Cadet Oliver Scott made his way down the corridor, nodding slightly to other officers and cadets as he passed them. He had hardly been able to sleep last night from the excitement that was pulsing through his veins. Everything over the last several years had led him to this very day, reporting for duty on his cadet cruise. Textbooks and theory was interesting and Olly had done well in the classroom but people typically don’t join Starfleet out of a love for textbooks and classrooms. Olly was ready to get out and put those book skills to good use in the great big galaxy.

He was currently on his way to check in with the Chief Medical Officer in sickbay and was certain he should have made it there by now. He had studied the schematics and felt like he knew them like the back of his hand, but something wasn’t right. Up ahead he was certain that he had already passed this same bulkhead before and still no sickbay in sight. Finally, he decided to ask someone for directions.

“Excuse me, sir” he called out to a passing Ensign. “I’m sorry but could you direct me to sickbay? I seem to have taken a wrong turn.”

The Ensign stopped and looked the cadet over, “First day cadet?”

Olly grimaced on the inside and nodded.

The Ensign chuckled a little, “Well the good new is you didn’t take a wrong turn, sickbay is right here. The bad news is its two decks above us.”

This time Olly couldn’t suppress the grimace or the bright red color that slowly crept onto his face. He managed to stammer out a thank you to the ensign as he rushed off to the turbolift.

Finally, two decks up, he found himself in the correct place. He stepped through the sickbay doors and quickly regained his composure as soon as he heard the familiar noises and hums of the medical equipment and saw the familiar blue uniforms hard at work. Olly made his way through the department to Dr. Torrirs’ office where he knocked politely and waited to be acknowledged.

Obiah’s head shot up at the chime, confusion in the wrinkle of their brow. Had they forgotten a meeting? An appointment? Surely, if it were that important, someone would have commed them by now. In scouring their mind for possibilities as to who stood on the other side of that door, they nearly neglected the thought to welcome them inside. “Come in!” Torrirs called out.

When Oliver stepped into the office, he would find a rather unremarkable room not dissimilar to the offices on Fleet starships. The room consisted of a small desk and chair pushed flush against the back wall, a basic replicator for the occupant’s use, and an LCARS interface. Situated behind the desk, curly hair perched atop their head in a frizzy bun, Obiah sat with their attention divided between the interface and the door. They were somewhat odd in appearance with their dark skin that posed a staggering antithesis to the pale spots lining their body; the mark of vitiligo. Despite their oddity, they emanated a concoction best described as quirky confidence.

“Why, hello there, Cadet!” They greeted when Oliver caught their eye. It was then it hit them. He must be the new medical cadet! They weren’t sure why it had taken so long to connect the dots, but they left that for later speculation. “You must be Oliver Scott,” they rose to their feet, “yes?”

Dr. Torrirs, CMO

Olly smiled politely as he stood in front of the senior officer, “Yes, doctor, I am reporting for duty.”

He didn’t know much about the doctor and glancing around the office didn’t seem to offer many clues. Perhaps efficiency was something they aimed for, or just privacy. The doctor’s appearance wasn’t particularly shocking to him. While he was used to seeing Trill with opposite coloring patterns he certainly had grown up in a place where “skin was in” and had seen all sorts of shades and interesting markings. At any rate, the doctor’s physical appearance would be irrelevant. If he was going to be successful on his cadet cruise he would need to learn their personality and how they ran sickbay in order to excel and get the best evaluations he could. The interesting contrast between the stark, regulation office and the somewhat quirky appearance of the doctor would perhaps take some figuring out. Hopefully, expectations would come up during this meeting. He also hoped that the doctor would offer to get the boarding physical out of the way at the same time.

Realizing that he had been lost in his own thoughts for a moment, he refocused on the officer standing in front of him, “If I may say so, I am excited to be on board and learn from you.”
