in engineering isn’t working. I’m running third shift, and doing rotation roster, and dealing with issues from all three shifts because I’m senior engineer.” She jaw clenched and unclenched as she spoke, again unaware her precarious the line of insubordination was that she was walking.

“I can’t keep running all three shifts like this. I don’t have the clearances and am constantly contacting the Bridge Watch to grant permissions, I can’t discipline anyone who’s being a meat head because I’m not their supervisor, and I can’t take a shift off, much less a day, because… Well because they keep coming to me with their problems.” By this time, her hackles had raised once more and she was leaning on her elbows with severe intensity in her voice and posture. The ridges on her forehead deepened with the rage and her fingers but into her palms as her fists tightened. “You haveto do something!”

It didn’t occur to get that the request came out sounding like an order.

Aaron’s eyes narrowed as he stared at Ang. “I have to do something?” His voice had taken on an edge, his posture tensed slightly as he worked to keep his own temper under control.

The young Lieutenant untensed a bit and moved back off her arms. The reality of what she’s just done had finally started to sink into her thick skull.

“Lieutenant, as the next most senior member of the Engineering team here on the Challenger, and the supervisor on 3rd Shift, you have already been given the authority as acting chief at this moment. If you are having issues with maintaining discipline in Engineering, perhaps I should be reconsidering the leadership position you have been granted here on the Challenger.”

Ang swallowed, say back in her seat and pulled her hands to her lap.

Aaron took a deep breath before taking a moment to take a sip of his coffee. “This is a teaching ship, that means there is going to inherently be more discipline issues. The cadets don’t have our experience, they are still learning how to behave on a ship. It is our JOB to show them how to behave on a ship, and how we go about solving issues, such as with orders given by their superiors. Because I’d expect members of my senior staff to come to me if there is an issue in a reasonable manner. Just as I would expect them to problem solve an issue, such as managing their time appropriately.”

Picking up his cup again he watched her over the lip as he took another sip.

Capt Foley - CO

“You are right, Sir. I apologize. Wait…” She frowned and cocked her head slightly to look at him. “Acting Chief? When Jamerson left he said for me to keep an eye on things. He never said I was acting Chief.” She shook her head a moment as she let it sink in.

Standing up, she tucked the chair back under the table and nodded to the Captain. “Sir, I’m sorry I interrupted your breakfast. I, ummm… I’ll see to it that the Cadets are taught better. I mean well. And I’ll see to it the shifts are covered and move myself to first shift to better manage my time.”

It killed her to realize that she’s been in the wrong the whole time and the Captain had put her in her spot without a hair out of place. The fact she wasn’t in the brig at this moment, did not escape her notice.

“Sit down Lieutenant,” Aaron said meeting her eye to eye. As he waited, he slowly took another sip of his coffee, maintaining eye contact over the lip of his cup.

Ang sat back down in her chair, but it was more of a collapse. Being told to ‘sit down’ meant a good taking to was about to happen. The brig might still be a viable option.

“I’m glad to see that you can recognize when the situation has changed, though we might have to work on your critical listening skills.

“I may not always get a chance to physically check in with each department as often as I’d like, but I’m well aware of what is happening on this ship. And while I would have liked to have addressed the issues going on within Engineering sooner, the situation changed before I had a chance to do so.”

Setting the coffee cup down on the table, Aaron pulled the napkin off his lap and tossed it onto his finished plate.

“Lt Jamerson was a good engineer, but he had an interesting way of teaching our cadets. However, that is not my issue any longer, as his engineering skills have been requested elsewhere. I have been working on finding his permanent replacement, and just received the final approvals and updated orders this morning.”

The young woman crossed her arms and murmured, “Good,” under her breath.

Aaron looked over at the stack of 3 PaDD’s next to him on the table. He pulled the middle PaDD out and tossed it on the table in front of Ang.

Her mind started ticking off names of candidates she thought the CE and CO would have picked. Jamerson had been amazing. Her taught Ang a lot and kept a heavy hand on her when her temper flared. He wasn’t above knocking the back of her knees so she collapsed when she was about to go off the rails. She thought of two or three and waited for the Captain to name one.

“You were his recommendation, and based upon your record and work here on the Challenger, I agreed. But based upon this morning, I’m questioning that decision. So Lieutenant, tell me, why should I not throw you in the brig at this very moment, until I can get you off my ship?” Aaron asked setting his hands on the table and leaning forward.

Capt Foley - CO

When he tossed the PaDD at her, it slid across the small table. She uncrossed her and and her right hand intercepted it before it slid into her lap. “Finally,” she exhausted with relief.

Then did a double take.

“Wait… What? Me?” She actually tapped the screen of the device in her hand. There was her name with the promotion to Chief Engineer. Then his question about tossing her in the brig caught her attention.

” No, Sir. I mean, you shouldn’t. I mean… It’s not my fault Jamerson want clear when he left. How was I to know he wanted me in charge? Now that you’ve said I am, I’d think the matter was concluded. Isn’t it?” Sure, her outburst might earn her a night in the brig. But he couldn’t fault her reason. Directions hadn’t been clear. Now that they were, it was finished. She set the PaDD back on the table, and started to stand up again.

“Sit. Down.” Aaron said punctuating each word. He was getting more and more frustrated, which meant that today was going to be a very long day.

This time, she sat down a bit more sedately. She was realizing she had pushed a line and this was her fault, no one else’s.

“I don’t care whether the directions were clear or not, it’s your attitude that is the issue. You came storming in here thinking that you were the only one who saw a problem, and then demanded it get fixed. But beyond that you can’t seem to grasp a concept we teach cadets in their first week at the Academy. Waiting to be dismissed by the superior officer.”

“Yes, Sir,” she murmured contritely.

Aaron pinched the bridge of his nose. “For heavens sake, this is a teaching ship. We are supposed to be setting a good example for the cadets, even more so from the leaders in each department. And the only reason why your butt isn’t headed for the brig at this very moment is that there are not any cadets in here.”

Aaron sighed and leaned back in his chair. “You are officially off duty for the remainder of the day, I expect for you to be in engineering at the start of first shift tomorrow. Your recommendations for third shift supervisor on my desk by the end of the week.

“And Lieutenant, the next time I see you, I expect you to act in a manner that is appropriate for a member of this ships senior staff. Now you are dismissed.”

He was so going to need more coffee for today.

Capt Foley - CO

She rose and stepped back. Pushing the chair in, she swallowed her pride. He would know what it cost her to say it, but it was sincere. “Sir, I apologize. And I will strive to do better in the future. You are right. The Cadets we train go to the Fleet and my behavior was not appropriate.” She nodded and headed out as quickly as deportment would allow.

Once in the hallway, she took a deep breath. She had nearly ended up in the brig. And the only reason she had was ‘she was put out’. She should have stepped up and filled the vacancy, then asked questions. Next time she would do better.

Now she needed a batleth and a holosuite.
