Cadet Greg Pricer sat quietly, collecting himself and his thoughts, as he prepared to meet his Department Head. He was glad the transporter had a problem, he hated using it and the shuttle ride gave him time to plan out what he would say. Once the shuttle docked he made his way to the office, stopping before going in to check his reflection in a panel to make sure his uniform was perfect. Just then a Lt. came out of the office, looking up at Greg.
“You must be our new Cadet. Don’t worry the Chief doesn’t bite,” the Lt. said, with a disarming smile that helped calm the clearly nervous cadet.
“Good to know,” Greg replied, silently wincing at how awkward it sounded. He smiled back, trying to recover from it as the Lt. walked off chuckling. He took one last deep breath and pressed the button to announce his presence.

Lieutenant Junior Grade Joseph Rainns sat behind his desk, his morning glass of water sitting atop it. His clipboard had a three new sheets of paper with the Name Greg Pricer written at the top of the first page. He had been informed there was a delay due to a transporter malfunction. The notice reminded Rainns of his small fear of transporters, it wasn’t that the young man was afraid enough not to use them, but Rainns would be lying if he said He didn’t think about being materialized inside out whenever he stepped onto a buffer. Regardless, the Cadet would be in shortly and Joseph spent this extra few minutes spinning his globe on his desk and remembering what life was like back home. His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the chime. “Enter.” he called out.

LT JG Joseph Rainns- COS

Greg walked in, taking a moment to observe the room as he snapped to attention.
“Cadet Greg Pricer reporting for duty,” he said as he stared straight ahead with a look that did not betray any emotion. His short life had been spent growing up on Federation ships and stations, giving him plenty of time to interact with, and learn from, various Vulcan officers. They helped him learn how to show nothing on the outside, a trait he found seemed to be common among security officers wherever his parents were posted.

Cadet Greg Pricer- Security

(OOC: I must have missed it but what year is this all set? Post-Voyager or later?)

OOC: I believe it is set at the end of the 24th century

IC: Joseph Rainns observed the Cadet walk in and noticed the lack of any sort of indication of attitude. “At ease cadet, and take a seat,” the young Chief of Security said, motioning to the chair in front of Pricer.

Lt. J.G. Joseph Rainns- COS

Greg walked over sitting down. As he looked ahead he saw the pieces of paper and thought how strange it was to see someone taking notes that way. Even stranger to see an officer without coffee or tea. “Thank you, sir,” he said, as he straightened out ready to get started.

Cadet Greg Pricer-Security

Rainns smiled as he saw Pricer take in the scene, “You’ll find I am a very unique person.” He said with a grin. Clicking his pen he began writing. “Well Cadet, why did you join starfleet?”

Lt. J.G. Joseph Rainns- COS

“With respect sir, you have seen my record. You know my parents were Maquis who were killed by the Dominion after the Federation abandoned them. From there, I lived with relatives who were both Starfleet officers. So I guess I joined Starfleet to help it, and the Federation, avoid the mistakes of its past,” Greg said, looking to see if that elicited any reaction.

Cadet Greg Pricer-Security

Rainns nodded as Pricer talked, jotting a few notes down from his general impression. He noted the Cadet’s confrontational tone and looked back at the Cadet. “It sounds like you harbor some ill will toward the federation, what kind of mistakes do you want to avoid in the future.” He said this with a straight face, giving nothing away. Rainns loved politics and history, and could remember the hearing about the Maquis from when he was very young. As he had grown up and learned more about them he had grown to despise what they had stood for. He had chalked their cause up to blind stubbornness and an inability to respect the governing authorities. What had happened to them was a tragedy, to be sure, but ultimately it had been inevitable, and if those ignorant farmers had just listened to the Federation from the beginning, Rainns felt, they would all still be alive.

Pricer closed his eyes for a half second to center himself. He did have a lot of anger because of what happened but he knew he needed to set the past aside to be successful in Starfleet. Without realizing he was doing it, he moved his hands into a Vulcan meditation position. Once he felt calmer he looked looked at Rainns. “I want to be in security to help and protect people. I saw Starfleet security officers asked to keep tabs on fellow officers who has suspected sympathies to the Maquis cause. I might be just a cadet, and you will always get 100% from me, but I will not hesitate to say something if orders are unethical or outright illegal sir,” Pricer said, trying to walk back some of the anger he had displayed while being clear that he would speak up to prevent some of the abuses he had witnessed growing up.

OOC: Should I be usually last name instead of first name most of the time?

Cadet Greg Pricer- Security

OOC: Up to you, typically I start with last names if the environment is a professional one, but I’ve seen both used a lot.

IC: A puzzled look formed on Rainns’ face, had seen the pose before, but was surprised that the cadet utilized it. ‘Can I just get one normal cadet’ he thought to himself as he looked at Pricer. The Cadet had just opened up a box of worms that the Chief of Security was more than happy to go over. Rainns set down his paper and pen for a moment before leaning back in his seat. “Cadet, what if the reason you are asked to keep tabs on someone is that they are suspected of supporting a terrorist group? Where do you draw the line on what is ethical, and more importantly, what authority do you have to make such a decision?”

Lt. JG. Joseph Rainns- COS

“I would follow the orders unless they broke the law. If was just ethics involved, I would voice my objections for the record but carry out my orders. There is a reason we had to take so many law and ethics classes in the Academy right sir?” Pricer said without a hint of emotion this time. He did internally cringe remembering those very dry classes that someone thought should be offered first thing in the morning. Pricer looked around the room until he found Rainns’ replicator and pointed at it. “May I sir?”, he said.

Cadet Greg Pricer-Security

Rainns picked up his clipboard again and jotted some notes down. When Pricer indicated he wanted to use the replicator Rainns nodded. After he sat back down, Rainns looked up from the clipboard. “Did you enjoy taking those ethics courses?”

Lt. JG. Joseph Rainns- COS

Pricer walked over and replicated a pad. He walked back over, sitting down and holding the pad up. “I did sir. One of the main things we studied was the Federation law. This is where I draw the authority to decide on drawing the line on ethical behavior,” Pricer said, as he read from it citing the sections which detailed the responsibilities of Starfleet personnel. When he finished, he looked up “As you know sir, I can not just claim I was following orders if you give me an illegal or unethical order and I follow it. I will be a good cadet for you by always being on the side of our citizens”

Cadet Greg Pricer- Security

‘Fantastic, a wise guy’ Rainns thought to himself as he saw Pricer replicate a Padd and read off the regulations. “Cadet,” he began after Pricer finished reading. “If I wanted the textbook definition, I would read it myself.” The chief’s eyes narrowed slightly. “I am not in interested in what regulations say are ethical, I want to know what Greg Pricer says is ethical or not.” He picked up his clipboard and clicked his pen. “If that request is too much to ask feel free to let me know.”

Lt. JG Joseph Rainns- COS

Pricer looked away from the Padd and right at the chief. “The line for me is if I am asked to violate the rights of federation citizens. I will politely voice my objections in private; however, when extreme times call for it I will stand up to other Starfleet personnel to stop them from crossing the line,” Pricer said, trying to be firm but polite with the chief while figuring out how they can work together.

Cadet Greg Pricer-Security

Rainns smiled and leaned back in his seat. He was glad that what he had first taken as arrogance was in fact a form of ideological beliefs. “I certainly hope you never have to do that.” Rainns replied, reclined in his seat. “So, what qualities, tangible or intangible, do you bring to the table as a member of starfleet?”

Lt. JG Joseph Rainns- COS

“My tangible qualities include skills such as close quarters combat, marksmanship, and field survival. Intangible ones are my analytical nature, command presence, and emotional balance.” Pricer said, looking at Rainns’s smile and matching it before continuing “That last one mixes the emotional suppression I learned from a Vulcan security officer with the range of emotions humans normally experience. This helps as I can quickly shift emotions to suit a situation or culture regardless of how I actually feel.”

Cadet Greg Pricer-Security

Rainns raised his eyebrows. “You know Cadet, I actually just found out I am about 1/10th Vulcan, and have been looking into that technique, might have to ask for a few tips sometime.” He picked up his clipboard again and wrote something down. “Alright, you said you want to keep starfleet honest, how does that translate to a career goal? how far do you want to climb the chain of command?”

Lt. JG Joseph Rainns- COS

“I want to have my own command. A ship though not a station.” Pricer said, thinking back to the mad house that was DS9 during the war years. “I don’t want to get lost in the bureaucracy back on Earth and go beyond Captain.”

Cadet Greg Pricer-Security

Rainns nodded. “How do you see yourself effecting change and keeping starfleet on the straight and narrow if you don’t want to get involved in bureaucratic leadership?” he asked curiously.

Lt. JG Joseph Rainns- COS

“Relationship building on my way up so if anything is going on I will hear about it. The ship command will allow me to get involved without alerting anyone who might be in on whatever is threatening Starfleet or the Federation.” Pricer said, pausing to gague Rainns’ reaction. “After all, even Starfleet needs someone keeping an eye on it sir.”

Cadet Greg Pricer-Security

(OOC: Is there a way to add a signature so I don’t keep forgetting to drop that into my posts?)

Rainns gave a questionable look to the young Cadet. “If you do not take positions of power how do you intend to keep Starfleet in check without external force?”

OOC: I just copy and paste it at the end of all my posts.

Lt. JG Joseph Rainns- COS

“Using the networks I build as I work my way up to Captain sir. Getting information from the people doing the work at HQ and out in the fleet.” Pricer said, giving Rainns’ a determined look.
