The doors to the deck four microbiology lab whooshed open as Chief Science Officer Garth shambled quickly into the room flanked by two science cadets and followed by another pair shortly behind. The clank of Garth’s cane against the metal floor rang above the scampering of booted feet as the cadets scrambled to take up stations at the various high-powered microscopes scattered throughout the room.

Garth slid the sample of plant matter that Cadet Bennet had retrieved from the Potterfield into a petri dish and popped his magnification goggles into place, which whirred as they adjusted to zoom in on the foreign substance while Garth pulled on a set of black latex gloves. Using a fine-tipped phaser-scalpel, Garth focused intently as he divided the sample into four pieces, each about the size of a small mint.

The four test pieces were distributed accordingly among the cadets. Next, Garth set a beaker of chemicals in front of each of them, along with an eyedropper to administer the toxins to the samples in the petri dishes and observe the effects under the microscopes. The four herbicides being tested were: glyphosate, dicamba, bromacil, and 2,4-D.

“Let’s find out what kills this weed,” Garth grumbled. He then moved from one cadet to the next, looking over their shoulders and taking turns peering into their microscopes as they waited to see if any of the chemicals had an effect.
