Ashlyn finished another long sip of her water, then spoke the name with exaggeration to sound long syllables as if tasting the sound. “Tan~dra, I like it.” Ashlyn pondered on the question, letting out a low hum in consideration of an answer. “I find it engaging, I look forward to the new challenges I meet and find ways to test the limits of the boundaries of our understanding of how tasks are completed. I can appreciate that variation is welcome as long as the end goal is met and find the library for the holodeck to be rather inclusive for much of what I look forward to practicing. Navigation is easy enough, though I wish I could spend more time in the Jefferies Tubes. Unfortunately, I have to wait a week still to be allowed access to them. The crew is vibrant and ripe for paranoia and suspicion to have a field day, but I’m hoping being here makes that burden a little easier.” Ashlyn took another slow sip of her water, “Tell me something I wouldn’t find in your records if you don’t mind?”

-Cadet Ashlyn Trenton

Aili had failed to notice yet another cadet enter, and was surprised to hear the voice of Trenton from behind. When Aili’s gaze landed on the other cadet, after darting around the room, she let out an audible ‘wow’ in response to Trenton’s choice of fashion. She was rather impressed but mostly confused as to the motivations behind the design and made a mental note to inquire about it later, although the the garments couldn’t possibly have slipped her mind while in her field of vision. Taken aback by the apparent wallflower’s rather forward response to Mika, Aili gulped and turned away, as the other two cadets settled into conversation, with the intent to hide the blush she feared would invade her pale features. Refocussing on her drink, she cursed her awareness of her heartbeat as her anxiety and self-doubt flourished anew. She had been proud of herself having begun forming a bond with Tandra more easily than she had with past acquaintances, but the apparently akward member of the crew seeming so smooth and socially intelligent had punctured her self-esteem significantly.

Rainns smiled, ” I dabble in philosophy, as for my quarters....” he trailed off for a second, noticing the cadet he was talking to was distracted. He studied McMorran’s responses to what she was looking at from across the room. “Hold on one second,” he said, “you set this whole thing up so you could talk to her didn’t you?” Rainns said with a smile on his face motioning towards with mika with his head. “That’s adorable.” He took a sip of his drink, “Although something about it seems to be troubling you.”

Aili’s jaw fell slightly agape as she processed Rainns’ commentary, her form frozen in place and her gaze fixed dead ahead on a near empty bottle. The cadet’s toes curled at the thought of discussing the lengths she had gone to to meet Mika alone the day before. Nor was she at all keen to discuss what was going on inside her head, having hoped to have left all that behind in the councilor’s office. Increasingly aware that she had to respond in some way, she hoped to truncate her interrogation as greatly as possible. “I… not exactly. No. I wanted to meet all of you.” Aili smiled gently and tilted her head to direct her gaze more in the direction of Rainns, albeit focused on the bar. “She is the one I’ve had a chance to get to know already though. I… think we’re getting along… quite well. I just… hope she does too.” Lifting her head, she dared make eye contact with the man for a split second before again turning away and swigging down the rest of her drink. “In my experience, most philosophers are hopeless romantics. Are you, or do you just ‘dabble’?”, she asked in hopes putting him on the back foot, with a roll of the head which brought her formerly timid gaze to meet Rainns’ with a sense of force, accompanied by a smirk and a raised eyebrow.

“Ah, something not in my records?” Mika frowned, thinking. “Um, well, my parents owned a clothing shop, back on Earth?” She said, finally, having decided what to say. Mika considered herself… somewhat boring, to be honest, and she couldn’t think of anything interesting that Starfleet wouldn’t know about. She overheard part of what Aili was saying, something about… thinking she was getting along well with someone? But Mika did not want to jump to the conclusion that Aili was talking about her, after all, she’d only overheard a few words. So, instead, she turned her attention back to Ashlyn. “What about you? Got any cool talents? Interesting facts? I’d love to hear ‘em!”

Rainns smiled and put his drink on the bar counter as he watched McMoran stumble over herself in response to his observation. By her reaction he could tell she was caught off guard, and her subsequent answer delivered confirmation to him. When she responded with her own question Rainns smile shifted to one of amusement to one of melancholy. “ I used to be a hopeless romantic, but the real world taught me to be wiser than that.” Memories of his last relationship flooded his mind as he said this, and the pain of the recent loss stung him suddenly. He picked his drink up again, and noticing it was empty, signaled the bartender to refill it. “ Once you give your heart to someone, the only thing worse than them breaking it is when you have to take it back from them, and that’s why I’ve had to do.” As his drink was being refilled, Rainns stared back at McMoran, “how about you? Are you a romantic?” For the first time since he had walked in Rainns was glad he had come, getting into personal and philosophical conversations was how he got to know and trust people, and he enjoyed them.

Winston, who had been scratching and inspecting the bar as a test of its realism, looked up and furrowed his brow at Rainns. “I don’t think there’s any such thing as a ‘hopeless’ romantic. Everyone has someone, and you can’t just give that chance up just because of a bad experience with another person.” Greiss may have been cowardly, but the one thing he couldn’t stand whatsoever was people giving up on dreams. Tasks or objectives, maybe, but neither hope nor aspiration had he let lay dormant or dismissed from his life, and he would see sure of it that it remained within his fellow crewmates.

Ashlyn moved her seat closer to Tandra’s so she can share conspiratorial whispers with her that were more low murmurs than whispers. Her shoulder almost, but not quite touches the other cadet’s shoulder. The PaDD was turned off and placed onto the bar along with the water bottle so the weight of Ashlyn’s full attention could be given to Tandra. “Parkour and Zero G obstacle courses.” Ashlyn leaned on her elbow that was positioned closer to Tandra, still taking careful position to not touch her. The index finger of the opposite hand settled on the bar right next to Tandra’s hand as she proceeded to trace out routes from her memory. “The freedom of movement as your agile body goes from one flexible motion to the next.” Ashlyn turned Tandra’s hand over and continued to trace the path on the palm of her hand. “The confidence of each impact of your foot and hand, finding purchase on the surfaces you come across.” Ashlyn leans in a little closer, quieting her voice a little. “The loving connection as you wrap your hands carefully around the places you seek to hold onto. The air that whips past as you fall from great height knowing what lies below will catch you.” Ash leaned as close as she could so she could whisper into Tandra’s ear, “It’s exhilarating!” Ash spread her fingers along Tandra’s to lay her hand flat against the hand of the other cadet.

“I like that… Winton was it?”. McMorran rolled her head to face the engineer. “As for me…”, she began to respond to Rainns’ question, until her eyes shifted ever so slightly and were immediately drawn to Trenton. Aili’s heart folded in on itself. Her internal voice was silenced… for once. “I need to pop out for a breath of fresh air, won’t be long!”, she exclaimed in a clearly forced tone of joviality. Bringing herself to her feet, she turned and began making her away around the bar- the long way around, which avoided her passing Trenton and Mika- headed for the door and the street beyond. Her thoughts began to return. I hope there’s a downpour out there.

OOC: Fingers crossed I patched up the wee split properly. Loving the thread everyone! :D

Rainns noticed the cut in Aili’s eyes cut directly to Mika and Trenton, he also looked that direction to see what was happening. Whoever the cadet was in the dress, he had decided she was incredibly bizarre, he turned back to McMorran to express that opinion but noticed she had arisen from her seat and was clearly upset, as she walked off he turned to Greiss. “If you could excuse me for just a second.” He quickly got up and walked after McMorran. He didn’t know whether or not that was the smart thing to do, but he saw someone who was in an upset state and wanted to help in anyway possible. He caught up to her just as she was reaching the door, “Aili, whats wrong?” He also didn’t know if using her first name was the best idea, but he figured it would help ease her apparent tensions if he did. Being social wasn’t his strong suit, and the young man was well out of his depth at the moment.

Greiss sat awkwardly watching the situation unfold. “My name’s actually Winst…on…” He tried to call to McMorran, but slipped off as she walked away. Whatever was going on, he did not want to get involved. Speaking now to the bartender, he said, “Is there any way to play music in here?”

~Cadet Winston Greiss, Engineer.

Jumping to his feet, the bartender appeared from behind the bar. “Music ya say?”, he broadcast loudly. “There’s a jukebox over there mate”, he said as he pointed towards the bulky device sitting against one of the large pillars, not far behind where the other three cadets were sitting further along the bar. “It’s a bit dodgy though.” He tossed a glass in the air, letting it flip before catching it, added it to a stack, before yanking a cloth from its perch on his shoulder and beginning to wipe down the bar.

The first thing: Tandra turned bright red. The second: her mind, frustratingly, got stuck on the fact that while her flirting was unexpected, Ashlyn was… well, quite hot, honestly. As she moved closer and closer to Tandra, Tandra felt… more and more uncomfortable. She considered using her skills in Judo to take Ashlyn to the floor - but no, she didn’t think Ashlyn was actually dangerous. “U-uh....” And then she felt Ashlyn’s breath on her ear as she whispered to her, and if at all possible, she turned brighter red. She hadn’t even noticed Aili leave, she was too focused on Ashlyn. More because of how… uncomfortable Ashlyn was making her. So, she tried to make eye contact with the nearest other Cadet - Winston. A silent plea for him to jump in on the conversation, maybe get Ashlyn to be a little less… forward.

And to Ashlyn, she said, in a similarly quiet voice. “Ah, Parkour.. how… interesting,” she managed, giving a nervous chuckle with it.

Hearing Rainns coming after her, Aili was unsure whether to be appreciative or frustrated at having to keep speaking. Bursting through the door, she found herself at the top of a set of steps leading down to a bustling street. The sky was heavily clouded and the air chilly but the only sign of rain was the shallow puddles in the rough surface of the street. Damn. Aili was too distressed to realise the oddity of the street being populated by horses, carts and people in Victorian attire, in stark contrast to the more modern interior of the bar.

Collecting herself and breathing deeply, she spoke only when she was confident Rainns could hear her. “You saw what that girl was… doing with Tandra.” A deep sigh escaped her. “I’ve been, well… getting to know her”, she said those four words in a tone which made it clear she was being somewhat euphamistic, with a gentle tilt of the head between each, “for a whole day… days. Then there’s her just fast forwarding past all that. I never even really formed proper friendships at the academy. I takes me too long to open up. People get bored with me and move on.” She took a heavy stride forward and collapsed to sit on the top step with her elbows rested on her knees and her head in her hands.

Hayley dashed up to the doors of the Holodeck then paused. She didn’t want to arrive looking flustered but she felt kind of bad for being so late. ~I really should not have let myself lay down~ She scolded herself. She hadn’t meant to fall asleep, it had just been a somewhat long and overwhelming day. The doors opened and she walked in, feeling a little awkward. She really hadn’t met any of her fellow cadets yet other than in passing. She paused to take in the surroundings and smiled. Jacob would have loved this place. She glanced around, wondering where she would be welcome.

Kast watched the ebb and flow of conversations as they all got away from him. He was surprisingly comfortable with all this. He was used to crowds and bustling. So he just sat and listened, trying to get a feel for what everyone’s personalities were, letting his fellow cadets express themselves while he enjoyed the root beer, tail swishing along the floor behind him as he sat.

Ashlyn had started sweating, the extent of her social battery running dry with all the attention she had clearly gotten from this public show of affection. She determined it was time to strike a final blow and return to her quarters until her later appointment. “You know,” the cadet whispered to the blushing doctor, “that blush makes you quite beautiful, makes the sapphires stand out more vibrantly. I do love the color blue.” The index and middle finger stroked down to Tandra’s palm alternatingly in a petting motion. “It’s a shame I have to leave you here.” Ashlyn practically purrs into Tandra’s ear. With that Trenton abruptly stood up and stepped off by two paces before stopping and looking over her shoulder at Tandra. “I’ll see you tonight Tan~dra, and I’ll wear something…” Ashlyn sucks in a breath through her teeth, “Appropriate.” Then proceeds to leave the holodeck.
