As the day approached when Fayth was to be transferred to the Europa Joseph Rainns became more and more anxious. Sitting at his desk in his office, a place where he usually felt relaxed and in command, he felt nothing but anxiety and dread. There were times where he looked at his office with disgust, as it was holding him back from being with the person he loved. Despite all this, the frequent dinners had made the count down more manageable for the young security chief, and before he knew it, the final night of Fayth’s stay on Challenger had arrived. He had decided to host their last dinner, which he had made himself, spaghetti with red sauce, a callback to their first home cooked meal. This would not be their last. He had put on a red collared shirt and a pair of tan pants, and had the food on the table with two candles illuminating the area. He knew tomorrow was going to be one of the most painful in his life, but this evening was going to be pleasant and untouched by the harsh reality barring down on Joseph Rainns.

Lt. Jg. Joseph Rainns- COS

Sharah had finished her last shift on Challenger. She’d said good bye to NE Nurse and Lt. Mika. She had collected her research samples and turned in her final report on her project. She had one cargo trunk going. Other than her bonsai tree everything was packed and it depressed her. She had scoured the log records from her quarters. She’d found an image of her and Joseph sitting on her floor with the chess board. They had played almost every night. He had been trying to explain some advanced strategy to her that she still didn’t quite get. But in the image showed them sitting side by side, he was holding her hand and they were both smiling, she remembered they were also laughing at the time. She’d made two copies of the image. One was in her trunk, the other she’d wrapped to give to him. She really wanted to leave it in his office to find, but she didn’t want to do that to him on duty. So she took it with her. She wore a sandy brown peasant skirt with an emerald green peasant shirt. She left her hair down. She’d asked Joseph to let her host dinner, not wanting to leave him with that memory, but he had insisted, so she let the matter drop. Before she left her quarters she took the time to try her hardest to calm the swirling chaos in her mind. She arrived at his quarters and rang the chime.
Ensign Fayth, Doctor

Hearing the chime. Joseph took in a deep breath, “Come in.” He called out, placing food on both his and Sharah’s plate as he did so. He tried to avoid the obvious thoughts that this would be there last evening together for quite some time. He had spent the past two weeks processing the inevitable, and h was ready for it, but that didn’t mean he had to be happy about it. He pushed those thoughts away and turned to smile at Sharah as she came in. “I figured I’d have a go at making spaghetti.” He smirked. “I hope you enjoy it.”

Sharah stepped in and first she saw the candles and she smiled. She set the wrapped package on his desk, when he looked at it, ” Don’t open it yet, okay?” Her voice wavered a bit and she took a deep breath closing her eyes. She opened them and walked over to him. “You look really handsome tonight.” She kissed him and then she took a seat and smiled. “If it’s as good as it smells it will be wonderful.” She waited to start eating till he sat down.

Rainns shook his head, “Don’t worry, I wouldn’t do anything of the sort.” When Sharah approached and kissed him, he closed his eyes, cherishing every second of it. He turned back and headed to the table. “I certainly hope it turns out that way.” He said with a smile. “I actually really made an effort to make it edible, although cooking is a foreign art to me.”

Sharah didn’t want him worrying in suspense. She picked up her fork, twirling the spaghtti onto it and then taking a bite. She covered her mouth with her hand as she slurped a stray noodle. It was very good. The noddles were cooked just right and the sauce was robust and flavorful. She took a sip of her water. “This is really good, Joseph. You did an excellent job.”
Ensign Fayth, Doctor

Joseph breathed a sigh of relief. “I’m glad you think so.” He similarly began to eat. “Ready to ship out tomorrow morning?” He asked. He had considered not mentioning the looming deadline but decided to anyway. Rainns policy with discomfort was to tackle it head first.

Sharah smiled, she had learned, from being in his head so often, that he kept that calm steal trap that way simply by dealing with whatever was in front of him, good, bad, or neutral. She’d been trying to do it on her own with very limited success. “I’m packed, I have my orders. I’m as ready as I can be. What about you? How is your new team of cadets shaping up?”
Ensign Fayth, Doctor

“I have one cadet who has very similar aspirations to myself. But he is not quite the mature and level headed man I was.” Rainns said with a smile. “I have another who has a much rosier view of the Maquis then I ever will, and he is on a quest to keep Starfleet in check, as if they were responsible for the Maquis.” Rainns shrugged his shoulders, “other than those two the cadets are fairly boring carbon copies of each other.” He took another bite of his food.

Sharah smiled, listening to him. “They’ll get better, that’s why you’re in charge. Everyone needs a reason for what they do, as long as that reason pushes them to make informed choices.” She took another bite, and ended up with sauce on her chin. She took her napkin to wipe it off. “This is really good. We have to have it again.” She knew it might be awhile, and she didn’t know when, but they would have plans.
Ensign Fayth, Doctor

“We will.” Joseph said, finishing another bite. “As for reasons, sure everyone may have them as motivation, but that alone does not grant those reasons immunity to scrutiny and pressure, which is what I plan to do with this entire class.” A gleam had formed in Rainns eyes as he had talked about his upcoming opportunities to lead and command a significant portion of the ship.

“And there is the ruthless young Lt who saved my life,” Sharah said. He hadn’t had that particular look on his face since they found out she was transfering. She was glad he had something else to focus on. “I would expect nothing less than you push them to their limits. Personally, I wouldn’t want someone who’s not willing to question their own course of action protecting the ship I’m on. Just like I wouldn’t want a doctor to treat me who is unwilling to take a second opinion from someone with a different point of view.”
Ensign Fayth, Doctor

“Ruthless? I like the sound of that,” Rainns mused. He thought back to Fayths sickness and smiled. “ I just had a mystery to solve, and I’m glad it was an important and critical mystery.” He took a sip of water from his glass. “The medical field will always be a mystery that I’m afraid I don’t even have the capacity to solve. If two doctors told me two different things I have no idea who I would believe.”

LT JG Joseph Rainns- COS

“Ah but when you have a mystery to solve you are ruthless, you don’t stop and you don’t let anything else top you either.” Sharah finished her food and sipped her water. “Think about it this way. Two officers, both great tacticians offer you two possible ways to handle a security crisis. I wouldn’t know who to listen to, but you would. It’s the same if you have 2 doctors. What’s the best way to treat the patient? The more possible suggestions the better the doctor can choose the right way.” Sharah shrugged, “At least that’s how I see it working.”
Ensign Fayth, Doctor

Rainns smiled and looked down at his glass of water. He still could not take compliments with any measure of grace. “I’ll take your word for it, since you are the one here with a medical degree.” Joseph said, looking back up at Sharah.

Sharah reached over and took his hand. The inane small talk was killing her. They never did small talk. But she supposed without it she would be crying. She had been trying really hard over the last two weeks to gently disconnect them, it was painful on a purely emotional level. The tension in the room and noise was too much for her. Not really if she was being honest, she just really wanted tonight to be their normal. She slipped right into his mind, into the space he said was just for her. ‘Imzadi.’
Ensign Fayth, Doctor

Joseph closed his eyes, as he felt Fayth enter his mind. ‘I know it won’t be easy.’ He said, ‘but I promise you it will be worth it. As soon as I’m done on Challenger, I’m coming to get you.’

LT JG Joseph Rainns-COS

‘If it was easy it wouldn’t be worth it.’ Sharah squeezed his hand and got up to put her plate away. She smiled, ‘I’ll hear you coming. You’ll know where to find me.’ She sat back down at the table next to him.
Ensign Fayth, Doctor

‘Just take care of yourself Sharah. I won’t be there next time to save you.’ Joseph said with a smirk. ‘No night in shining armor will be there.’
