Sinclair simply said “No, you haven’t mentioned it. What kind of nightmares?”

Sinclair, CNS

“Snakes attack the ship and take half the crew. Then I hear voices. I don’t know what they’re saying but they’re whispering. Constantly.” He took a deep breath. “It was the first time anyone died right in front of me.”

Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS

“Do the voices whisper to you while you are awake at all?” Sinclair asked.

Sinclair, CNS

“No. The voices sound like, the crew. I think I can hear you, the captain, and Bills. It’s weird because I barely ever heard Bills talk.” He solemnly replied.

Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS

“What do the voices say?”

Sinclair, CNS

“I can make out voices from when the mission took place. What Bills said before he jumped infront of me to defend me from the snakes. You’re trying to tell me something and the captain I can’t make out.”

Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS

“Do the nightmares interfere with your sleep?”

Sinclair, CNS

“Sometimes it does. I wake up in a pool of sweat.” He started to sweat and looked blankly at a wall.

Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS

“Can you go back to sleep afterwards?”

Sinclair, CNS

“Yes. It’s hard but I can. Am I going to be discharged? I don’t want to Sinclair.”

Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS

Royal looked at him with a concerned expression. “Why would you think that, Lieutenant? You experienced an extreme emotional and mental stress. Many current Star Fleet officers have experienced far worse and are still actively serving the Federation in a multitude of roles.”

Sinclair, CNS

“Uh. I’ve seen it happen to family. It is scary seeing them return and having their position taken away from them.”

Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS

“What did you see happen, specifically?” Sinclair asked. His tone was calm and understanding. Situations like this were delicate, but he trusted Casen to come through it none the worse for wear.

Sinclair, CNS

“Well, when my family returns, I’m worried. I think they were injured and couldn’t return to duty. I never knew why they were discharged.”

Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS

“Can you tell me about what happened to them? What the circumstances were?”

Sinclair, CNS

“Most of the time it was a fight they got into. Other times they were caught engaging in questionable tactics on the ships they were assigned.” He stretched and rubbed his eyes.

Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS

“Lieutenant, this is not the first time you have shown that your tired.” and made a note in the PaDD. “I need you to go to sickbay. I just put in an order for a melatonin supplement. It’s not a drug, just a naturally occurring substance in humans that helps them sleep. But I am concerned that your nightmares are affecting your ability to sleep. That is a significant issue. I want you to take the melatonin as instructed for the next three days. If you are still unable to sleep, report back to me immediately. You are the Security Chief, you need to be rested so you can focus. If, after three days you are still exhibiting signs of fatigue, I will have to send you to the doctor for a consult.” and Sinclair leaned back an looked at Casen.

“Casen, you are showing all the signs of Post Traumatic Stress. Not at all uncommon after experiencing a situation like you did. We are going to see if rest helps, as it often does. If it doesn’t, there are options to help you address it. This isn’t a condemnation, nor does it reflect poorly on you. It is simply something we will have to monitor and deal with, okay?” and he watched as the diagnosis sink in to the newly minted Lieutenant Junior Grade.

Sinclair, CNS

“I understand, sir.” Casen bit his lip as he said that. Now this, this is what I’m going to tell my cadets. Good men will die and you can’t stop it. Thanks Sinclair. You’re a good friend. You’ve stopped me from going crazy.” He got up and went to leave.

Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS

Sinclair watched him stand move to the door. “Make sure you go directly to Medical, Casen. I want you try and get a good night’s sleep. And I want to see you again in three days. Ok?”

Sinclair, CNS

“Ok. Are we still getting those drinks later? Or do you want me to just sleep?” He said as he looked back.

Lieutenant (j.g.) Casen CoS

“Sleep first. Drinks after we get you back on a regular sleep schedule. Deal?” Sinclair offered.

Sinclair, CNS

“Deal. Good night Sinclair.” Casen laughed as he walked out.
